One of the group displayed a press card Identifying him as a reporter for LHumanite, the Communist Party newspaper. (A spokesman for the newspaper later denied that the card was genuine.) The visitors went up to the second floor and rang the bell at Bakhtiar's door. A maid opened it as far as a security mechanism would allow, and then slammed it shut.

The gunmen opened fire and then retreated. Bakhtiar, who is 63, was having breakfast at the time. A radio reporter who got through by telephone while the shooting was still going on was told by the former prime minister that he refused to be intimidated and intended to finish his breakfast. He said the would-be assassins fired 14 shots in the hall in front of his apartment. Later Bakhtiar told the French television that he had been receiving death threats almost every day.

He described the attack as the work of professionals hired by the Iranian government. Press reports have linked Bakhtiar to last week's attempted coup, in the wake of which the Iranian government is reported to have made more than 300 arrests. In addition, Gabriel Robin, senior Foreign Ministry official, drove out to Orly Airport Friday afternoon to meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Sadegh Ghotbzadeh. Ghotbzadeh, who used to live in Paris and comes here once or twice a often on private business, had stopped off on his way to Nicaragua. Agence France-Presse quoted "observers" as reporting that Robin gave the Iranian minister a serious warning about the dangers of using French territory to settle accounts between the supporters and opponents of the Iranian government.

Officials would not confirm this. Ghotbzadeh was said to have told Robin that the Iranian government knew nothing about the attack or the assailants. There was nobody on duty at the Iranian Embassy late Friday afternoon, and a caretaker said, "They were all scared and went home." Friday morning's attack began when the assailants, carrying camera bags, went to the apartment house in Neuilly a prosperous Paris suburb where Bakhtiar if. 1 1 2 If "fit. Man sentenced, then married SANTA ANA (AP) A 31-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison on Friday by an Orange County Superior Court judge and then was married by the same judge in the same courtroom. Cesar O'Campo Acosta, who was convicted of killing a Santa Ana tavern owner, was married by Judge Jerrold Oliver to his longtime sweetheart, Hilda Barajas Segeda. The couple have a ft-year-old child. The judge had planned to formally marry the couple, but Acosta's attorney, Roger Hanson, failed to obtain a marriage license.

In order not to disappoint the tearful bride, Judge Oliver performed a mock ceremony anyway. The Judge said a formal marriage will be performed within a week. But Acosta may be transferred to Chino Prison by that time. Actors strike is authorized HOLLYWOOD (AP) California actors authorized a nationwide strike that could paralyze the television industry as negotiations continued Friday to resolve a contract dispute involving some 90,000 prime-time players, officials of the American Federation of Television and Radio Actors said. The votes by the locals in Los Angeles and San Francisco were unanimous.

The strike deadline is midnight Sunday. Iranian demonstrators cleared BEVERLY HILLS (AP) Charges against 105 Iranians arrested last November during an anti-Shah demonstration were dismissed Friday by a Judge who says they never should have been charged. Beverly Hills Municipal Judge Charles D. Boags said he expects to "take a lot of flack" for his ruling. Methodists elect bishop PALO ALTO (AP) After a record 47 ballots, western United Methodists elected a new bishop Friday, the Rev.

Calvin D. McConnell of Colorado Springs. He was the second new bishop elected this week. The Rev. Melvin Talbert of Nashville, was elected earlier this week to the other vacancy.

McConnell, 51, entered the running on the 18th ballot. The leader through most of the voting, the Rev. Richard W. Cain, withdrew after the 45th ballot. Cain is president of the Claremont School of Theology.

Cuban hijacker prosecution WASHINGTON (AP) The U.S. government is sympathetic to Cubans desperate to leave their nation, but the Justice Department warned Friday that it intends to prosecute those who hijack boats or planes to come to the U.S. There has been a stream of boat-hijackings from Cuba with little or no prosecution against those involved up to now. Agee passport order appealed WASHINGTON (AP) The Justice Department asked the Supreme Court on Friday to overturn a court order restoring a passport to ex-CIA Agent Philip Agee. Elimination of the three courts Is expected to save about $148,000 a year. Although the board could change its mind before final adoption of the necessary ordinance-July 28, Mayfleld quickly recovered from his shock over Friday's action and insisted, "There will be no reconsideration." Mayf ield, who represents part of the mountain area but who expressed mixed feelings about the Crest Forest court, noted the board earlier in the week approved moves to acquire Lake Gregory's San Moritz Lodge and to provide needed recreation facilities there for the mountain communities. "We've been more than fair (with the mountains)," the board chairman contended, adding it is likely the San Bernardino municipal Judges would conduct court at Twin Peaks for the convenience of mountain residents, as they plan to do at Colton. After the vote, McElwain, in an exchange with Hammock, explained his position by saying that "if it's cost-effective for Rancho Cucamonga, it's cost-effective for Crest Forest." He referred to an earlier board action which, although producing no immediate cost savings, wiped out the last remnant of independence of the Rancho Cucamonga Municipal Court in his district by placing it under the wing of the West Valley courts. After Colton City Attorney Stephen Edwards protested the ac-tion, Hansberger said he believes the Colton and Loma Linda city councils, in opposing the mergers, "have not taken a sufficient look at the issue but have spoken from pride." The action is effective Oct. 1, at which time Judges David McKen- na of Colton, Marianne Isaeff of Loma Linda and David Press of Crest Forest will lose their positions. Clerks of the three courts are to be retained, and county Victim (Continued from A-l) The county agreed to settle the claim for the deputies' search because of the unpredictable nature of juries and because a trial would have cost twice as much as the $5,000 settlement, Bruggeman said. St. John was prosecuted in 1977 for reckless possession of explosives in a school, but after a week's trial pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of possession of an explosive device.

He was placed on probation for three years. Before sentencing, the trial judge, Roy E. Chapman, noted that there was no evidence that St. John intended to blow up buildings or injure people. Rather, it showed he intended to drop an explosive in Big Bear Lake to "blow up carp" or "smoke out" a school assembly, Chapman said.

SEYMOUR KRAWITZ said Burton apparently fell 111 Thursday night, possibly because of exhaustion and nausea brought on by heat, bursitis and pain killers he was taking for the condition. Burton plays King Arthur in the revival of the 1960 musical. Krawitz said he was awaiting word from the actor or his doctor to determine the exact cause of Thursday night's episode and could not say whether Burton was receiving any medical treatment. Asked if the actor was intoxicated, as several members of the sell-out audience complained, Krawitz said, "I don't know; I don't think so." Burton has a history of heavy drinking but has said that in recent years he takes only an occasional glass of wine.
