of Auditors Jefferson criticism of the accounting methods employed by Dr McGaugh state health corn missioner in handling federal funds entrusted to the board of health by the state board of education is contained in tin audit of the funds made by examiners from the office of Forrest Smith state auditor announced last week The audit was made as a result of an investigation started by Roy McKittriek attorney-general after 175 cancelled checks drawn on federal funds in the health department office had been found in the Mississippi River at St Louis October 17 The checks apparently had been stolen from the health department office here Immediately after the audit was made public Dr McGaugh handed his resignation to Governor Park in a brief note: 'Please accept my resignation effective as of November 30" A brief statement was made by Governor Park: "I believe the troubles of Dr McGaugh were largely the result of a poor system of bookkeeping" the statement read "and there was no Intention on the part of Dr McGaugh to misappropriate any funds The report of the state auditors shows that every cent due the state and federal government has been accounted for" No indication was given by Governor Park as to the successor for Dr McGaugh at the head of the state's health service but it is reported that Dr Harry Parker of Warrensburg widely known member of the American Legion has the indorsement of Pendergast and of Senator Clark A BETTER LIVESTOCK OUTLOOK Missouri Economist Gives a Foreast for 1937 Columbia produclion for 1937 looks generally favorable and from the standpoint of numbers to be marketed both hogs and cattle are in very strong positions It was stated in the November economic farm review which was issued here by Wood member of the agricultural economics faculty of the Missouri College of Agriculture Prospective small market receipts the result of farmers desiring to increase the unusually low number On farms together with expectation of a strong opcynsumer demand indicate higher prices for all classes of meat animals in the latter part of 1937 Wood raid adding that with normal crop production next year feeding ratios should become very favorable for livestock producers FOX 1VOLILDN7 BE IIVATED 1issouri Bounds and Their Own es Are Fooled for Once St Joseph Mo--A group of dog owners gathered near here last week bent on a blood-warming fox hunt to Hundreds of truck loads of cedar trees have been passing through the district on the way to the large cities Where the trees are to be placed on Sale Taney County is one of the largest producers in discussions will be small fruits peaches and marketing problems The strawberry and peach discussions will be of special interest because of the intention of many growers to replace their plantings Children Marshall of letters now are pouring into a little 3-room home at the outskirts of Marshall Every one of these letters from children and parents is to be answered and they will carry the greeting: "Yours for a happy Christmas Santa Claus" Santa Claus (that's his real name) Is a busy man these days All day long he is employed in a local NIA yard and at quitting time he rushes home to change clothing and lead a revival meeting at the Church of God of which he is a pant-time pastor Then there are the letters that have to be answered and this takes him well into the night AN EXPLANATION OF NAME "My father had a sense of humor" says Mr Claus in attempting to explain his unusual name There may be other people who bear the name but Mr Claus never has heard of them "Naturally when I was a child I took a lot of punishment over my name I continually was the object of jokesters and as I grew older the name had its drawbacks Imagine for instance what luck I had making a purchase and telling the clerk in the store to 'charge it to Santa Claus' Matters were even worse when I attempted to cash a personal check where I was not known "Gradually however I got used to the name and it ceased to be a source of irritation to me Now that I have grown older and have seen more of life I am thankful I was named Santa and my only wish is that I could live up to the tradition of the children's saint" Mr Claus explained that not one of his seven children was named after him "At tne time the children were arriving my wife and I discussed naming one of the boys after me but I decided the name was too much of a burden Now I wish that one of them had been named Santa because I see the good that can be accomplished in having such a name" A NAME OF RESPONSIBILITY And Santa Claus takes his name in all seriousness Some of the letters he receives bear childish thumb smudges and always an appeal to be remembered at Christmas time Other letters are from parents asking that he write to Junior or Jane and assure them there actually is a Santa Claus Mr Claus deals with each letter personally This takes time and money and each year he tries to find a way to meet the postage bill so that no child will be disappointed Working at odd jobs around Marshall and as a part-time minister Mr Claus finds his salary all too meager to per form all the things he would like to do "Last Christmas when I was in New York to appear on the radio with Robert ''Believe It or Not" Ripley I bought my youngest daughter a doll She really was thrilled over it because it came all the way from New York and was given her by Santa Claus personally This year if I am able I want to get her a buggy for the doll" Christmas is not always one of Joy in the home of Santa Claus Three years ago a few days before Christmas the daughter of Mr and Mrs Claud died Two years ago he was in an accident and broke his right leg But last year was more cheerful and this year although times have been bad for him Santa and his family will hang up their stockings and await the arrival of the better-known "Santa Claus" NOW ni 48 YEARS OLD Born in Saline County forty-eight years ago Mr Claus unlike his noted namesake has not traveled widely The New York trip last Christmas was the longest For a time he Was employed by a large utility in St Louis and in that connection he tells an interesting story "When I went to work down there" he said "the timekeeper asked me my name I told him it was Santa Claus He sort of smiled and wrote it down that way probably thinking I was giving him a smart answer A few days later the treasurer of the company came out to where I was working and demanded to know my real name The only way I could convince him was to have him call friends in Marshall who knew me I didn't attempt to cash any checks down there either" From now until after the first of the year Santa Claus will be in demand at church functions throughout North Missouri And sometimes it isn't such a simple matter to con In a period of seven years five sons and daughters of Mr and Mrs Ed Peterson Hermitage Hickory County Missouri were graduated from the Hermitage high school Their names from large family But because of his name he bears his burden with a smile and be has the heart of the Santa Claus of tradition AN ACCUSED MURDERER DIES Alismouriatt 89 Awaited Teta for Killing
