CHD grants given to area agencies Throughout the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Bernardino this Sunday is Campaign for Human Development Sunday. That means that each parish in the diocese will take up a special offering to support the work of the national anti poverty agency. Last year the diocese raised more than $41,000 for the campaign. Ten percent of that money was used for projects in the area and 75 percent went to fund other CHD projects throughout the nation. In 1981-82 CHD gave $6.6 million to 195 anti-poverty projects.

One grant for $50,000 went to the Casa Blanca project in Riverside, a program designed to help high school drop-outs and provide mental health services. In October CHD announced it was giving a second grant of $40,000 to Casa Blanca and an additional grant of $40,000 to the Riverside-San Bernardino Domestic Workers Center based in Riverside. Eve. Service 8:00 P.M. Directed by Fahari Jeffers. the Domestic Workers Center is'an offspring of a similar center in San Diego, a center which also received help from a CHD grant. The aim of the center is to organize domestic workers so that they receive fair wages, decent working condit ions, sick leave, vacation pay, and job security.

Most of the workers are employed as maids, homemakers, orderlies and hotel and nursing home workers. In order to qualify for a CHD grant, a group or organization must show that its program is attacking the roots of poverty. For example, a CHD grant would not be given to a rescue mission providing food and lodging for the homeless. Instead it would be given to a project designed to help the homeless help themselves. "It's very important because it fills the gap, the gap being the ultimate program to help the poor back out of the cycle of poverty," said Monsignor Michael Nolan, diocesan CHD director.

Local CHD grants (last year a little more than $10,000) are given be a committee of people from the diocese. Last year they supported such projects as the Migrant Workers Project in Temecula, the Red Mountain Prospectors Corp. (a senior citizens project) in Trona and a local portion of the Casa Blanca Project. pastor of St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church in Rialto.

Bible exhibit at Loma Linda A special collection of historic Bibles will be exhibited through November in the library of Loma Linda University, La Sierra Campus, in conjunction with the nationwide observance of National Bible Week. The show, composed of manuscripts and monographs drawn from the library's main collection, traces the history of the Bible in modern European languages, with emphasis on the development of English-language versions of the scriptures, according to Anne Spradlin, library assistant in charge of reserve books and designer of the show. Scattered throughout the library are five display-cases full of original and facsimile editions of such historic Bibles as the Gutenberg Bible, Tyndale's original English New Testament, a 1755 edition of Martin Luther's famous German translation, and the best-selling book in the history of printing, the King James Version of 1611. On the issue of abortion, however, the Southern Baptist position is clear. "1 think abortion is a spiritual matter. 1 think that is a moral issue that Southern Baptists would have to oppose," Draper said.

"I really think that we'll see a modification of the Supreme Court ruling (the 1972 Roe vs. Wade decision ruling abortion legal up to the sixth month of pregnancy! before very long." Known for being concerned with "saving souls" or working to see people become Christians, Southern Baptists have been slow to get involved in social issues, such as hunger and poverty. But, Draper said, that is rapidly changing. "Conservative Christians are more involved in social issues now than they've ever been," he said. "I think all of us realize now that we have to be involved We've got to somehow be a part of the solution." Of course, Southern Baptists are convinced that solution is found in the Bible.

However, Draper said, there is a "greater sensitivity to applying the Bible We can't talk about how much we believe the Bible unless we see something." So, for example, the Southern Baptist Convention has increased its hunger relief funding from a little mure than $10,000 four years ago to more than $2 million in 1982. On the political scene, Draper said that while many Southern Baptists support the Rev. Jerry Falwell's Moral Majority, that group and others like it have no formal support from the denomination. While it's important for Christians to bring the Bible to bear on social problems, Draper said his main concern is that the church does not give up on what he sees as its No. 1 task spreading the Christian message of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.

"I personally feel that while we must be involved with the political process we must not become preoccupied with that," Draper said. "I realize my main job is to preach and to win people to Christ."
