The News Observer Raleigh NC Friday Dec 18 1992 3D A greeting for every persuasion day cards has two men arm in arm with backs turned and trailed by two dogs and a message inside of "Laurel Hardy Lucy Ricky (Etc) You Me" Most gay or lesbian cards are joke and gag cards They tend to be sexual in nature especially those aimed at gay men (ones for lesbians have always been tame) and are produced by tiny companies "I thought this was an Overlooked market segment" said Stevens who is heterosexual "It struck me and some gay friends that there just weren't many tasteful high-quality products around which astounded me There are millions of cards for me" Cardthartic Inc in Chicago It relies on lesbian and gay artists and writers to produce genteel and droll cards found in about 75 mostly gay-oriented stores in 30 states Thus it produces a card with a gray-haired mom sitting at a table with a chagrincd-looking adult son and declaring: "Oh honey you just think you're gay You just haven't met the right girl yet" The most popular of its Christmas line shows a tranquil snowy scene with a tree topped by a pink triangle a symbol of gays (it sells for $150 apiece or $18 for a box of 12) There's also one with Santa Claus in his workshop surrounded by elves hugging one another and the message: "What you didn't know? Happy Holidays" The most popular of its every Then Aunt Nancy the quirky librarian and Republican stalwart who disowned her son for supporting Jimmy Carter surfaced wearing an ACT UP T-shirt and talking non-stop about her "awakening" and craving for the music of kd lang her subscription to the Advocate and her decision at age 66 to begin lifting weights and taking up tennis after meeting Martina Navratilova Well you want to drop everybody a deeply sincere "Great to see you again" line It's a bit easier now that Jodee Stevens has entered a small but changing field: gay and lesbian greeting cards Stevens 37 recently left her job running a public relations firm and with four partners (three straights and one gay) started By JAMES WARREN Chicago Tribune "TT" could have happened dur- I I ing that grand American II tradition: a stress-filled holiday dinner with your family You arrived and quickly said hello to your folks and then to recently divorced Uncle Bill his two kids and Bill's new love interest: Ralph an accountant who likes bowling and Elton John You turned mistakenly into a bedroom to find your niece Mar-cie now a college sophomore not staring at the football game with everybody else but smooching with her significant other an aspiring poet named Cindy north a 4 A 10 9 6 A 10 8 4 WEST EAST I Q9 3 K6 8 VAK9542 8532 74 J5 32 Q96 SOUTH Xi AJ 10 8 7 52 kj K7 Vulnerable: Both Dealer: North The bidding: North East South West 14 IV 1 Pass- 2 Pass 4 All pass Opening lead: Heart queen" BID WITH THE ACES 12-18-B South holds: K6 A 9 5 4 2 74 Q9 6 North South 1 1 ANSWER: Three hearts Issue a strong invitation to game Partner should continue with any hand that will offer a reasonable play for game Send bridge questions to The Aee PO Box 12363 Dallas Texas 75225 with self-addressed stamped envelope for reply Copyrtgtt U91 United Future Syndicate "For fools rush fn where angels fear to tread" Alexander Pope By BOBBY WOLFF "A trick is a trick" said West as he foolishly overruffed at trick three "What's yours is yours" countered South "What's mine I'll keep" The defense started with three high hearts and South enticingly ruffed the third one with his jack West greedily overruffed with his queen and it proved to be a costly mistake South won West's exit in dummy and led a trump to finesse against East's king and there were no further problems East's trump king fell doubleton and South had his 10 winners Why was West's overruf a ooliEh move? His trump queen was a sure winner now or later so why should he be in a hurry to win immediately? The Q-9-3 holding might prove to be a critical combination later in the play And thanks to partner's king it would indeed Had West discarded instead of overruffing he would have developed the setting trick Regardless of how South played the trump suit after that he could not avoid the loss of two trump tricks and one down When there's no obvious gain from winning a trump trick immediately it's often best to wait in hopes of developing another Langford newly departed come back to life because of some Venusian radia- tion Keith Wayne has been dead and gone for a good 20 years But that was Keith Wayne being interviewed by Joe Bob Briggs last week Keith Wayne who will be among the centerpieces of a horror film convention this summer Keith Wayne who is knocking on the door And it is Dr Keith Hartman who has to decide whether to answer it "I left that person" he says softly "I divorced that person I buried that person and now that person is being resurrected And it's frankly difficult "It's schizophrenic as hell He wants to noticed He wants to admired He wants to be respected for that ability that he had "It is difficult It wasn't a month ago but it's becoming more difficult because I have to dealwithit" Does he want to get to know that person again? "Yes I do Because unless I deal with that I'm really not going to be happy I'm either going to have to grieve this person or I'm going to have to marry it into the life that I have now I don't want to not confront it I want to hold it in my hands" And there is that glimmer of hope that maybe just maybe Keith Wayne and Dr Keith Hartman can coexist "Would I want to do a film?" he asks "I'd love it" "I should have taken this film and I should have marshaled it into a career But I didn't Because I didn't know how to do it" In fact if Hartman had had his way he probably wouldn't have been an actor or a musician or anything close to it It was his parents who wanted him to be a musician "I really