6D The News Observer Raleigh NC Friday Aug 2 1991 Inspiring cast creates a dazzling rendition of 'Cinderella' I flowing from inside the palace to the privacy of the castle grounds as the clock ticks on to midnight Although Norman Coates' light- ing is much too dark for the vivacious show Eduardo Cicangco's beautiful and functional set manages to dominate the production that is marked by stunning special effects especially when the pumpkin becomes a royal coach And the cast is inspiring Tim Caudle is funny as the tubby King But Ruth Martinez Tutterow is re gal and maternal as the Queen Her big bright voice makes "Boys and Girls Like You and Me" dance Bob Wrenn makes the Stepmother a caricature of the pushy mother Hal Hudson's Portia the intellectual sister is amusing But Lauren Kennedy gets far more humor out of Joy the near-sighted sister The real scene-stealer though is Patti Allison as the gluttonous Fairy Godmother who is rather unsure of her powers It's easy to turn Cinderella's slippers to glass but when it comes to mice and a pumpkin well it takes Cinderella's deep desire to turn the "Impossible" to "It's Possible" a zesty duet between the two AJ Vincent is a charming Prince Tall thin graceful with a fine deep voice he sings "Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful" with the elan to win a real princess But better yet he does get the gentle wistfully agile Dana Lyn Caruso whose Cinderella is sweetly fragile and completely de: lightful Ms Caruso's rendition of "My Own Little Corner" is haunt-: ing and her "A Lovely Night" is exuberant She gives a lovely performance in a role that could easily be mere stereotype NC Theater's "Cinderella" is a treat for all fresh and winning "Cinderella" runs tonight at 8 pm and Saturday and Sunday at 2 pm and 8 pm at Raleigh Memorial Auditorium 831-6060 By HARRY HARGRAVE Correspondent Theater review orth Carolina Theater's production of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical version of "Cinderella" is pure magic With dazzling special effects gorgeous scenery and a talented young cast of players the classic story of the chargirl who becomes a princess comes again vibrantly to life Terrence Mann directs the story with a light touch that emphasizes the humor rather than the menace of the stepmother and the ugly stepsisters And Allison Sherve's choreography makes the ball scene a visual delight gracefully PTF owners betray the viewers Sonny shares bares all 1 I it I I '-'4'" I 7 siy: 4s i 11NN has seen the news die before only to return but this time it was different Last time no one lost a job Last time there was talk of documentaries and retooling "This time they pulled the plug completely" he said "There are new owners and there's nothing left At least before there was some kind of future" Mitchell Lewis technically still has one He'll read five minutes of news from 11:30 to 11:35 in NBC's new extended local time Some commitment to the community huh? If FSF wanted to make a worse impression on its first day I don't know how it could have So what could the new owners be thinking? We'll never know At 9 pm Wednesday new general manager Vickie Street not only kicked her own reporters out of the building she booted everyone with a note pad and a pen "No one is allowed in here without my permission" she said looking for all the world like a "60 Minutes" cliche What are they hiding over there in the broadcasting bunker?
