THE KANSAS CITY TIMES MONDAY OCTOBER 5 1953 STUDENT DIES IN CRASH FETE FOR TV CHANNEL FORMER PRESIDENT APPEARS AT KCMO DEDICATION biutmi NEAR KEARNEY IS FATAL TO WARREN SANDERS 16 Car Driven by the Youth Strikes Loose Gravel on the Road and Overturns Pinning the Victim Others on Program Include a Missouri Representative Break-fast Club Master of Ceremonies and Four Mayors Harry Truman Richard Boiling representative from the fifth Missouri district and four mayors appeared last night on a program dedicating KCMO-TV Don McNeill and other members of the Breakfast Club show which will be broadcast from the Municipal Auditorium at 8 o'clock today also participated The television station on chan nel 5 has been operating about a week The former President said he always has been interested in television and the proper presentation of programs He said he believed KCMO-TV would provide competition in the television field and would add to the general welfare of Kansas City and vicinity Boiling termed the opening of the station a major event in the history of the city Mayor William Kemp of Kansas City Mayor Clark Tucker of Kansas City Kansas Mayor Robert Weatherford jr of Independence and Mayor Scharz of North Kansas City also spoke Staff announcers introduced the mayors Tom Evans president of the KCMO Broadcasting company introduced Truman Boiling Meredith vice-president and general manager of the Meredith Publishing company Des Moines and Payson Hall secretary-treasurer of the firm The publishing house has contracted to purchase KCMO and KCMO-TV REST FOR A COCHEL Former Editor Is in Good Condition at St Lnke'a Hospital A Cochel of Roan Ridge farm near Parkville was in good condition last night at St Luke's hospital He entered the hospital Wednesday for a periodic checkup Mr Cochel Is a former editor of The Weekly Kansas City Star Warren Sanders 16 a Kearney high school student was killed about 7:15 o'clock last night when his car overturned about three miles northeast of Kearney A passenger Haven Vassev 15 Kearney suffered bruises He was treated at home Vassey told a Clav Countv deputy sheriff that Sanders apparently lost control of the car after it ran into some loose gravel He said he jumped into the bark seat when he realized the car was going to overturn Sanders fell out of the vehicle as it overturned The car fell on the top part of his body He was killed instantly apparently Sanders a son of Mr and Mrs Warren Sanders was born in San Diego and moved with his parents to Kearney three years ago He was a junior in high school and was to have played the part of a detective in a class play He was a member of the Kearney Methodist church and was treasurer of his Sunday school class Also surviving are three sisters Miss Delores Ann Sander? and Miss Lola Esther Sanders of the home and Mrs Patricia Kep-hart Holt a brother Richard Gale Sanders of the home and the maternal grandmother Mrs Sarah Chaney Fulton Kas TWO INJURED IN CRASH Machine Goes Into Ditch Near Odessa Mo Mr and Mrs Oliver Hedges 2801 Linwood boulevard were injured yesterday when their motor car skidded and went into a ditch about two miles west of Odessa Mo Mrs Hedges suffered a jaw fracture and face lacerations Hedges suffered a chest injury and lacerations They were taken to the Trinity Lutheran hospital Hedges is employed at the Ford assembly plant Mrs Hedges is an employee of the Searle Pharmaceutical com THE SMILING EMCEE OF THE BREAKFAST CLUB arrived at the Municipal Air Terminal yesterday afternoon with other members of the A network show Don McNeill and his secretary Miss Helen Hayes are shown about to leave the terminal in a motor car The Breakfast Club will originate in the Arena of the Municipal Auditorium from 8 to 9 o'clock this morning The Breakfast Club gave a benefit performance here in November 1948 for the Children's Mercy hospital The cast includes Eddie Ballentine the orchestra leader Sam Cowling comedian Don Cherry and Eileen Paiker vocalists Fran Allison who is Aunt Fanny on the show and Cliff Peterson producer and Swedish dialogue (Kansas City Star photograph THEY LOSE IN THEFTS!
