Larry Boots Buskers Home, 16-14 Nebraska 14 0 Then Rallies Past Missouri By CURT MOSHER Columbia, Mo. Color guts. what Nebraska needed here Saturday. what the Cornhusk- ers had. Stuffed in a cavern by win- crazed Missouri, which struck for two sledge hammer touchdowns in the first quarter, the Cornhuskers came back to erect a monumental 16-14 victory and preserve their unbeaten season at 7-0.

This one was something extra. And the record Homecoming throng of 58,000 which jammed into Memorial Stadium on this bright and breezy afternoon was not clamoring for its money back. They would have been too limp to collect it. From the time Missouri stunned them in the i minutes until Larry Wachholtz shot his winning field goal effort through the posts with 5:56 to play and right up until the gun when Marv Mueller picked off a desperation pass near the goal, it was a Hitchcock production. Nebraska, which had come back in the second quarter on two short touchdown bursts by Pete Tatman, got a little help from Missouri when some Tiger used poor vocabularly selection and cost his team a 15- yard penalty to help from Wachholtz within range for his field goal.

Nebraska had driven from its 40-yard line to a i down at the Missouri 32. Immediately after Charlie Winters legged it for the first down, a Missouri player said something and an official moved the ball on down to the Tiger 17. Quarterback Fred Duda, who had come up with big plays all day, ran for four to the 13 and Winters matched that to the nine. It still over. Missouri moved to the Nebraska 39 where Kaye Carstens came up with a great play to halt the Tigers there. Then MU got the ball again when Nebraska had to punt. Missouri started on its 20, but the Huskers, playing a prevent defense, kept ceivers covered well and Mueller came up with his second pass interception of the day as the gun sounded. The defense was terrific from the time Missouri scored its second touchdown until the game was over.

The Tigers got only 61 yards in the second half. And the Nebraska offense, which had been checked by the aroused Missourians and hampered by a pass terception in the first quarter, began to roll in the second. The Huskers struck on two straight possessions, the second one the result of longest scoring drive of the season, an 89-yard chopper which took 14 plays. Nebraska got into the scoring column the firs time on a 57-yard march on four plays following a Missouri punt. Dudaos Dandy Dash Precedes Touchdown Fred 38-yard fourth-down run.

Duda pitched 15 yards to Freeman White along the right side and a first down at the Tiger 38. Then Wilson unloaded first bomb of the day. He took a straight ahead handoff, cut back his left in the secondary, graciously accepted a cutting block by Frank Solich, and streaked to the Tiger one. On the next play Tatman crashed in and it was 14-7 with 9:.32 to play after Wachholtz converted. Following the kickoff Missouri made only one first down as Mike Kennedy and Walt Barnes came up with big plays and the Tigers had to give the ball back to the Huskers, who now had the momentum.

The Huskers took it under difficult circumstances as a clip nullified a Wachholtz return to the 43 and left the ball on the Nebraska 11. This where the Huskers wfre at their best, the ground game becoming a well-oiled machine. Duda passed only times, connecting once to Wilson for seven yards. So, with Solich and Duda doing most of the work, the Huskers moved the ball to the .39 they faced a fourth and one uation to keep It alive. They needed their second bomb of the day.

They got it. Duda made a great fake to Solich into the line, then slipped out around the left end and fled down the sideline to the Missouri 1. On the second play, Tatman went over. Wachholtz missed his kick and it was 14-13 with 1:35 left in half. And while that ended the scoring save for the field goal it certainly the end of the offense.
