Sugar Bowl Fans to Need Tranquilizers By HAL BROWN Brownsville, Tex. When Nebraska goes against Alabama in the Sugar Bowl game at New Orleans Jan 2, itTl be the fourth appearance in the Sugar Bowl for Crimson Tide coach Bear Bryant and he has yet to come out on the short end. But if appearances in the Sugar Bowl and Husker coach Bob previous bowl appearances at Nebraska are an indication, fans had better find room for a bottle of tranquilizers in their suitcases before leaving for New Orleans. Devaney wUl be making his first Sugar Bowl appearance, but in two Orange Bowi showings, a Cotton Bowl appearance and a Gotham Bowl effort, the margin has been more than one touchdown only once, in last 39-28 Orange Bowl loss to Alabama. three Sugar Bowl encounters have all been close, a 13-7 win for his Kentucky team over Oklahoma in 1961, a 10-3 triumph for Alabama over Arkansas in 1962, and a 12-7 battle over Mississippi in 1964.

In two of those wins, squads had to stop late drives inside their own 10-yard line to preserve the wins. most recent Sugar Bowl appearance, the 12-7 win over Mississippi was gained when Tim Davis kicked four field goals for all of the Crimson points. kicks were from 31, 46, 42 and 48 yards out. He barely missed on a 50-yarder. Alabama was helped by 11 Mississippi fumbles, recovering six of them and intercepting three passes, but the Crimson Tide still had to hang on in the closing moments for the win.

Mississippi had a first down on the Alabama nine late in the contest, but two running plays got them only to the five. Then Ole Miss quarterback Perry Lee Dunn hit on a pass to Allen Brown, but officials ruled Brown caught the ball beyond the end zone. final gunning effort on last down by Dunn was stopped by Jimmy Dill at the two-yard line. down there on the goal line is where we won the old ball Bryant said with a sigh while bragging about his youngsters. seems to me it was right about there we stopped 13-year memory is remarkable.

In that 1951 game against National Champion Oklahoma, Kentucky team stopped a Sooner drive after OU had gained a first down at the Kentucky four- yard line. That was the Oklahoma team that won a 49-35 season-ending victory over in a personal rushing duel between Bobby Reynolds and Billy Vessels. Vessels passed 17 yards to Merrill Green for the only Oklahoma score against Kentucky in the 1951 Sugar Bowl as the National Champion Sooners match the efforts of quarterback Babe Parilli, who this year was voted comeback player of the year as quarterback of the Boston Patriots in the American Football League. 22-yard pass to Wilburt Jamerson after Kentucky recovered a fumble by Oklahoma quarterback Claude was good for the first Kentucky touchdown. Parilli also led the drive that resulted in the winning touchdown, hitting long passes to Jamerson and Bruno to set up one-yard plunge for the touchdowm.

Bryant retails his win over in the 1962 Sugar Bowl game as one his scariest moments. I almost had nine heart Bryant said after the game. The Alabama mentor admitted that he was nearly ready to give an intentional safety to preserve the victory at 10-5 rather than gambling. was leading late in the game and Arkansas had the Crimson Tide backed near its own goal. But Alabama quarterback Pat Trammel manged to run out the clock in three downs.

Brvant explained that had he been forced to punt, he likely would have given the intentional safety, thus setting up a free kick from the 20 rather than gambling on a punt from the end zone. That team was very similar to thii group that will face Nebraska. They had been unscored on in their final five regular season games just as has the 1966 team and they came into the game with a 10-0 mark, going out with 11-0. The two Sunflower teams have divided the last six Christmas-time meets, last finale winding up 7161 with Kanssas over Nebraska.

However, it was the best finish ever in the tourney and their game with the Wildcats is one of the two best opening attractions on this card, along with Kansas-Colorado. That 10-point loss by the Cornhuskers in the 1965 championship was the biggest in six years in the finals, as the 1960-64 crowns were decided by three points in overtime, two points, two points in four overtimes, three points and two points again. After a one-point loss to Minnesota in its opener, K-State has reeled off five straight victories. Dennis Berkhoitz, a 6-1 guard, is the leading Cat scorer through games of Tuesday, December 20, with a 14.8 average.
