DUNJEE City Editor FREEDOM FOR AIL FOREVER MEMBER NATIONAL NEGRO PRESS ASSOCIATION his plans and 0 them He but he has not been back We do not know where he came from nor where he went to He may be putting his plan before the people in this town, in some section of the city, and his plan and purpose may be a worthy ome BUT CAN the Negro business men of this town permit this sort of unin- dorsed, and possibly questionable proposition to go before the people of our race, with out investigation and allow the race to be exploited by some one who may meaif well and then may not be the right character and person to promote such a project THERE NEVBR WAS A TIME in the history of the Negro in Oklahoma City, when the race was in a better spirit to enter into a co-operative scheme to put over some of the larger projects that can only be put over thru cooperation The war taught us so many lessons in group effect, the masses have just about caught the vision that we need All that is required is leadership The Negro business men of Oklahoma City ought to be organized so that the people of this city may have protection from any attempt to exploit them improperly, some men may have a good idea and no means or brains to put his idea across, another may have the brains to put something across and an evil intention, he may be just trying to get some unsuspecting persons money Under no conditions should any project be permitted to pass muster and be placed before the people unless first it has borne inspection from those who have the interest of the city and the race at heart One man, with the wrong motive, can ruin all of the splendid spirit that has developed here, the danger lies in our letting some robber get into our midst and set us back into the valley of suspicion and distrust lor the next ten years jj Phone Maple 1116 Private Pete' THE TRANSFER MAN We haul your express and baggage with care and promptness Aato Truck Stand CahlorniA anfi Santa Fe Streets Oklahoma City Oklahoma HAIR COLLEGE HALLELUJAH, 'TIS DONE BAPTISTS OF OKLAHOMA TRIUMPH EDITORIALS HANG YOUR CLOTHES ON A HICKORY STICK BUT DON'T GO NEAR THE WATER Governor Brough of Arkansas is quoted as saying that the Negroes of other states, are holding Arkansas up as a model state in race adjustment matters and in the next breath, states that, I have been reported as in favor of the repeal of the Jim Crow law, I HAVE NO SYMPATHY FOR THE REPEAL OF THIS STATUTE Governor Brough has quite recently appointed a commission, constituted trol of this educational property and school, from both races to study race relations in Arkansas, the immediate cause for the creation of this commission, being the Elaine riots, near Helena, in outlining the work and purpose of the commission, Governor Brough stated to a delegation of Oklahoma Negroes recently Its purpose shall be to improve race relations, PREVENT LYNCHINGS, TO INSURE FOR WHITES AND NEGROES, EQUAL JUSTICE BEFORE THE COURTS, TO IMPROVE ECONOMIC, INDUSTRIAL, EDUCATIONAL, SANITARY AND LIVING CONDITIONS, AS WELL AS RECREATIONAL FACILITIES FOR NEGROES AND TO SECURE FOR THEM PROPER TRAVELING ACCOMODATIONS ON TRAINS AND STREET CARS FROM THE MOVE that some of our chief executives take, we wonder sometimes, whether they, in their profession of leading down the road of race adjustment, have really lifted them selves up out of the quagmire of selfishness, for this is what it takes to settle a difference between the other fellow and you there is a whole lot of difference between, the just regard and deference that you give to the other man's ideas and feelings and the attempt that you make and seek for A NEW PLAN TO MAKE HIM CARRY THE SAME LOAD THE SPIRIT to which we refer, can be aptly seen in this quotation from the remarks of a white member of a race commission, in which the writer sat, this white man knew that he had been called by the governor to discuss a plan of race adjustment, he agreed that it ought to be done but when he got up to talk he made this statement WE WANT THE NEGRO TO UNDERSTAND AND KNOW THAT THE ONLY KIND OF JUSTICE THAT HE WILL GET IS THE KIND OF JUSTICE THAT THE WHITE MAN WANTS TO GIVE HIM NOW THIS WHITE MAN did not care a tinker's dam what the Negroes thought about matters of state HE SAID SO What was the need of the Negroes' presence there, if not to give expression to his point of view, and to seek a remedy that would remove the FUNDAMENTAL CAUSES, AND THIS BRINGS US TO GOVERNOR BROUGH HE SAYS THAT