Cyclone Tony Baker makes dive for Wachholtz 15) but the fleet Husker skips away (6) Wacholtz stiff-arms a tackier (7) and cuts for the sideline (8). A desperate dive by Cyclone Willie Robinson (9) throws Wachholtz off balance (10) and stopped (11). Churchich at Helm In 3rd Period Burst Continued from Page 1C from the 50 to the Iowa State four-yard line.

After Tatman was stopped for no gain and Duda lost four yards, the NU quarterback lofted a pass to reserve end Dennis Richnaf- sky who took the ball in the right corner of the field and leaped into the end zone with 11:24 left in the first half. Wachholtz booted the first of six straight extra point kicks for a 7-0 lead. The Huskers stopped Iowa State on the next series of downs and took over on their own 36 after a Cyclone punt. With Duda still at the controls, Nebraska moved the 64 yards in five plays with a 47-yard scamper by Tatman on a draw play picking up most of the yardage. Duda handed off to Wilson at the four-yard line for the tally with 7:39 left in the half.

Showing almost flawless execution near the end of the half, Duda drove the Huskers from their own four yard line to the Iowa State 14 in less than 90 seconds, utilizing passes to Solich, Richnafsky and White for the quick trip downfield. Then a pass was hobbled by Tony Jeter at the three- yard line and fell into the arms of Cyclone Dennis Esselmann, who retreated into the end zone to find running room. But all he found there was the waiting arms of Tatman who tackled the Iowa Stater for a two-point safety, giving the Huskers a 16-0 advantage with 21 seconds to go in the half. When Duda drove the Huskers to two quick second half touchdowns, it was all over but the counting. Nebraska took the second half kickoff and moved the ball 75 yards to score in 11 plays with Duda mixing the running and passing to perfection.

He hit Richnafsky with an 11-yard pass and White for one of the same distance, and mixed in a draw play to Wilson for 31 yards just to keep the Cyclones loose. Duda carried the ball over himself from the four- yard line for the score with 10:35 left in the third quarter. Iowa State fumbled the kickoff, and Bill Jdhnson recovered at the 27. Duda keep the fans waiting long as he uncorked a perfect pass on the first play that hit White in stride at the five and he loped into the end zone. When Wachholtz kicked another extra point, Nebraska led, 30-0.

a then gave Churchich a chance to redeem himself for a bad first quarter performance and the Omaha junior came through like a man fighting for his job. Churchich led the Huskers from the NU 27 to a score in 11 plays with the second offensive unit. Passes of 11 and 20 yards to Ben Gregory and a 14- yarder to Ken Brunk gobbled up much of the yardage. Winters lumbered through the Cyclone defenses for most of the remaining yardage including the final two yards into the end zone with 5:34 left in the third period. The final tally came with Churchich at the controls, directing a backfield of Rick Haasch, Dennis Morrison and Winters.

They moved 41 yards behind a line led by 264-pound sophomore Bob Taucher with all of the yardage coming on the ground. Winters bulled the iinal two yards for his second touchdown to end the scoring with 6:31 left in the contest. The revamped NU defense Has never fully tested by Iowa State passing as the Cyclones elected to try to run rather than pass, leaving press box occupants wondering if coach Clay Stapleton really meant rt when he said, get off the plane passing this However, the few times quarterback Tim Van Galder went back to pass, he found that passing from a prone position can be most difficult. Defensive end Langston Coleman was Van biggest nemesis, but he had help from middle guard Jerry Murphy, tackle Walt Barnes, linebacker Mike Kennedy and end Bill Huag. The Cyclones never got across the midfield stripe all day with the furthest penetration being to their own 48 despite the fact that Devaney played his second defensive unit much of the second half.

Yds. Kuehl I 10 Webster of IS; Huskers Number One By DON FORSYTHE think that that bad, but Nebraska is that reflected Iowa State coach Clay Stapleton after the 44-0 whipping the Cornhuskers handed his Cyclones Saturday. is perhaps the biggest mismatch that Iowa State will ever he continued. He was referring to sending his sophomore-1 a team against the veteran Cornhuskers. had some apprehensions about playing them because it was a mismatch to have to play so many sophomores.

Field position was against us in the first half and then things went from bad to Clay observed. Les Webster, the Omahan who led the Cyclones in rushing, also knew in advance that the No. 3 ranked Cornhuskers were a good team even better than I Les said, should be No. Webster allowed that the Cornhuskers had some good breaks. was mainly because of inexperienced sophomores like he said, noting that he had fumbled and lost the ball to Nebraska early in the game.

Cyclone quarterback Tim Van Galder, munching a sandwich as he recalled his pressure- filled afternoon, figured that Fred Duda, who suffered a broken leg in last Iowa State game, had a great deal to do with the outcome. probably surprised them (Nebraska) as much as he did he said, praising Duda for his leadership. Kirkland Out With Shoulder Muscle Injury A torn muscle in his right shoulder sidelined Nebraska left halfback Ron Kirkland early in game against Iowa State and may put the junior star out of commission for awhile. This was the most serious of three shoulder Injuries suffered by the Huskers. Reserve back Ken Brunk incurred a sbouller pointer, or siight separation, and defensive end a suffered a slight leg injury was the only other secoiMi half with shoulder ka casualty.

trouble. He is expected to be ready for the Wisconsin game, however. Tackle Richard Czap, who go a long he summed up his impressions of the Cornhuskers. Van Galder said that tbo Cyclones had hoped to throw the baU more than 12 times. when down inside your 10 yard line its no place to be he said.

Stapleton indicated that he thought the Cyclones came out of the game in good physical condition. problem now is to try to regroup and get them on an even course. When things go wrong young kids get their daubers down ahd when you really get he pointed out. Despite the drubbing Stapleton lose his sense of humor. said it was going to be like going bear hunting with a switch I guess that makes me a pretty good he quipped..
