300 Accidents Last Year State Police To Stress Highway Patrol In 1963 Samuel Emilo described by his attorney as a mJHU businessman in his late Wednesday was judged not guilty of usury in connection with an alleged transaction with a Walth'am couple on Sept 9 1961 A jury of seven women and five men deliberated two hours and 15 minutes before returning the verdict Last Thursday another Addison County jury judged Atty Wayre Bosworth guilty of usury on a similar charge Both men were accused of aiding and assisting the other in allegedly loaning Earl and Marguerite Farnsworth $35-35127 and contracting for $1000 for five months and $1000 for another two months in excess of the legal six percent interest rate Bosworth is now awaiting sentence from Chief Superior Judge Harold Sylvester who presided at both' trials Maximum penalty on a first convic-tipn is a $100 fine Bosworth is cited on two other usury counts Emilo on one After a first offense the statutes call for a $1000 fine or one year in jail or both on conviction Throughout the three-dav trial defense counsel Hanford Davis of Brandon maintained Emilo made no loan to the Farnsworths who sought $35000 to prevent foreclosure assembly Thursday morning the youngest exgovernor said he always knew he would step down as governor and did not mind being his elder statesman just the early age that bothers He is 35 He added that he will be "forever indebted as there is no greater pleasure in life than being of to the state and its peoples Hoff delivered his inaugural address on Thursday afternoon before a packed chamber Monday night from 7:30 to 9:30 for nine weeks excluding February 18th with the exception of welding The total cost for each course will be eight dollars plus supplies if needed The cost for welding will be six dollars plus supplies Courses are open ot the public and registration will be held at Middlebury Union High School on Monday and Tuesday nights Jan 21 and 22 from 7 to 8 The following courses will be offered: 1 Women's Physical Education this is a physical fitness program which includes general conditioning exercises for specif i-c parts of the body tips for eating and living special exercises for special problems and other physical activities along game lines 2 Fundamentals of Drafting beginning drafting course Rev Weaver Is Honored At Ferrisburg Man Seeks New rial On Fraud Attempt A motion for a new trial filed by a former Ferrisburg man found guilty Dec 19 of attempt to defraud an insurance company of $75 for alleged loss of a refrigerator in a house fire was heard Thursday morning in Addison County Court Chief Superior Judge Harold Sylvester heard the motion filed by Donald Earl Gardner through his attorney Joseph of Rutland The defense alleges the remains of a refrigerator were recovered in the ruins of the Allen Clark house in whic Gardner and his wife lived on eh 11 1962 The prosecution in the trial contended there never was a refrigerator in the house Gardner farmer and beautician now living in Colchester is awaiting which will include the use of drafting instruments theory of shape description sketching lettering and orthographic projection 3 Beginning Typewriting a course to teach the individual the process of typing from the very elementary steps to the mastery of the typewriter for functional use 4 Rug Braiding selecting (Continued on Page 8-A) Greater emphasis on highway patrol coupled with a stepped-up program of motor vehicle violation enforcement the two-fold 1963 goal of State Police aimed at making Addi-son county highways safer this year The objectives were announced by Cpl Lee Jones commander of the Middlebury substation in his year-end' report of State Police statistics for 1962 Jones said greater stress will be placed on patrolling back roads during the year in an effort to cut down on traffic accidents Last year troopers investigated 300 accidents as compared to 276 in 1961 Ten died on county roads highest death toll in eight years Nine died on the highways in 1961 Traffic accidents increased rapidly the 1 liter part of the year particularly in August and September Jones said much of the hike was due to a large influx of traffic during those months particularly on the weekends Surprisingly the July Girl Scout Round-Up at Button Bay resulted in a small amount of accidents much less com-(Continued on Page 8-A) Ski School Time Changed More Teachers Needed ID-4 Board Okays Teacher Summer Program Middlebury ID-4 School directors Monday night voted to support the Harvard-Lexington sum mer program whereby teachers spend several weeks advancing themselves professionally learning the latest techniques in teaching and exchanging ideas with other teachers Extent of the directors' support will be to provide $500 tuition to each of two teachers selected to attend the program i Miss Mary Hogan principal and Miss Katherine A McGlynn attended the sessions last summer Miss Hogan said some of the ideas and methods learned last summer are being used in the Middlebury school Teachers participating in the program their perspective of the process and learn of methods through which teachers can assist puijils in the learning process according to Ralph Eaton supt of schools Recommendations listed in the report of the recent evaluation included exhaust fans for the College St building's basement and air deflectors for the windows and the enclosing of the fire escape to make possible use of another room It was suggested correct size tables and chairs be added to the library in the Court St building additional guidance help additional time by the part-time librarian a part time physical education instructor and more clerical help Estimated costs of these improvements and additions was estimated at $2500 More guidance help will be available with no added cost under next year's plan for the library it was pointed out If new furniture is purchased for the Court St building current tables and chairs would be a-vailable for library facilities on College St Farewell Event VERGENNES Nearly 100 friends of Rev and Mrs Peter Weaver wished them well on their departure from this community at a farewell reception held in their honor Sunday evening Lay Leader Leroy Peasley presented them with a gift of money on behalf of the Vergen-nes and West Addison Methodist parishes as well as many friends from Ferrisburg and surrounding areas The Vengennes Methodist Adult Fellowship prepared the refreshments consisting of tea sandwiches cookies coffee and tea The table organization Downhill Relay Race Sunday For Pleiad Memb rs The Pleiad Ski Club will hold a new type of race a downhill relay Sunday afternoon Jan 20 at the Middlebury College Snow Bowl Participants will be divided into four or five teams distinguished by arm bands according to Dr Andrews chairman of the event Starting at the top of the lift all members of the first relay will be started simultaneously up the Votr Trail A flag will be passed to the next member of each team as the race continues down the Voter ending on the White Slope The best climbers will be placed on the uphill part of the trail skiers on the steep patches and skiers on the gentler slopes Team captains will determine the placement of racers All members should report to the patio of the new Starr Lodge at 1:30 pm to select captains and teams for the race which will begin at 2:00 pm Monday evening the Middle-burv RecreaU'n Council met at the Municipal Building with Wil liam Beck a director of the Reereatjpn Council Ski School and a number of his instructors The time of the ski school hours have been changed to Saturday from 10:30 to 12 noon Parents are asked to come for their children at 12 rahter than at 12:30 Because the size of the ski school is larger than exoected more instructors are needed especially to volunteer to serve as substitutes when a regular instructor is not able to be on hand that Saturday The Council would like a few more regular instructors so that grouos seeking instruction may lb smaller and thus be given more attention This Friday at 12:30 Mr Beck will meet with the instructors and any who would be willing to serve as instructors or substitutes at the Snow Bowl Tf you cannot make this date Mr Beck stated that he would meet with anvone for this training puprmse between 12:30 and 1:30 at the Snow Bowl except weekends All children participating in the school are asked to go directly to the instructor which they had last Saturday and if that is not Middlebury honor was paid to the memory of Harry Whitney who for years was chief engineer for the District The voters at the meeting unanimously passed the following resolution: our community of East Middlebury has suffered a great loss with the passing of Harry Whitney In his capacity as chief engineer he served the Fire District for many years Harry was a true neighbor for his willingness to
