EEK & MEEK by Howie Schneider BRIkRD iNKWSI'AI'KIt KNTKItl'IIISK ASSN.) QUESTION: What in u ttriani:' ANSWER: The Briarcl is a sheep, cattle and guard dog descended from a very old race of French dogs. The breed is mentioned in records as far back as the 12th century. These dogs were often called the sheep dogs of Brie, a French Province. The Briarcl is muscular and squarish in build. It has bushy eyebrows and a well-feathered tail. The coat of moderate length is hard and wavy, sometimes described as a "goat's coat." The ears are cropped to make them appear semi-erect. The Briard is usually black, gray or brown. The male stands from 23 to 27 inches high at the shoulder. This dog has a great record as a working dog. For years it worked on the farms as a guard of the property and a herder of animals. It also pulled carts and has a splendid record as a police dog and as a war dog. Many of them died in service in World War II. The Briard makes an excellent family dog. It is alert, courteous and friendly. It seldom barks unless it is necessary to give a warning. It is gay and affectionate and very playful. 6-22 (Carmen Tenune oJ'Maniaroneck, N.Y.. wins a prize for this question.