HE WANTS TO IMPROVE RACE RELATIONS, AND YET SAYS IN THE SAME BREATH I HAVE NO SYMPATHY FOR THE REPEAL OF THE JIM CROW LAW WHEN WILL THJ3 WHITE man cease to consider the black man as a pawn and a plaything, what need to call Dr Morris and Bishop Conner, and other black men of prominence in the state of Arkansas into conference and then deliver an ultimatum to them as to what they can adjust and as to what they can not seek to remove The attitude of Governor Brough is identical with that of the mother who says, Son you may go up town, but do not stop in the pool hall Now there are a fot of pool halls in which the Negro wants to stop, in the adjustment of race relations, he wants to stop in the POOL HALLS OF HYPOCRISY AND PREJUDICE AND DO BUSINESS THERE The white man who talks of race adjustment, can make it up in his mind that what the Negro is talking about has to do with ERADICATION, NOT REGULATION, there are some things that we do not care to have regulated at all WE WANT THEM DONE AWAY WITH, AND JIMCROWISM IS ONE OP THEM NOW THE REASON that the Negro has, for wanting to correct this fault in American institutions, is because it lowers his status in a visible way, and it has a baneful influence, greater than any other effort of prejudce, it offers open insult to our wives and children daily, and is the source of more of the petty bickerings that nag and burn thru to the soul, than any thing else WHEN THE WHITE man comes to us talking about improving race relations, these are the things of which we think, you may talk about the mob and the shackling of the mob, but the way to stop the mob is to STOP THE WAY THAT THE LYNCHER THINKS We black men know that so long as the members of mobs ride street cars and trains, where there are visible evidences of state making of us SOCIAL OUTCASTS AND PARIAHS, SO LONG AS THE LITTLE WHITE BOY AND GIRL IS TAUGHT AS HE ENTERS PUBLIC CONVEYANCES, THAT THERE IS A HALF HUMAN BEING OUT SIDE THE BAR, SO LONG AS THE JUDGE IN THE COURT MUST DECIDE CASES AGAINST BLACK FOLK, AND ASSUME TO ADMINISTER JUSTICE BASED UPON THE INFAMY OF JIMCROWISM, JUST SO LONK WILL THERE BE MEN WHO WILL FEEL THAT IF WE HAVE NO RIGHT TO OUR RIGHTS, WE HAVE NO RIGHTS TO OUR LIFE A REARRANGEMENT of the kind of justice that the white man has been according the Negro in some sections of this nation, will not form a basis of permanent adjustment We want to tear down and destroy the spirit that LOWERS OUR CITICENSHIP STATUS, AND THE GOVERNOR WHO THINKS THAT HE CAN CREATE BETTER RACE RELATIONS BY SIMPLY REORGANIZING AND RESHAPING THE CONDITIONS THAT NOW OBTAIN, IS LACKING IN VISION AND STATESMANSHIP, HE MAY MAINTAIN, THRU FORCE, THE VISIBLE EVIDENCES OF THE THINGS HE HAS BEEN SCHOOLED TO CONSIDER AS JUST AND RIGHT, BUT HE CAN NOT AND WILL NOT BE SATISFIED UNTIL THE BALLOT IS HIS UNTRAMMELED, UNTIL SEGREGATION IS A DEAD ISSUE, UNTIL JIM CROWISM IS BLOTTED OUT AND THE HAND OF THE MOB IS SHACKLED WE WELCOME the forming of commissions for the purpose of race adjustment, but we do not welcome the admonition to Negroes which in effect is similar to this HANG YOUR CLOTHES ON A HICKORY STICK BUT DON'T GO NEAR THE WATER THE FIGHT FOR A FAIR TRIAL The action of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, in taking hold of the Collin Tilley case, and fighting for a fair trial of this seemingly unfortunate black man is in line with what the local branch ought to do It is not a question of whether or not Mr Tillry is guilty, it is a question of whether or not be gets a FAIR TRIAL, a great many people thing that Mr Tillery is not guilty of this crime and every one, who has followed the case, knows that the evidence upon which he is now held would not hold a single white man in this county, everything that the state attempted to prove at the preliminary trial fell down, including the testimony of the poor black woman who has been held in jail since the murder for no other reason than the fact that SHE IS BLACK Tlfe Association should also look into the reason for the holding of this helpless colored woman, at the preliminary, she charged that she was being Constantly mistreated and brow-beaten in jail, we have called the attention of the Association to this important matter but to date nothing has been done To the Baptist Brotherhood of the State of Oklahoma Dear Brethren Behold This conies to bring you goo news and glad tidings which shall be to all of the Baptists of the state For the Executive Board of the