How efficient and clever Mr. Bond would be trying to crack the electronic curtain of U.S. television, however, might be more fascinating from the spectator's point of view. Four of television's top lead ing men with flairs for heroics just tried it in James Bond type roles (disguised by other names). Only oue of them got through. The luckless three were gunned down by Madison Avenue snipers who gave them no time to protest and who obviously left three television producing companies with red ink on their books for the unsold pilot reels. The studio and actor who cracked the electronic curtain are MGM and Robert Vaughn, who will be starting he.xt fall in the title role of "Napoleon Solo," international crime buster, on NBC-TV. (First publication Apr. 11. 1964) Horton as "Mark Dolphin Their three prospective series, all with Bond-type formats, are on the shelf temporarily, if not permanently. Bond popularity in the Ian Fleming paperbacks and on the big screen in "Dr. No" (with "From Russia With Love" due soon and "Goldfinger" now being filmed) sent television into a race to capture an audience with the same kind of cloak, dagger and romantic heroics. Telefilm makers eventuallyj shipped off four shows which made the rouinds of networks, advertising agencies and prospective sponsors. Only "Solo" was sold for the 1964-65 season. "I guess we were just lucky, says Vaughn modestly, in dis cussing why only "Solo" came up with a lime spot (5:30 p.ra Tuesdays, opposite Red Skel ton and McHale's Navy.) But at MGM they credit the concept, not e.xactly imagina tive, of having "Solo" roam the world for his lethal and roman tic fim along with young Vaughn's track record as an old smoothie at the acting game. Filming of the series doesn't start until June, but MGM and NBC publicity men already are at work giving bachelor Vaughn the image of an international crime buster and lady killer. What happened the other day at his home, he reveals, already assures the proper im age for at least a delivery man. The press agents were taking some photos of Vaughn with a pair of sexy babes the morning after a windstorm had knocked down the Vaughn television aerial, left a porch awn ing in shreds and the place in a general shambles. "At one point," Vaughn says, "the photographer and press agents left the living room for a few minutes and the door bell rang. I opened the door to a delivery man, who took one quick look, handed me the package and then fled. "I can't say I blame him. It was only 11 a.m. I was wearing a tusedo and there was a prop machine gun on a table behind me. The two girls were sitting on a nearby couch. One was wearing a pink negligee and the other a black Bikini. must say we presented him with a fascinating picture — the wild life of Robert Vaughn, suspect."
