short-handed goals and the Millbrook defense survived a Greensboro Page shooting barrage to take a 2-1 victory in the state 4-A boys soccer championship game on a wonderful and warm November day The Wildcats' first boys soccer title was a perfect preliminary to the holiday season The annual Raleigh Christmas parade was a few blocks away from NC State's Method Road and Millbrook coach Danny Wilkins will have a few extra blessings to appreciate on Thanksgiving But the game was as much a celebration of high school competition as anything State championships are supposed to be a showcase of skills and desire and the best games have some unusual twists This game had it all including an underdog team finding a way to overcome all the odds Page dominated the ball firing 21 shots at Wildcats sophomore keeper Casey Prince and a defensive crew that handled the mounting pressure coolly "A lot of it was mental toughness" Wilkins said "For us to have a chonce we had to win the game this way" "This way" seemingly meant hanging by their fingertips the entire game Millbrook took only four shots and Page could have played 90 percent of the time without a keeper The Pirates controlled the middle of the field and it seemed the Corey Roberts-led Wildcats defense would no sooner stop one threat before Page was regrouping for another attack "But I always said I'd rather be a scoring team than a shooting team" Wilkins said with a grin Neither team scored in the first half but Page dominated the attack and got a one-man advantage when Millbrook's Jason Faulcom got tangled up in a collision and was banished from the game with a red BY BILL WOOD WARD STAFF WRITER ii "They are at another level" NC State coach Mike O'Cain said "They have the best talent in the country You hope they might stumble and somebody would sneak up on them "They have so many weapons offensively and their team speed is unbelievable Defensively it's just hard to do anything consistently against them" The Pack did do some things against the 'No les making FSU punt the first two times it had the ball and taking a 3-0 second-period TDs to take charge "MC State turned the ball over too many times" Florida State coach Bobby Bowden said "There is no telling what might have happened if they hadn't turned it over They had momentum They took the first two drives to us and it seemed like every time they made a big play and every time they threatened they turned the ball over" And the Seminoles a wide-open team turned power masher rammed it down the Pack's throat Tailbacks Warrick Dunn rushed for 122 yards and Rock Preston 81 yards respectively as the Seminoles ground out 259 yards on the ground Danny Kanell passed for a pair of touchdowns but it was the ground game that doomed the Pack RALEIGH They're still in a league of their own Florida State's I 741 eighth-ranked Semi- orik noles starting slowly and dodging a few big-play bullets from NC State in the second quart used an overpowering rushing attack to dominate the final 45 minutes and hand the 25th-ranked Wolfpack a 34-3 defeat at Carter-Finley Stadium on Saturday night The Seminoles (94 overall 8-0 in the ACC) ran their string of ACC victories to 24 clinching their third straight league title and wrapping up a major bowl bid The Wolfpack gunning for an upset and a shot at a tie for the league title dropped to 7-3 and 5-2 with a league game at Virginia this Friday 1 first-quarter lead But turnovers and missed opportunities in the second quarter and Florida State's strength and speed turned the tide The Wolfpack got a 55-yard kickoff return from Alvis Whitted in the second period and a 53-yard run from tailback Tremayne Stephens (121 yards rushing) but two fumbles proved costly in the period as the
