Edncatkm Today The word is passed that a idlool meeting , is about to begin. The 30 or so pupils and instructors quickly assemble in i large classroom—still eating iheir lunches, f This is the way Maybeck operates. There are no bells to signal change of classes. There is no special lunchroom with vending maditoies and itiv^r* ware. In fact, there are,few things about Maybeck lhat resemble most public and private schools. Maybeck, six rooms located over a Catholte Church tnnex, was started by its four full-time instructors tfter they were dismissed from St. Elizabeth's Catholic High School in Oak- ForWearOn 6-ie,AAA'EtU OPEN! Maybeck director Stan Cardihet said, "If Socrates could teach on the steps of the Parthenon, Jesus in the streets of Jerusalem, then we could begin on the University of California lawn." Despite its unique origins, Maybeck's basic curriculum includes the regular high school subjects — English, math e m a t i c s, science, history, philosophy and the' arts. However, it d i f f e r s from other schools in its approach. Fess Parker Being Sued For $50,000 SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) Actor Fess Parker has been sued for $50,000 by a truck driver who said he was bitten by Parker's dogs while making a bread delivery to his Santa Barbara home. Marvin L. Martin, 47, said Wednesday in his Superior Court action that he was bitten March 29 by two German shepherd dogs while he was trying to find the delivery entrance at the home. Martin said he suffered leg injuries which required 13 stitches. Most coui^sesat MaybMiit areia taught "enviMtimenfally." Bttg< lish teacher and public nt**! tlons director Paul August considers the environmental apiMToach an integral part of school life. "We^ think we can get kids to learn just about anything through the environment," he said, explaining that his con^ cept of the environment In* eludes more than the outdoors and nature, but any situation where life experiences take place. As an example August explained that the students learn about law and justice by actually observing proceeding in county courtrooms and discussing cases with Deputy District Attorney Jack Rodisch, who is a volunteer teacher at Maybeck. And one of his English students interested' in broadcast journalism has helped prepare news releases and. will soon make her debut on a local television talk show where she will discuss Maybeck. No Real Bosses Although the full -time teachers double as administrators, there appear to be no real bosses at Maybeck. As an example, one of the items on the school meeting agenda was vote on whether they Would attend a documentary film on Vietnam. With students and teaebers having equal vote, only five wanted to go. However, instead of the majwi- ty rutbtg, everyone agreed that titoae who were interested should attMd the movie. Champion Smoker LON&ON (UPI) - Bob Foulds, a 28 - year - old civil servant, retained his title Wednesday as Britain's chanv- pion pipe smoker. Foulds smoked a pipe of rough cut tobacco for 121 minutes and 16 seconds and won a $2,480 prize. COUPON WEEK END COUPON SPECIALS COUPONS GOOD FRI. & SAT. ONLY! COUPON At Maybeck a basic rule of tiiumb seems to be that no one is forced into anytbing. Science teacher Tim Kelly admits the free atmosphere is not for all students. "A kid has to be emotionally mature enough to be here," he said. Maybeck students pay tuition based on parents' income. For the most part they appear to come from white middlOKslasi backgrounds, although there are four blacks, five Chicanes, and one Indian. Cardinet said future plans lor the school include some eipfe- skm, although "we want to keep classes smaU though l« be able to continue to relate subjects to each other and ,to deal with students individually."
