Esther was born in a log cabin near Lintlaw, SK on April 17, 1922.

When she was two, her family moved to Saskatoon. Esther was the second oldest, in a family of seven children. As the oldest daughter, she learned to cook, bake, sew and knit, at a very young age, thus being able to help her mother with the younger children. As with many others at the time, Esther left school after grade 10, and worked to help her family financially. She was famous for the amazing pies that she made while working at St.

Andrew's College. When the war broke out, and when she was old enough, Esther enlisted in the RCAF. She served in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia where she met the love of her life, Argyle Packard, a young airman from Ontario. They married in Saskatoon, on her birthday, in 1945. Together they raised a family of five children, while moving from post to post as an air force family.

When Argyle retired from the RCAF, they settled in Montgomery Place, and lived happily there for many years, before moving to a condo. Some time after Argyle passed away, Esther moved to the Villa Royale. Eventually, there was a need for her to receive home care. We are all grateful for the many loving home care workers who helped her out. When living on her own was no longer an option, and it was time to move into a long term care facility, we were blessed to have our Mom move into the Veteran's Village at Sherbrooke Community Centre.

We are eternally grateful for the loving care that she received there. Esther is survived by daughters, Ellen (Elmer) Exner, Dianne (Ron) Banman, Nancy Robertson; and sons, Richard Packard, and Roy (Barb) Packard. She is also survived by sisters, Olive Mortensen and Joan (Jerry) Ogle; fourteen grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Esther's Life will be held on Wednesday, March 18, 2020 at 2 p.m. at Hillcrest Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sherbrooke Foundation (401 Acadia Saskatoon, SK S7H 2E7) or, to St. George's Anglican Church (624 Ave I Saskatoon, SK S7M 1Y8). Condolences may be left for the family by visiting www.hillcrestmemorial.ca. Arrangements entrusted to Lisa Bos. WASYLYSHYN, Danny Mar.

19, 1943 -Mar. 13,2020 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, Danny Larry Wasylyshyn on March 13, 2020. Danny passed peacefully after a long battle with dementia that slowly took our fun loving, caring, giving and very special man from our lives. Danny was born on March 19, 1943 in Yorkton Saskatchewan to parents Nick and Anne Wasylyshyn. Danny will be lovingly remembered by his wife Rosemary of 54 years, sons David (Susan), Jason (Shawna), and grandchildren Cole, Daniel, Noah, Helena, Joshua and Anna.

He is also survived by brothers Fred (Ruth), Peter, and his Uncle Bill (Mary) Dymianiw along with many cousins, nephews and nieces. Danny also had a very close and loving relationship with his wife's family. Danny was raised on the family farm by Gorlitz, SK until the age of 14 when his family moved to Saskatoon and he attended Bedford Road Collegiate. At the age of 18 he started working for the Royal Bank in the Town of Qu'Appelle, with stints in Areola and North Battleford before returning to Saskatoon to work for the Saskatoon Credit Union. Danny married Rosemary (Yakiwchuk) in 1965, had sons David (1968) and Jason (1973).

He worked for the Credit Union in many capacities for 20 years before working at Murdoch Maber Real Estate for 10 years and in the process making many lifelong friends. Danny returned to the Credit Union for the remainder of his career prior to his retirement in 2000. Danny loved many things in life including playing cards, golfing, hockey, fishing, the Riders, and spending time at the cabin at Emma Lake. He was very giving with his time as he enjoyed volunteering at the Brier, fastball tournaments and in many roles with his children's activities. Danny was very giving and loving to his family and friends, always there to lend a hand and to help out when needed.

Most of all Danny loved his grandchildren, always giving them his love and attention, wrestling with them and letting them do whatever they wanted to be happy. In lieu of flowers memorial donations to the CNIB or the Saskatchewan Alzheimer's Society would be greatly appreciated. A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 AM on 2020-03-19 at Acadia McKague Funeral Centre, 915 Acadia Drive, Saskatoon, SK, Canada. KiiST jfirhz il-j The Plot Against America Debuts Monday, Crave DANIEL D'ADDARIO LOS ANGELES The emotional high point on HBO's new limited series The Plot Against America comes when Herman (Morgan Spector) the father of a family of Jews in an increasingly anti-Semitic 1940s United States, has been pushed past his limit by the bullying of his countrymen, including a fellow restaurant patron trying to intimidate him. The series, like the 2004 Philip Roth novel on which it is based, narrates an alternate history in which president Charles Lindbergh appeases Adolf Hitler and gives rhetorical cover to prejudice stateside.

This unhappy new era of mistrust is cemented by Herman's having been harassed. As if to make an argument for the best of a disappearing America, Herman recalls a sentimental if slightly kitschy tune and stands to croon, ultimately humiliating the bigot who'd harassed him and earning a round of applause from the rest of the restaurant. This incident establishes Herman as a pillar of strength and wisdom with a unique ability to silence cruelty, if only for a moment. It makes for an instructive contrast with the novel on which The Plot Against America is based in which Herman still sings the song, but is met with "no applause" except that of one sympathetic waiter. Roth's novel depicts ordinary people lost in the tide of history, struggling to stay afloat.

HBO's series, co-created by David Simon and Ed Burns, insists, instead, that its characters are indeed history's protagonists. Roth's book uses the device of recollected childhood: All information comes to us from an adult Roth narrating conversations he heard or news developments as he understood them in his (fictionalized) youth in Newark, N.J. But the uncertainty and haze imposed by a child's understanding of a rapidly shifting world isn't plain-spoken enough for Simon and Burns's version of the story. Shifting the focus from young Philip and his brother to their parents (their mother is played by Zoe Kazan) creates space for insistent monologuing from Herman. Their counterparts are Bess's sister Evelyn (Winona Ryder) and her eventual beau Lionel Bengelsdorf (John Turturro), a powerful rabbi who insinuates them both into the cold heart of Lindbergh administration.

Lionel and Evelyn display shameless self-regard in boosting their own fortunes by being, effectively, Lindbergh's Jews-in-chief, allowing gentiles to feel good about their president's embrace of Hitler. That the show's parallels to the present moment in this case, to U.S. President Donald Trump's Jewish daughter and son-in-law, swooning over state dinner invitations as they ignore dog-whistles toward a constituency fuelled by hate are obvious. They do not recommend The Plot Against America, exactly, but can't be held against it either. The show's shift to suit our times comes less in subject matter than in angle of approach: A story first written amid the mindless jingoism of the George W.

Bush era to depict its characters as sadly estranged from agency turns them, in the personality-forward Trump age, into larger-than-life icons of cruelty or of steadfastness. This is a show that, even as it depicts a precarious moment and exists in one, cannot bear uncertainty. That's a tendency that makes it both a fairly unpleasant watch, and a sacrificed opportunity to depict something smaller, more tender, and more ultimately human than the end of the world. In Memoriams Edward Palchinski July 19, 1926 March 16, 2019 The Broken Chain Little did we know that morning God was going to call your name In life we loved you dearly, In death, we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you You didn't go alone, For part of us went with you The day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories.

Your love is still our guide, And though we cannot see you You are always at our side. Our family chain is broken And nothing seems the same, But as God calls us one by one The chain will link again.
