Steve Koprosid Unsung: NCSU reserve tailback Carlos Feaster who had 44 yards on eight carries Key stat: Kent had four turnovers and two of its punts were blocked the Pack did not have a turnover night for the former Garner High flash It was quite an offensive contrast from a week ago when the yards came hard what few there were against Virginia Tech The Pack won the opener but only by a 7-0 margin and State quarterback Terry Jordan and his teammates on the offensive unit had forlorn looks when it was over But it all worked this night The Pack which didn't have a turnover closed with 260 yards rushing Jordan was 10-of-14 passing for 153 yards and two TDs Quarterback Geoff Bender a redshirt freshman also made his first appearance late in the third quarter and quickly produced firing 46-yard sideline strike to sophomore receiver Ray Griffis Griffis' first collegiate catch "We executed well eliminating mistakes and putting points on the board" Sheridan said "From confidence standpoint it was good for us "Terry took last week very hard and a lot of it wasn't his responsibility He did have a poor game but the only way to get over it is to come back and have a good game and he ran the offense well" As for the Wolfpack defense the back-to-back shutouts were the first for State since 1977 and the first time since 1942 that the Pack began the season with consecutive shutouts State also blanked Duke 16-0 in its regular-season finale last fall After intercepting five Hokies passes last week and causing seven turnovers in all the Pack added another four take-aways against Kent three fumbles and an interception Safety Mike Reid was a one-man demolition team the first half blasting through See WOLFPACK page 88 ECU tops Memphis St by 20-13 By AJ CARR Staff writer GREENVILLE Now nobody's going to start drawing comparisons between East Carolina and Southern Cal But the Pirates did do something Saturday night the Trojans couldn't accomplish They beat bully-boy Memphis State team 20-13 dominating the fourth quarter and pushing across the winning touchdown with less than eight minutes left A crowd of 32382 turned out steamy Fick len Stadium for the home opener and were restless much of the night as ECU battled to even its record at 1-1 But the partisans probably were not nearly as restless as Tigers' touted defense which kept wondering from which direction versatile Dion Johnson might strike next The 5-foot-8 Pirate flanker doesn't do the "Tennessee Waltz" He dances to a faster tempo and MSU couldn't keep step with him and his Pirates this night particularly down the stretch He caught 4 passes for 40 yards See ECU page 8B Winning fans a tough game DURHAM In heat so hostile it made Wallace Wade Stadium playing conditions almost intolerable Duke's football team tried to make a few friends Saturday "I'm dying to see some people in those end-zone seats" Scott Youmans said "It's up to us to put them there" In a 42-22 win over a decent Rutgers team the Blue Devils did their best to impress a disappointingly sparse home-opener audience of 15000-plus Quarterback Dave Brown threw long often and accurately Wide receiver Walter Jones caught a small carton of touchdowns Youmans too short to be a good defensive lineman mowed down blockers as though they were talent critics The defense anted up a couple of touchdowns via long interception returns And Duke picked for five wins maybe six at the outside went to 1-0-1 with a futures market that could pay 5-0-1 by Halloween Yet there were few takers in the stands "It's a little disappointing" Brown said "to look around and not see the big crowd But the students are there and that's good Hopefully people will look at what we did today scoring on long plays and creating some excitement and get involved with us" Amid the victory celebration Youmans said the Devils discussed the turnout and vowed to help the school's promotions department increase business "We told ourselves we have a chance to get something going again to get the fans back" Youmans said "We win a few now in a row and they'll come They came a couple of years ago They're just waiting to see if we deserve them" While Duke was hoping for 20000 or maybe even 25000 for what could have been billed as a New Jersey civil war athletics director Tom Butters said he expec- ted a tough Sell "The game was on regional vision" Butters said "Three other games are being played in the area tonight: It turned out to be an extremely hot afternoon "And realistically we have to look at the numbers We just don't have a large alumnus group We're never going to have that large population of graduates to draw on" In the student section the support that Brown sensed definitely existed The famous basketball crazies were wired from the start and Duke's New Jersey-student factor figured "There's pretty good interest on campus" Brown said "Coming back last week to tie South Caro- lin created a lot more enthusiasm than I thought it would actually You could hear 'em out there today In that heat it took some dedication for them to stand there and make noise" The odds are that Duke fans will not have a great football team to back this season The ground game with top rusher Randy Cuthbert ailing and young blockers basically guessing at times is going to struggle The kicking game is far below average right now but that may improve De- fensive depth is always going to be a Duke liability But as much as anything else the Blue Devils need a genuine football atmosphere It was present in '89 and there's no question that it helped Proportionately it probably would help even more this season A student with his shirt off his khaki shorts rolled up and a cup of ice in each hand said Duke foot- ball would have to find more fans in the same manner Duke basketball did by stealing them "We have to convert fans from other schools" he said "Look at all the people who were Carolina basketball fans a couple of years ago who are Duke fans now They have to be shown the light" But footballs and basketballs are not apples and apples and Youmans in spite of much individual over-achievement may not see a full Wallace Wade Stadium this NC State coach Dick Sheridan figuring he needed an attention grabber Saturday night before the Wolfpack took on Kent State decided to relate an afternoon football score to his players: To wit: Central posting another shutout Why Central Michigan? "I wanted 'em to know how concerned I was about this game" Sheridan said after NCSU boosted its record to 2-0 "I told 'em teams all across the country that weren't supposed to win were winning "Central Michigan's from the Mid-American Conference just like Kent State They weren't supposed to beat a Big Ten team but they did and I'm sure gan State probably wasn't 'ready to play "Hopefully I made anlmpres Sheridan did The Golden Flashts definitely overthatched' barely survived to halftimein the rare night game tit Carter-Finley The Pack scoring on its last six possesgiong of the half notched 24 second-period points while opening a comfortable 34-0 cushion "Coming into the game it seemed like our minds weren't on business" said Wolfpack receiver Charles Davenport who had a 25-yard touchdown grab in the second quarter "We were talking about everything and anything except the game "Coach didn't want us to be knocked off like Michigan State We wanted to knock Kent out early not let them hang around?
