Celey retired in 1975 as supervisor of Giant Foods Warehouse in Landover MD and with his wife Gwendolyn moved to Port Orange FL Mr Celey attended Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church and was a member of the Senior Center both in Port Orange A funeral mass is scheduled for 10 am Wednesday at the Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel Glenwood Ave location Burial will follow in Raleigh Memorial Park Surviving are his wife of 60 years Gwendolyn Celey sons Floyd Celey Jr of Old Lyme CT Richard Celey of Port Orange FL Larry Celey of Deerfield WI sisters Bessie Douglas of California and Muriel Luck of equally ambitious tasks: to create Sloane will be a top-notch art memorialized department and Wednesday to build the Ackland's collection To accomplish the first goal he was as selective as possible in his hiring Dixon said "He was very careful to get the best people for positions that opened up" he said For the second Sloane enlisted the help of LINIC's faculty as well as art dealers across the country What set Sloane apart Dixon said was not that he did things differently his tactics were not unusual It was just that he worked so hard to fulfill his vision for the department His pursuits even knew about it" Fo Ida said Sloane retired in 1978 after nearly 20 years as chairman and director He was born in Pottstown Pa and raised in Pasadena Calif He received his bachelor's and master's in fine arts and doctoral degrees from Princeton University Before coming to UNC he taught at Princeton and Rutgers universities and at Bryn Mawr College where he was the chairman of the arts department from 1939 to 1951 Sloane achieved the rank of lieutenant commander in the US Navy serving in the Pacific during World War He married Marjorie Merrill now deceased in 1934 The couple had a job interview Folda expected the chairman of UNC's department of art to quiz him about the qualities he could bring to the department Instead Sloane spent his time selling Folda on his dream for the department "He had a very ambitious agenda and he had this fervor of wanting me to join the department and be part of this new venture that he was trying to organize" Folda said Sloane 89 professor emeritus of art history at UNC-CH died Friday at Carol Wood Retirement Community A memorial service will be held at 3 pm Wednesday at Carol Wood Colleagues recalled the former chairman of the art
