Jayhawks To Test NU Next Continued from Page 1C is small (178) and has had trouble holding onto the ball. "But today he made a big difference in the ball game. He held onto the ball well. Never fumbled. Took one wide pitchout and even caught a pass.

When pressed by writers on a promotion for Miller, however, Mitchell remained non- commital. lot depends. We want to check the movies and on our injury situation next week in Miller, a product of Omaha North high school, has been running on the second team, but got his break when regular Mike Johnson came up with a leg injury. The KU offense treated the 36.900 fans with an awesome offensive attack. It clicked for 326 yards and 21 first downs.

And Kansas turned what observers thought would be a close game into a one-sided affair real early. Abernethy got the first touchdown on a one-yard sweep after Jerry Barnett had recovered his second K-State fumble in the first period. Then Dave Bouda, another Omahan added his first of four extra point placements. The second Kansas TD drive covered 66 yards early in the second period with Abernethy scoring from 15 yards out. This is about the point where the roof fell in on the Wildcats.

Moments later Bill Wohlford, a 191-pound middle guard, intercepted an errant aerial from i Castillo and rambled 25 yards to paydirt. Then it was turn to enter the scoring column. On the first play after the Kansas kickoff, linebacker Greg Roth recovered a fumble which gave the Jayhawks possession of the pigskin at the KSU 25 yard line. Miller plunged in from the one after a ten-yard run by him kept the short drive alive. Kansas defense began to hold slightly better after intermission, but so did the KU defense that continued to play fine football.

The last score of the contest came in the third period when Fenton scored on an eight-yard run that started out to be a pass play. Fenton rolled back on a third and one situation looking for a receiver, but instead found nothing but clear sailing into the end zone. However, Fenton hobbled the ball going in and still another Omahan, starting offensive end Sandy Buda, was there to save the day. The KU defense was so effective that Kansas State traveled into Jayhawk territory only four times in the game and twice was immediately pushed back into its own land. Kansas State was able to gain pnly 50 yards of net rushing in 37 attempts.

However the passing picked up 114 yards. The Wildcats also lost three fumbles and had five passes intercepted. And so Kansas coach Mitchell will be hoping for a third consecutive near-perfect game from his charges Saturday when they invade Nebraska. The native of Broken Bow, was a very interested listener as they discussed the trials and tribulations of pro football at a post-game bull session.