wanted to be an engineer" Say what? "I know" he says "It's incredible" He ended up in Cary after talking to a Raleigh chiropractor named Williams He was just getting out of school he needed a place to practice and Cary was a growing town with lots of potential spinal problems He still gets in front of a camera once a week Hartman was the 1990 national champion power lifter in his weight class and does a TV show on weight training on the religious Victory Television Again all this seems a bit incongruous That a guy who starred in a movie where dead people ate the flesh off his bones (sorry I let it slip) is now "a staunch supporter" of a religious television station "Hell" he says "it's 27 years "As long as dialogue as long as nudity as long as violence stems from the flow of the production and the piece then it's not vulgar Nothing in our film was done that way" In the movie which to say the least is not for the squeamish the Director Romero would tell the cast what he wanted out of a scene and they they would make up the lines as they went along "It was totally ad lib" Hartman says shaking his head "That's unbelievable" Hartman was to the best of his knowledge the only person in front of the camera or behind it who got paid The film has become a legal quagmire but he opted to take $1 500 plus expenses instead of 2 percent of the gross It was his dad a Pittsburgh steel-worker who talked him into it "He said 'Son do you need a new "I said 'Yeah' "He said 'Take the money' He ended up getting a great big Lincoln Like his film career and his music career for that matter that car is a distant memory So what happened? How did Keith Wayne movie actor and singer become Ronald Hartman Cary chiropractor? "I got to a point in my life where I wanted to have some control" he says "I didn't want wake up at 40 or 50 and not be in control" But this had to be such heady stuff Why didn't he take his film to Hollywood get himself an agent and knock on every studio door in town? "Why? I can't tell you I can't tell you I met Brenda Fox Hartman and I fell in love with her and she agreed to be my wife and she and I decided I wanted some other things I wanted some regular stuff at Price Continued from page ID named George Romero On the side Romero was making this low-budget horror flick about zombies who walked funny and ate human flesh One thing led to another and Hartman had himself a part He played Tom the young guy who ends up well never mind No one ever said things looked better the morning after the "Night of the Living Dead" Hartman is undeniably and understandably proud of what he calls "our film" And what it has become "We did some splatter stuff" the 47-year-old father of two says "that was unheard of at the time" While the movie was in production outside Pittsburgh Hartman was playing at a place called The Gaity Follies in Myrtle Beach He'd leave Myrtle on Sunday mornings at 7 fly to Washington catch a plane to Pittsburgh be on the set at 3 in the afternoon act all week then leave Pittsburgh Wednesday afternoon for Myrtle and play all weekend "What was that like? The best I can remember was that it was the best of times to live How was it? It was fantastic There wasn't a dull moment Nothing was dull" One reason was that "Night of the Living Dead" had no script Location Convenient Complimentary Buffet To All Malls Breakfast Van Service Whirlpool Suites Available Great Price Health Club Privileges single or double 1 Comfort Suites Crabtree Hotel 3908 Arrow Dr Raleigh NC (919) 782-6868 1-800-521-7521 Call 829-46O0 Toll Free in North Carolina 1-800-662-6040' BUY IT! Bait? Not quite But if you shop from the Sundance Catalog the next time you go fishing you can wear the "River Runs Through It" all-cotton T-shirt pack a snack of Sundance Granola and carry the "River Runs Through It" knife The knife is engraved with a fishing scene and the movie's title on one side a quote from Norman Maclean's novella (the film's source) on the other This is consumerism with a tasteful upscale slant: $25 for the shirt $2750 for a 4-pound tin of granola $210 for the knife but where else can you buy a sharp object that reads "In our family there was no clear line between religion and The mail-order catalog is itself a tie-in to Redford's Sundance Institute which fosters the work of independent filmmakers Redford writes in an introduction "We drew on the heritage of the American West blending the art of native Americans and other Western crafts people with examples from around the world" Which means you can own the Walking Moose Candlestick the Sundance Reindeer Wall Sconce or the Nostalgic Geronimo Lamp with a hand-painted terra-cotta figure of "the famous Indian chief" on its base If you regard a catalog as entertainment you'll want to know there are three photos of Redford in the Holiday 1992 edition one of which shows him behind a camera The accompanying text reads "Robert Redford would like to invite you" to contribute to a fund to save the polluted Blackfoot River where Maclean and his brother fished No hard sell here but Redford must know something about "money "A River Runs Through It" the movie not the knife has be-' come an unexpected box-office i hit Horsey Sweaters Down Sweatshirts Reduced Sale Items not Included Mon-Fri 10-6 Sat 10-5 Carolina Parent I 1 i 7iltl Tl y- WW ii the Triangle's guide to resources lor iamihes ana children February: Summer Camps Family Finances Maternity Birthday Parties Summer Fun August: Back to School September: Working Parents October: Education November: Family Relations DecJan: Winter Holidays March: April: May: JuneJuly: I Name I Address i 10 Iww I The News Observer City State rnone I Send check for $1 2 Der vear (1 0 issues) to: I For Home Delivery Call 829-4700 i i 3 iteviilfcii I Carolina Parent PO Box 51775 Durham NC 27717 I I I.
