to persuade parents to take a firmer stance ensuring that their children get enough sleep It's pretty clear that most elementary-school age children need at least nine hours of sleep nightly to function optimally Hunt said However several small studies suggest that many children sleep between seven and eight hours most nights SEE SLEEPYHEADS PAGE 3E KANSAS am ma ousehold goes something like hallowed spots go 's not ground zero But the ield I visited last week in an empty corner of Southern Wake County is first cousin to it Ten years ago late on a freezing Friday night a helicopter crashed in that spot It y--- Its to had i traveling been gn from I Wilmington to li cz Durham and was carrying four people: a iii 'l j'l pilot and three employRD Geanno ees of televi sion station WM All of them except sports reporter Tony Debo died Debo who was sitting next to the pilot was thrown through the helicopter's windshield still strapped to his seat The impact knocked him out When he regained consciousness helped by the pungent smell of leaking aircraft fuel which had a smelling-salt effect Debo discovered that his friends were dead He was wet with fuel his ankle was fractured his right arm was gashed and his face was bleeding He had no idea where he was There was-a lone light shining in the distance a half-mile away so he limped toward it It was a house Its occupant a young woman at home alor was terrified by the sight ot a bleeding man pounding on her door She wouldn't let him in Instead and with Debo's shouted encouragement to do so she called the Sheriff's Department "I guess I looker pretty scary" Debo acknowleages today Deputies arrived A rescue crew soon followea Paramedics worked on Debo while others searched for the crash site When they found it they confirmed what Debo already knew He alone had survived The paramedics asked him if he wanted to be transported by helicopter to Duke Medical Center He said no He recalls that he attached some bad language to his refusal Debo was out of the hospital within a couple of days He visited the site on the first anniversary but had never returned again until last week 10 years to the day after the crash Actually no one is certain which day the crash occurred The crew was returning from a high school football game which had been played on the evening of Dec 6 1991 But Debo recalls that it was close to straight-up midnight when a light on the helicopter's instrument panel started flashing and a warning horn sounded The crash happened just a minute or two later Debo who has all the votes on this matter has declared that it was after midnight when they hit the ground So Dec 7 last Friday was the day Debo and I spent pushing through the brambles and brush that have grown up in that still-remote field He carried roses After searching for a while he selected a spot to place them The site wasn't chosen at random but neither was it the exact spot of the crash Nature and time have teamed up to hide the precise location forever Debo had a rose for each friend Ten years ago they were four bachelors all of them engaged all of them returning to their girlfriends that night Today there is only Debt) Only he got to marry his girlfriend and father two sons He's 42 years old now but he possesses an old man's wisdom "Sports is always measured by the bottom line" the sports reporter said as he stood on his hallowed ground "Did you win or did you lose?
