THE NEWS TUESDAY OCTOBER 7 1997 TiE NEWS St OMER COJAYGE TUESDAY OCTOBER 7 1997 OOTBALL 7c COJAYGE FOCffBALL 7c ACC STATISTICS ftimmom No home cooking for 'No les this time th4 I game of the season at Northwestern Spencer Romine took over guided the Blue Devils to consecutive wins against Army and Navy and was playing his best going into Saturday's Maryland game Then he suffered a dislocated hip and will miss the FSU game Before that senior David Green sustained a knee injury in preseason and has played briefly in one game "I've never experienced anything like it" said offensive coordinator Larry Becldsh who is in his 32nd season as a football coach "I've always had a four-year starter at quarterback" Beckish said Duke doesn't significantly alter its attack based on the quarterbacks' different styles but constant changes at that pivotal position makes it difficult to establish continuity ANOTHER JOLT: He didn't have a fancy nickname like "Nate the Great" or "Krill the Thrill" but freshman linebacker Nate Krill was making a big impact on Duke's defense before suffering torn ligaments in his foot Saturday night at Maryland Now he is scheduled to wear a cast for six weeks and might be out for the season "That's a big blow" Goldsmith said "He was playing very very well He's playing way beyond his years He's probably the most mature freshman I've ever coached He never made the same mistake twice" HIT MAN: Linebacker Ryan Stallmeyer who cracked the starting lineup in the second game of the season had 17 tackles with four for losses including one sack at Maryland HEADY STUFF: Duke will host its annual Education Day an event that's open to area youngsters before Saturday night's game Blue Devils basketball player Trajan Langdon soccer player Samantha Baggett and former quarterback Anthony Dilweg will speak to the youth on staying in school and saying no to drugs Al Corr can be reached at 829-8948 or aicarrnandocom DURHAM playing Florida State anywhere is a colossal challenge but Duke coach Fred Goldsmith is glad this year's game with the Seminoles is at Durham's Wallace Wade Stadium for a change The Blue Devils have faced FSU on the road three straight seasons at Tallahassee in 1994 and '96 and in Orlando in '95 when Duke gave up IDUKE its home game for a NOTEBOOK $1 million payoff 1 "-1 Goldsmith oppos- f) es selling a home i 1 date L4 pi "That sends the wrong message" said Goldsmith II whose Devils will LAIR face the Seminoles IIIMEEMINIMMEME at 7 pm Saturday "Since I've been here I've tried to build fan support Then you play a top-ranked team and tell your fans you're not going to see this one It also sends the wrong message to the players and the people you are recruiting "You're saying you are up for sale I understand when schools have to do it to survive But Duke does not have to be a road program to survive fmancially It's nice to play 'em here in Durham North Carolina" FAST FACT: Florida State is ranked No 4 nationally The last time Duke beat a team rated that high was in 1960 when the Blue Devils' 8-3 Cotton Bowl champs defeated No 4 Navy 19-10 ATTITUDE: Corey Thomas one of Duke's all-time leading receivers explained his approach to Saturday's game this way: "I'm going out to beat 'em not just to play 'ern I'm not out there to watch 'em If I was going to watch 'em I'd go sit in the stands" QB INJURIES: Every time 41t I CIAA HONORS: Larry Little NCCUs head coach has been selected the CIAA coach of the week the Eagles' second conference win Centrars Adrian Jones is the CIAA special teams player of the week for the second time this season He returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown and had a kickoff return for 24 yards open up things of the team's top four pass-catchers are juniors or older "We've got to recruit a lot of receivers this year we're losing a big group of our receiving corps" Brown said "We have to prepare for next year this year and try to stay ahead of the game" What's more Brown is using the four-receiver set more than ever because defenses have made it a priority to limit the running game Beyond the four regulars at receiver no other wideout has caught a pass Jason Peace the No 4 receiver sprained his right knee at TCU but it expected to play Still depth at receiver is a scary affair "If one of those guys gets hurt we're not deep enough at this point to progress without losing some effectiveness" Brown said Enter Godwin a multi-talented player who was voted the state male high school athlete of the year in 1996-97 He was the Yankees top draft selection and became the first No 1 pick in franchise history who declined to sign a contract with the club Brown said the fact that Godwin could be draft-eligible in three years means UNC should use him on the