game Saturday afternoon championship A torrid battle between the largest rubber companies at Daytona Beach Fla for supremacy in the racing tire field ended this week in a resounding victory for the racing division of the Goodyear Tire Rubber Company Eight of the first 10 winners- including first-place finished Junior Johnson of Ronada in the celebrated 500-mile Nascar Race at the Daytona International Speedway ran the route on Goodyear Tires The Goodyear entries echieved the victory under the watchful eyes of Company President Russell De Young and Executive Vice-President Victor Holt jr The win was the most impressive in the eyes of veteran racing observers in view of the fact that the hottest and most talked-about quartet of entries in recent stock car racing -all rumored to be unbeatable were on competitive tires The Goodyear victory marked a clean sweep of the two major stock car races held in recent months Last Labor Day Goodyear-equipped entries also swept eight of the first 10 places including the top winner in the annual Darlington 500 Leading the field of 68 late-model stock cars around the 2ln mile oval speedway in the lead pace car was De Young who circled the tract at 1115 miles an hour In another pace car was Holt and Mickey Thomp-Ison of El Monte Calif who set 1 16 American speed records late last summer in a four-engine car I equipped with special Goodyear Tires Within minutes after the race the Goodyear Blimp Mayflower II overflew the raceway and later downtown Daytona trailing a banner proclaiming Jr Johnson wins Daytona 500 on Goodyear Tires are urged to make an appointment with the Red Cross to assure the success of this vital community service Anyone between the ages of 18 and 59 who is in good health is an eligible and welcome blood donor The voluntary donation of blood enables the Red Cross to make this life giving fluid available to residents of the Twin State area their friends and families when it becomes necessary to perform blood transfusions There is no cost to the person for blood through this program although there may be a hospital charge for processing the blood One of the most dramatic medical advancements of recent years is the technique known as open heart surgery This type of surgery is now being performed in Vermont and New Hampshire at Mary Fletcher Hospital in Burlington and at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in Hanover Without the generous donation of blood by willing residents this advanced operation is not possible as fifteen to twenty pints of blood are required in just one of these operations There is no known substitute for the life sustaining qualities of human blood The blood in need must come from responsible and interested citizens who are willing and able to donate their blood in order that less fortunate people may benefit A gift of a pint of your blood is a very personal one which is literally from the heart Won't you take the time and effort to make a gift of a pint of your blood to a less fortunate neighbor? continual service in our schools is deeply Frank Crimmins Candidate For School Board The following statement has been received from Frank Crimmins candidate for a one year term on the Windsor School Board "I have served on the Windsor School Board for the last two years They have been difficult years in which the Board has been confronted with many serious problems I have learned a lot and I feel the experience I have gained will be helpful to the Board and the people of Windsor if I am reelected "The most important problem facing the Windsor School system is the increasing costs of operation I as a property owner as well as a school director promise to continue to exert every effort to be sure that any money spent will be spent so that full value is received At the same time it is my hope that we can continue to improve the educational standards of our school system as I am convinced they have been improved in the past two years No one person can perform miracles I will only do the best I can "For vital statistics I am married to the former Rita Lessard a graduate of Windsor High School in 1947 We have four children: Steve 5 Patricia 3'a Linda 2'2 and Lori 1 We live at 102 Ascutney street I graduated from Akron South High School in 1937 University of Vermont in 1941 I belong to the Knights of Columbus serving as financial secretary and the Elks Club Active in Windsor will meet Thursday February 25 at 7:30 in the Municipal Courtroom of the Municipal Building Members of the school board selectmen and the Municipal Manager have been invited to attend All interested parties are invited as well Questions expected to arise at the Town Meeting March 1 will be discussed How Some Officials (Not School) Feel It has recently come to the attention of Windsor Town Officials through the media of the newspapers that we are or may have been negligent or derelict in the performance of our official duties The allegation was apparently made that several unneeded or otherwise impracticable pieces of equipment have been purchased by the Town lately that are not considered by one party at least as being in the best interest of the Town of Windsor It does seem to us unfortunate for all Windsor taxpayers that any citizen or taxpayer here in Windsor who has the wealth of information or latent knowledge that will enable us to lower the tax rate either now or in the past has seen fit to keep it to himself these many years and not pass it on to those of us that have been and are attempting to give Windsor the best possible governmental services at the lowest possible cost to the taxpayer Most assuredly the Town Officials have always given consideration to any request made by any taxpayers past or present that has been in the best interests of the Town of Windsor It would now appear perhaps that this information has been withheld in the past and is now to be used as a springboard to secure a position of public trust Certainly if anyone has anything to say that will be of benefit to the Town it should first be said to the Town Officials then if you receive no satisfaction voice it in the newspapers the radio or from every street corner in Town Wm Lowery For Lower Tax Rate William Lowery candidate for Windsor Selectman stated today that he does not believe that the increase in Windsor Town taxes is necessary or justified Candidate Lowery a Windsor resident for several years and in business here for several years who will oppose Glenn Bates for Windsor Town Selectman at the annual Town meeting Tuesday March 1 issued the following statement today: "I have been of the opinion that a lower tax rate was possible this year with a concerted effort of a sound appraisal of the town expenditures and since my announcement of my candidacy I have been contacted and have talked with several taxpayers who are of the same opinion It is obvious that the town officials in compiling the budget have known for several months that the Grand List from which the revenue is based would be lower and I understand why they base their expenditures accordingly thus resulting in a fairer and realistic tax rate For an example 'Why then the several thousands of dollars that were spent for a new grader or the trade in and purchase of new trucks used to keep the tax rate down or possibly lower our I sincerely believe that through a more cooperative effort the cost and maintenance of at least three town vehicles could be completely eliminated Regarding the interstate super highway I question whether every effort is being extended to insure and encourage an interchange and exit in Windsor This is a life-line insurance for survival The location is vitally important to every Windsor taxpayer and the basis for our future tax rate I am deeply concerned with the future of Windsor if we allow the Town to be by-passed It must not happen and we should have our planned attack ready now to present to the authorities both to the State and Federal These are but a few of the important items that could result in a fairer tax rate for the people of Windsor Jaycees Sponsor Ski Meet Thursday evening February 18 the Jaycees held their that face our parents and teachers and which arise daily within our school system I promise if elected to devote any and all necessary time to the equitable solving of these problems as I become aware of them As a parent of school age children I feel strongly about the need for better education which is ever present with us especia'ly in recent years Our children who must some day themselves face the need for community service must be adequately prepared both for this and for the successful establishment of their chosen careers I also feel that economy where possible is imperative so long as
