The shop of "The Village Blacksmith," where Edward L. Eckenrode is still engaged in shoeing horses, remains the scene of many -horse shoe pitching contests. Among the contestants are four elderly men whose combined ages total 300 years as follows: Frank Hildebrand, 78; Augustus Rehmeyer, 76; Jesse Eaton, 74, and George Shaub, 72.

Observers, who like to view the friendly rivalry among the four, say these "old timers" are about as "tough" physically as the shoes they pitch. Two vagrants, names unknown, are being held in the borough lock-up while police are trying to determine which one stole the police car early this afternoon and nearly wrecked it after a short, but very erratic, drive down the Red Lion-Windsor highway. The car was stolen from its parking place, outside the borough garage at the end of East High street, where it had been placed by Chief of Police Paul Royer while he went for dinner.

Continuing down the highway, the man just managed to escape hitting an oncoming car and traveled about one-quarter a mile before coming to grief, when the car cut off the road and across the old trolley track bed before coming to a stop. Borough council, at its January meeting this evening in council chambers, 29 York street, tentatively adopted the 1941 budget which calls for anticipated receipts and tures of $106,885.31 each.

Secretary Richard A. Myers was authorized to prepare copies of the proposed budget and have one available for public inspection in the borough office for 16 days as of Jan. 16. Council approved the payment of $4,000 toward the purchase of a combination ladder truck for Eagle Fire company No. 2.

During 1940, cigar stamps for all classes were sold for cigars, an increase of cigars over 1939 and an increase of 31,850,910 cigars above the sale during 1938.

Sale of tobacco stamps in the past year was for 698,447 pounds. This was en increase of 96,480 pounds over 1939 and an increase of 227,042 pounds over 1938. Mr. Glenn also announced that he is now arranging a schedule of special hours at the ofifce for the convenience of those persons, who desire assistance in filing income tax returns. The schedule will be announced at a later date.