football field while it can Wherever it can too Godwin might be needed to return kicks since Linton and redshirt freshman Antwon Black who are among a group of players who handle kick returns are questionable for Saturday Had Brown known that Godwin was going to remain in the football fold he turned down the Yankees' final offer after football practice started in August he might have made an impact already "If we has known Tyrell was going to be here we probably would have started him out in some kick returns earlier" Brown said UNC can use the extra options Williams and Black each has fumbled at least one kick return resulting in three easy scores by the opposition While Anderson and Godwin still hope to see action this fall tailback Rufus Brown another member of the high-profile freshman class likely will red-shirt Brown said Then again in light of the nine names listed on the injury report entering practice today that too might change "I think right now Rufus is comfortable with the idea of red-shirting" Brown said "The problem is depth It changes so much every day We might Heels' injuries BY STEVE ELLING STAFF WRITER CHAPEL HILL Tailback Tyre II Godwin spent the first month of football season doing his best imitation of tailbacks from Stanford Indiana and Maryland That's the typical role of freshmen playing on the North Carolina scout team serving as practice cannon fodder for the first-unit defense It appears Godwin again may try his hand against the firstteamers the ones from the other sideline Godwin a freshman from Council who turned down a $19 million offer from the New York Yankees in order to attend UNC has been practicing returning kicks playing in the secondary and at receiver and could hit the field as soon as this weekend against Wake Forest (noon WRAL WITN) "He might ultimately play corner he might play wide receiver he might play running back" Coach Mack Brown said "He's so fast "You know you'd like to have him on the field He looks good at everything very honectly" Godwin a Morehead Scholar from East Bladen High made the trip and suited up for last weekend's 31-10 victory at Texas Christian but didn't play Thing is he still wants to see action even if it means burning a year of eligibility for a half-season of part-time participation Moreover Godwin isn't the only freshman from the most ballyhooed running-back haul in Brown's 10-year tenure who could sniff the field this week for the No 5 Tar Heels Another freshman who has yet to receive any time Rayon Anderson is in the mix at tailback Running back Jonathan Linton a senior starter who left the field with a shoulder injury against TCU is one of three players listed as questionable for this weekend which has sent Brown scurrying for reserves Domonique Williams a freshman tailback who has carried nine times for 31 yards may be elevated from third to second team depending on Linton's availability All of the freshmen will play behind Mike Geter a senior and the team's No 2 tailback Geter has never started in five years at UNC though he is averaging a team-high 43 yards a carry this fall A spate of injuries or perhaps merely the threat of them has prompted Godwin to be evaluated at a series of positions Brown said With UNC thin at receiver Godwin's speed could someday be a huge asset Three cvaluctuuta CIL Cl OL to Fuolutuzlo Brown said With UNC thin at receiver Godwin's speed could someday be a huge asset Three ROMINE OUT: Quarterback Spencer Romine who suffered a hip dislocation in last week's 16-10 loss to Maryland will miss Saturday night's home game against Florida State Romine who began the season on the third team got a chance to start in Duke's third game of the season and guided the Blue Devils to both of their victories Army and Navy He has completed 26 of 49 passes for 531 yards Bobby Campbell who started the first two games before getting hurt will man the No 1 position for Duke against the Seminoles David Green and Kevin Thompson will be in the backup roles for the Blue Devils ORT CAROLJNA ratl' LOTS OF INJURIES: The No 5 Tar Heels enter practice today with a slew of questions The most important is how many players will be wearing red jerseys At UNC red signifies those with medical problems Quarterback Oscar Davenport (knee) is listed as probable and could be cleared to play this weekend against Wake Forest but tailback Jonathan Linton (shoulder) is questionable Three starting offensive linemen Mike Gimbol (ankle) Mike Hobgood (ankle) and Mike Baxter (back spasms) have been cleared Reserve lineman John Surigao (knee) is probable "We need Mike back" Coach Mack Brown said "We need all of the Mikes" I LOCATION to buy or sell a home in Raleigh choosing Wes Minton is a terrific move For a full-time broker who will give
