Cornhusker Football Million Dollar Octobwr 17, 1965 Lincoln Sunday Jonmal and Star a By HAL BROWN An expanded football stadium, filled nearly every week with football-hungry fans, provided Nebraska with its largest athletic department profit since advent of grant-in-aids. The Husker athletic balance sheet moved into the black to the merry tune of 586,499.78 for the fiscal period ending June 30, 1965 This was a whopping jump over the profit of $3,929.08 for the preceding fiscal year. profit can be attributed to the increased seating in the NU athletic director Tippy Dye observed in releasing the financial statement. The figures bear him out. Ticket sales for the past fiscal year dumped $902,411.53 into the money pot m- pared to $646,998.97 the previous year.

Another key factor was that narrowed the gap between guarantees paid out for football games and guarantees received. The Huskers paid out $352,322.49 in guarantees to other teams while taking in $327,734.36 the past fiscal year for a loss in that category of only The deficit in the preceding year was $54,085.53 with $205,819.62 coming in and $259,905.15 going out. The best payoff for Nebraska came in the South Dakota game with the visiting school getting only $10,000 of the $134,052.75 gate. The Huskers received in excess of $70,000 from two oi its five road games with IMinnesota paying $74,034.74 and Oklahoma turning over $78,871.55 for the game at Norman. However, even with the increased ticket sales, the NU athletic department would be continuing to run in the red were it not for public contributions from tlie Touchdown Club, Extra Point Club, Beef Club and Husker Achievement Awards.

Public contributions added $126,599.19 to the income side of the ledger. Without this money, the red ink w'ould be writing in a $40,099.38 loss figure. Tips Offered Ringnecks Open to Hunters; 45,000 Square Miles of Range Nebraska may be the capital of the but the pheasant is still king. production has made thf pheasant outlook brighter and this should be a fine according to M.O. Steen, Game Commission director. Couple this with the longest pheasant season 93 days beginning Saturday and Nebraska sportsmen can hunt pheasants until they are blue in the face. Nebraska boasts a whopping 45.000 square miles of ringneck range.

Prime spots this year can be found in a diagonal line, approximately four counties wide, which slashes the state from parts of Dixon, Cedar, and Knox counties in the northeast to Perkins, Chase, Dundy, and Hitchcock counties in the southwest. Even in the best areas, however, there may be local spots where birds are scarce.

It is well to know the pheasant and his habits before going afield, the Commission points out. Hunters must employ a variety of techniques to outwit the ever wary ringneck. Large groups of hunters can work big fields by driving the birds toward blockers stationed at the end. Drivers should maintain an advancing line to prevent birds from running to either side. For best action, hit the corn rows where the added cover will tend to make the birds sit tight.

Small groups of hunters can tackle smaller cover areas. And a word to the gunners can deliberately make birds flush by pausing frequently, a tactic which often unnerves the average cocky cock. When a hen flushes, look over the area for a rooster. Pheasants are usually in pairs and the male may not be as impetuous as his lady. On windy days, pheasants can be found in sloughs and weedy areas.

Hunt against the wind it muffles noise and gives dogs a chance to check the air. A dog is an invaluable companion when pheasant hunting. a roosters will run hard when hit. Use bad weather to an advantage. Birds hold well during a drizzle or light snowfall, and snow tends to concentrate pheasants in heavier cover, making them easier to locate.

During late afternoon hours, birds will move out of the corn fields and other feeding areas and head back to roosting cover, such as clover, stubble fields, weed patches, thickets or near abandoned buildings.
