Saturday and maybe more 1 than a few plays when State State comes back home to I 1: i play Middle Tennessee In the midst Barnett of State's gloomy 24 season there still are chances for feel-good moments One would be the sight of the son of a former NCSU All-America Johnny Evans running State's offense not far from where the son took the Broughton Caps to two conference championships Wolfpack coach Chuck Amato isn't thrilled to be asked about playing Evans He doesn't want to contemplate scenarios that lead to the No 3 quarterback taking over "Jay Davis is No 2" Amato said But seeming to concede that the once impossible may no longer be implausible he added "We're going to do everything we can to get Daniel some reps in practice" On Monday as the weather turned cold Davis and most of the team left quickly after practice Stone and Evans stayed throwing passes to receiver Tramain Hall under the guidance of offensive coordinator Marc Trestman Evans a redshirt freshman said he's thinking of getting into a game and he's prepared "That's what my dad always told me 'Stay ready' he said "As a backup you're one play away As a third string you're two plays away That's how I've approached this whole season It's not just recently" But it's just recently that such readiness looked like it might be tested If Stone falters or gets hurt Davis will be next but patience will be short especially if State falls out of bowl eligibility with two more losses Even if Davis is adequate if he replaces Stone pressure will build to turn away from the senior and give a chance to a potential quarterback of the future In part Davis' problems stem from State's failure to use him more during Philip Rivers' senior season "I don't think Chuck and the staff have taken that lesson
