After slamming into the wall, Werth quickly recovered and threw the ball while on his back toward the infield to start a double play. GETTY IMAGES LOS ANGELES 3, COLORADO 2 A I A NEW YORK New York City health officials are ques- tioning doctors for the New York Yankees about an intes- tinal parasite that may have sickened three players and at least one family member. Yankees slugger Jason Gi- ambi has said he is being test- ed for the parasite after being plagued by symptoms for the past couple of months and being out of the lineup for almost a week. wife, Kristian, and Yankees pitcher Kevin Brown also have been diag- nosed with the parasitic ill- ness, according to Giambi. A third player, right fielder Gary Sheffield, was stricken in June with intestinal symp- toms that were attributed to at the time, and Giambi originally blamed Sheffield for his ill- ness.

Sheffield was so ill that his wife drove him to the ball- park for one game, but he was unable to play. New York City Depart- ment of Health Mental Hy- giene officials said their con- tact with the physi- cian is not an investigation. They said they had been in touch with the team doctor earlier and are attempting to follow up with him and other doctors who are involved. this point it is a private matter as opposed to a pub- lic health depart- ment spokesman Sid Dinsay said Thursday. The team had no com- ment on the health questions.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Giambi would stay at home while the team awaited test results. Giambi was out of the starting lineup for the sixth straight game when the Yan- kees opened an 11-game homestand Thursday against Baltimore. Earlier in the day, Cashman said he ex- pected Giambi to be at the ballpark. Later, however, he said he got a call from the all- star first baseman saying feel well and thought he should stay at Giambi start eight straight games around the time of his diagnosis June 29 and repeatedly has said he has been feeling weak. The suspected parasite, En- tamoeba histolytica, usually is seen in people from poor countries, not rich ballplay- ers.

a single-celled bug called a protozoan. It causes an illness called amebiasis (am-mee-BI-uh-sis). Typical symptoms are bloody diarrhea and low ab- dominal pain, starting two days to up to a month after infection. People usually catch it from traveling in a country where it is common, eating or drinking tainted food or water, or having close con- tact with someone who is in- fected. rarely fatal when properly treated with a two- drug combination for about weeks, but it can cause a lot of misery.

51,677. Baseball I DENVER Jayson Werth slow down as he slammed into the wall and caught Jeromy Burni- drive. Still on his back, Werth threw the ball toward the infield to start a double play. With the way Los bull- pen has been pitching, one spec- tacular play was all the Dodgers needed. Werth homered and made the key defensive play to get the game to best bullpen, helping the Dodgers beat the Colorado Rockies 3-2 Thursday.

my home run, Jayson Werth saved the said Dodg- ers catcher David Ross, who hit his third homer in the sixth inning. a lot that can happen when these guys start hitting and got to give credit to Jayson for that catch. That was one of the best catches ever With Wilson Alvarez and Colo- Jamey Wright matching each other almost pitch for pitch early on, it seemed likely the game would come down to one key play. Werth provided it in the sixth. With the score tied 2-2, Burnitz hit what the crowd at first thought was his seventh homer in as many home games.

But Werth, who hit his seventh homer in the first, never gave up on the ball. He crashed into the wall just as he caught the ball in left-center, then rolled over and threw the ball in from his back. Shortstop Cesar Izturis relayed to second baseman Alex Cora, who tossed it to first to easily dou- ble up Preston Wilson at first. the difference in the Dodgers manager Jim Tracy said. know, made a lot of terrific defensive plays this year collectively, but that catch today ranks right up there as one of the better defen- sive plays made all And it set the stage for Los Ange- bullpen.

Colorado get a hit after Alvarez left in the fifth inning, managing just one baserunner after catch in the sixth. Duaner Sanchez, Darren Dreifort and Guillermo Mota followed Al- varez, and Eric Gagne got four outs to finish off the four-hitter and notch his 30th save in 31 chances. Dodgers shift focus While still battling San Diego for Arizona center fielder Steve Finley, the Dodgers intensified their efforts to engineer a three- or four-team trade to bolster their rotation, National League execu- tives said. General manager Paul DePodes- ta continued trade talks with the Diamondbacks about Finley, who has said he would exercise his right to block potential trades ex- cept to the Dodgers or San Diego. Meanwhile, DePodesta turned to the Florida Marlins, among oth- ers, in his attempt to bring anoth- er starter to Los Angeles.

He has had talks with Florida about right- handed starters Carl Pavano and Brad Penny. Because of payroll concerns, Florida is willing to move one of them for a productive catcher and another starter. The Marlins have made many at- tempts to acquire Paul Lo Duca, but the Dodgers would rather help them get a catcher and pitch- er from other teams. am working pretty hard at it, but hard to say if said DePodesta, not commenting specifically on a potential deal in- volving the Marlins. stellar day lifts Dodgers Health officials question Yankees D2 FRIDAY, JULY 30, 2004 THE FRESNO BEE WWW.FRESNOBEE.COM.
