1 alsoltmNcEoRDA She's a tough campaigner for her husband but some think Hillary Clinton should be the candidate i 'iiibio 'H A i 'Or1t" Watch Hillar 06k w615 05: e4 t7 -4 On the campaign trail it's sometimes hard to tell that Hillary Clinton isn't the candidate The message she brought to North Carolina seemed to be as much hers as her husband's While in the state Wednesday she gave a live television interview met with the reporters and visited a day care center in Greensboro qr Local news gets earlier and earlier trAII the anecdotal evidence '7 indicates that people are going to bed A earlier and waking up earlier 't But here's -e10 the proof: Local stations are changing their programming And you know they wouldn't pay employees overtime to do it if there weren't people out there watching WRAL has already pushed its morning newscast back to 6 am and WTVD will do the same at the end of the month And the last week in August or the first week in September WLFL will start a half-hour newscast for people who don't want to stay up to make it through the 11 o'clock news "We did focus groups and research and it was very clear" says general manager Bud Polacek "People want an alternative and they'd like it at 10 o'clock" Polacek has allotted $26 million of owner Paramount's money toward getting a third newscast on the air Much of it is already spent: on cameras a weather package a graphics package computers And on 10000 square feet of adjacent office space that will house the newsroom and set That's a pretty serious commitment One that won't fizzle out Polacek promises after a couple of bad ratings books "I've signed a 10-year lease and spent $26 million Ratings don't mean a hill of beans We're in it" LFL promises to do a pretty much straight newscast As program director Mel House says "The news is the news" Independent news operations usually aren't as slick as network affiliates' and at their worst they are more sensational What will give LFL's news a chance to succeed where WPTF's didn't Polacek figures is the time slot This is part of a network effort LFL is one of 21 Fox affiliates starting a news operation this fall On the other end of the viewing day WRAL kind of snuck its newscast on a half-hour early last week and it's still a work in progress RAL wanted to get out of the blocks ahead of wrva "We decided to shake it down on the air" says general manager Fred Barber Right now RAL's early news anchored by Bill Leslie and Renee McCoy is pretty much two straight newscasts back-to-back Over the next six weeks it will evolve into one broadcast with some lighter features Tva which has hired John Clark from Nashville to co-anchor with Monica Shuman won't crank up its hourlong early morning edition until after the current ratings period See LANGFORD page 2D ''-nr 7 10 I I 1 11 tdiI WU 11101WIMPWANIN li IISITi 011'14V" MMINI4rir P0111 sawmt MORO NosentintNlioussm 1 i 1 -'t ill I I 0) CI 0 v473 L) r3 (l) 2 III II a INNS EY I niM "I wanted to come to Greensboro to do what I could to communicate the message of my husband's campaign" she told the crowd outside a day care center for children from low-income families It was the perfect photo opportunity: Hillary Clinton lawyer mother candidate's wife stooping one minute to praise a child and railing the next against George Bush's economic policies The press was there ready to record every sound bite But it was unclear which message was getting through As she worked her way around the room taking advantage of any opportunity to launch into a discussion of her husband's education goals one political reporter looked up from his notebook long enough to study the suit Clinton was wearing "Is that what you'd call gingham check?" Ever since Hillary Clinton appeared with her husband on "60 Minutes" to defend her marriage against charges of infidelity she has become something of a litmus test for a new generation of candidates' wives If she speaks out forcefullY about the issues she is criticized for being too aggressive If she forgives Bill Clinton for his alleged transgressions she is too weak If she occasionally steals the spotlight from him she is too ambitious Working mothers tend to see her as a role model But other women wonder why it isn't she instead of her husband who is running for office "I'm listening to him" said Maly Jeffries director of an education program in a Greensboro housing project "But I'm watching her" At this point in the campaign Bill Clinton is virtually assured of the Democratic presidential nomination But the Clintons have their eyes on the November election and ultimately the White House That's why Hillary Clinton was in North Carolina on Wednesday stumping for her husband before Tuesday's state primary He followed her with an appearance in Chapel Hill on Thursday See CLINTON page 6D Sharpe 1 AV 1' AAVaWkVarrif dresses As for the horse people you can spot them by two accessories: binoculars (they're actually watching the horses remember?) and hoof picks 3 TAILGATING Steeplechase tailgating is as much like football tailgating as dinner at Magnolia Grill is like scarfing a burger at Char-Grill Accoutrements include white linen tablecloths china and centerpieces of fresh spring flowers At least one piece of silver such as a candelabra or wine bucket is required If your tailgate isn't attached to a Range Rover use a table 4 BUTLER SERVICE Caterers say it's a highly requested item They wear black tie and the ratio is two butlers to a group of about 30 5 ICE SCULPTURES Spotted on tailgates at Stonybrook and Tanglewood in Winston-Salem 6 DOGS People who are members of Ili I 11 tnii r-a 4-i li3O11111 1 1 445 k''''': -0- 4MtKi seP Photos by Scott 4 kifty 4 '0 fact that steeplechases actually were started for horses The name comes from the original practice of running across country with a distant church steeple as the finish line Raleigh's event will have traditional steeplechases which involve jumps and water hazards flat races like the Kentucky Derby and races for specific breeds 2 HATS Required for women They should look as if the White House Rose Garden fell on your head Outlandishly decorated hats are such a steeplechase staple that Stonybrook near Southern Pines has a hat contest each year Under the hats the look is Southern casual elegance Men go to one of two extremes either coat and tie or wild tropical shirts and neatly pressed Bermuda shorts Rumor has it that some plan to wear black tie for Raleigh's first Women wear nice spring I l''1 -A i 2P it: INEIL --1 i''1 45 It- cgr 3 (y 91 4 164410 A 6 1 tolli l'ill i A (Ili ocr) '''l 0 1 411114 -i T) 1 1 Br 1 IA I -a 111' Time for some serious horsing aroupd ri 1 k1 tiOt 0 un 6 0 )- t' 6 'If ELI 1 A 01 7 '('' '( 2 ()'' 4 T1 4 -t 1 i' L4 4111 ik rIC 2 i I i 11-1" 1 4 --) iI fr i '7-' 1 le 11 I 1 -1! 1 i 1 A ('0 kir ils lta Keith Simmons The News Observer hunt clubs often bring them along So do horse people 7 BEVERAGES You need plenty of them The traditional drink is the Mint Julep of Kentucky Derby fame 8 STEEPLECHASE FOOD It isn't buckets of Kentucky Fried Chicken Some menu items mentioned by caterers and steeplechase devotees: boiled shrimp turkey croissants hot crabmeat fondue (kept warm in silver chafing dishes) boiled eggs topped with caviar pecan tarts chess pies Carolina National Steeplechase Saturday Wakefield Farm Falls of the Neuse Road Events held rain or shine Gates open at 10 am post time is 1 pm Nine races will be held Also sky diving jazz band and other activities Tickets $7 in advance $10 at event Information 832-2768 A steeplechase guide for novices By DEBBIE MOOSE Staff writer he Carolina National Steeples chase will be on Saturday Because it's the first steeplechase in Raleigh some of you may not know how to participate properly As a public service we offer the following tips for the uninitiated Two types of people generally are found at steeplechases: horse people and party people All horse people need for a steeplechase are horses Party people require a few more accessories 1 HORSES Nobody watches them except horse people This in spite of the.
