More deaths, page 7B. Joseph Curtis Sloane, 89, art historian emeritus BY JULIA CORBIN STAFF WRITER CHAPEL HILL. Jaroslav Folda first met Dr. Joseph Curtis Sloane in 1968, when Folda interviewed for a professorship at the University of North Carolina. Like any other young man before a job interview, Folda expected the chairman of UNC's department of art to quiz him about the qualities he could bring to the department.

Instead, Sloane spent his time selling Folda on his dream for the department. "He had a very ambitious agenda, and he had this fervor of wanting me to join the department and be part of this new venture that he was trying to organize," Folda said. Sloane, 89, professor emeritus of art history at UNC-CH, died Friday at Carol Wood Retirement Community. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m Wednesday at Carol Wood. Colleagues recalled the former chairman of the art department and the founding director of the Ackland Art Museum as an art historian with a passion for promoting the arts.

"He built the department," said professor emeritus John W. Dixon Jr. When Sloane came to UNC in 1959, he set out on two equally ambitious tasks: to create a top-notch art department and to build the Ackland's collection. the first goal, he Sloane will be memorialized Wednesday. To accomplish was as selective as possible in his hiring, Dixon said.

"He was very careful to get the best people for positions that opened up," he said. For the second, Sloane enlisted the help of UNC's faculty as well as art dealers across the country. What set Sloane apart, Dixon said, was not that he did things differently his tactics were not unusual. It was just that he worked so hard to fulfill his vision for the department. His pursuits were not limited to the university.

He actively pushed to raise the profile of the arts across North Carolina, often without much recognition within his own department, Folda said. "So we were working away in our department while he was making all these good things happen to improve the environment not only for our undergraduates, but also our graduate students and our faculty and we hardly even knew about it," Folda said. Sloane retired in 1978, after nearly 20 years as chairman and director. He was born in Pottstown, and raised in Pasadena, Calif. He received his bachelor's and master's in fine arts and doctoral degrees from Princeton University.

Before coming to UNC, he taught at Princeton and Rutgers universities and at Bryn Mawr College, where he was the chairman of the arts department from 1939 to 1951. Sloane achieved the rank of lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific during World War II. He married Marjorie Merrill, now deceased, in 1934. The couple had two daughters: Janet, now of Dorchester, and Peggy, now of New York City.

The Joseph Curtis Sloane Library at the Hanes Art Center at UNC, a collection of 79,000 volumes of books, exhibition catalogs, serials, CD-ROMs, videocassettes and microforms on the art of all periods from prehistoric times to the present, is named in his honor. He received The North Carolina Award in 1977. UNC honored him with the Jefferson Award and an Alumni Distinguished Professorship of Art. He served as chairman of the board of the North Carolina Museum of Art. In 1994, Sloane also received an honorary doctor of letters degree from UNC, reflecting his continued interest in art history.

"Joe was an extraordinary scholar," Folda said. "He sacrificed so much of his career to doing all these wonderful things to make the university stronger in terms of the arts." Julia Corbin can be reached at 836-2882 or.