Missionary Baptist State Convention mot with the Trustee Board oi the State Baptist College a corporation in the second Baptist cliurch of Muskogee, Dr Stewart, pastor, and there consummated the deal for the state Baptist college located five miles of Muskogee on a fifty- acre tract of rich land with several two-story buildings thereon, with school running in full blast, at a cost of about eight thousand dollars Twelve hundred dollars was paid down on the purchase price, and the Missionary Baptist state convention, through its Executive Board was given a warranty deed with abstract to this property from the Trustees Baptist Stae College The same is so recorded on he record books in the court house of Muskogee county This gives the Baptist state convention absolute ownership and control of this educational property and school It must be remembered that some two thousand and three hundred dollars of the remaining indebtedness belong to individual shareholders It is our hope and prayer that these individuals donate these shares to the Baptist state convention, as they were taken out with no view of reimbursement We are also confluent that every individual who holds a share against this school is desirous of seeing a greater Baptist college operated on this campus, hence we feel sure that they will gladly give the convention the advantage of these shars that it may go on and operate a greater Baptist school At any rate, we take this liberty to ask that of them The training school for women and girls located at Sapulpa, with Mrs Houston at its head, and the Oklahoma Baptist College, located at Muskogee, with Dr Buttram at the helm, both are getting along excellently under existing circumstances The greatest need of both of these schools is more money The wiucational Board with Dr A Robinson as chairman, has absolute charge of the management of these schools It is our aim to build up the largest and most enthusiastic schools in the southwest at our college located near Muskogee Three Thousand Dollar Campaign Launched At our state Board meeting in Muskogee a few weeks ago, they endorsed a three thousand dollar drive for the first three winter months, culminating the last of March, 1920 We think this is a very small amount to ask for Missions and Education while all of the Christian denominations including our own, are asking tor millions But this little drive is just the beginning of what we shall do The Oklahoma Baptinst Trumpet was taken ovevr as our state organ through which to speak, with Revs Bryant, of Tulsa, as managing'editor, and Twine, of Muskogee, as editor With these two splendid writers and newspaper men at the head of our state paper we are sure the blessed tidings will fly We hope that every loyal Baptist in the state will both subscribe for and read the Trumpet Every pastor should sell from one to one hundred copies of the Trumpet each week and send the money in to the editors of theTrumpet that the paper may continue to live The following districts are asked for the following amounts in the next I ninety days for Missions and Christian months Of course the larger churches will be expected to give mor than ten dollars However, we leave this apportionment to th different modrators of the several districts Each district through its moderator will be put on its merits and whatever is given will be published through our state organ We must not only have religion in our business, but business in our religion as well Our God is a God of system It is either now duck or no dinner Shoot Luke or give up the gun Each moderator in the state is hereby asked to hold his quarterly boanftfc meeting the latter part of March, 1920, in order to be able to report to our state board by the first of April If for any reason a moderator or moderators do not call his or their churches in this campaign, any loyal church may with pride do what it can along this line and report same to Rev, A Clark, Cor Sec 1015 Grant, Guthrie, Okla before the time of our state board meeting in April A Missionary and Educational box or barrel at every service on the side, will bring the results without interference with the regular offering There is but one thing needed, and that is a co-operativ spirit on the part of the pastors for after all, they are veritable kings in their respective fields Now, brother pastors and moderators, we appeal to you in the name of all that is just and true, and for the sake of the Baptist denomination let us
