ProoUlmtnff tuo of Duveuport, A subject that ought to enlist tho atten- tioo of citizens to A greater degree than It is tho establishment of manufacturing Industries In Davenport rtnd the Inducement of foreign capital to Invest hero. While mushroom growth Is not deairablo neither Is slow, sluggish growth. The happy medium should be attained If possible. There is no more substantial basis for permanent and long continued growth than manufactories, which help to build up a city by swell- Ing the population and bringing in foreign capital.

Situated topograplcally ex. collontly with every facility for transportation by rail or river and commanding a largo territory there Is no reason why at least half a dozen enterprises might bo Inaugurated hero during tho year If tho advantages and Inducements of tho city arc properly sot forth and mode known to tho outside public. There tire now half a dozen manufacturing enterprises seeking a suitable location, among them tho Olive Chilled Plow works ami tho Hall Safe and Lock company, but wo believe no effort has boon made to Induce- anyone of them to locate In Davenport or has tho matter been oven discussed. If all should lend a helping hand in promoting tho progress of tho city It would not be long before the Inlluunco would begin to bo felt and tho advantages of additional Industries would speedily manifest themselves. Manufacturing establishments If unsolicited are not going to locato in Day- eaport when so many cities are pressing tholr claims, presenting tholr Inducements and otherwise exerting themselves.

There should bo bomo one or somo association who, whenever an opportunity presented itself, would at onco furnish Information concerning transportation facilities, fuel, sites and available lands, Tlio effort would not bo barren of results, It would bo safe to wager. If wo stand idly by und lapse Into comparative lethargy that life and mil ness activity which wo have a reason to expect will not como. It behooves citizens generally to ntlr. themselves up, take advantage of any opportunities that present themselves and novor bo oblivious of tho fact that tho ac- qulsltlon of any enterprise Is not only benefit to tho public In general, but that each Individual will share that Increasod prosperity and business whtcii may como with It. SYhen tho now railway bridge Is constructed there is reason for believing that In tho matter of freight rates Davenport can compete successfully with any city In Iowa.

Our future growth In a largo measure depends upon tho establishment of manufactories and tho fuKii- tlon of several enterprises hero that would erect largo buildings and occupy hundreds of operatives would give a decided Impetus to commercial transactions. Wo have an abundance of water, excellent protection from tiro and possess other advantages which go a groat way with men about to establish factories. If we don't blow our own horn no one will do It for us and tho sooner tho necessity of concerted action and more activity upon tho part of the business community Is appreciated tho quicker will there bo an awakening In tho commercial life of Davenport. KXA3UXJK AND JJIJV There Is groat competition nowadays among the publlsliers of cyclopedias and there Is tireless energy manifested In presenting their respective merits to tho public.
