"We played better ball," he said.

"It was our best all around offensive and defensive performance." He was happy with the pass defense, leaky against the Air Force a week ago but effective Saturday. "Our coverage was good and our rush was much better," he said. "Both of these things showed much improvement." He was happy with safety Larry Wachholtz, whe "played a good foot hall game." He was happy with reserve backs Weber, Ben Gregory and Charlie Winters with all the reserves, in fact. "We got down in there pretty deep today," he said. "We used every kid, with one or two exceptions, we intend to use the rest of the year." Gregory, he said, may be shifted to left half to replace starter Ron Kirkland, who suffered a torn shoulder muscle and could be sidelined for awhile.

Devaney also had some kind words for Iowa State. "I think Iowa State's young players made some mistakes today they won't make all year," he said. "They're a better football team than the score shows." Some of his players were not so kind. "I didn't think they were as fast or hit nearly as well as TCU or Air Force," said defensive back Bill Johnson. "And they didn't have near the passing attack, so we could think more about their running." "We stopped them quick, and that hurt tfreir confidence," said linebacker Mike Kennedy.

Tackle Walt Barnes, who was happy with his shift from middle guard to tackle, agreed. "They came out good and strong, but after we a couple of their fumbles they seemed to sag a little. The ball just bounced our way good." Box Scores the heel of car No. 24. Midwest Speedway owners Jerry Biskup and Jerry Gerdes will present trophies to the top drivers during a special intermission gram.

The weatherman has been a big problem for car racing buffs in Lincoln this year. But possibly a few more shows will stiil be run. Biskup and Gerdes say the schedule will be approached on a week to week basis for the remainder of the season. While Wilkinson will get the big trophy tonight, he can expect plenty of competition on the track from such veterans as Joe Saldana, George Od vody, Frank Brennfoerder, Lonnie Jensen, Larry Upton, Leon Lahodny and several others. Race time has been moved up to 7:30 p.m.

The pitching line up isn't firm but it probably will be Jim Kaat of the Twins against Koufax in a battle of southpaws in the second game. That would leave it up to Camilo Pascual, the Twins' right handed curve ball artist, against left handed Claude Osteen in the third game. The same three starters probably will work right back in rotation. If they go to the bullpen, Alston's ace is lefty Ron Per ranoski. The Twins' best is righthanded Al Worthington.
