The News and Observer Raleigh NC Saturday April 131991 3C NFL will revisit Carolinas in August Finch among finalists for AD post at UNC-W The Associated Press for the Richardsons said he is confident the game will be sold out Muhleman said the Richardsons have more time and money to invest in promoting the game And they also have something else the Washington Redskins "This is Redskins country" he said This is also football country where on Saturdays in autumn 80000 flock to Death Valley to see Clemson play and 65000 to 72400 journey to Williams-Brice to watch South Carolina "We think South Carolina is a better football state by tradition than North Carolina" Muhleman said "We know that the tradition's here" Ticket prices will be $24 and $19 The price of a ticket for last year's game in Columbia was $25 Just what are Richardson's chances of landing an NFL team? The view of those at the news conference including Washington Redskins assistant general manager Bobby Mitchell was that Richardson had a good shot but was not a shoo-in "Most owners feel that a new market is going to bring more money" Mitchell said "As long as that feeling is there that gives these guys the Richardsons a very good chance of getting a team" Mitchell said many feel one of the two sites for an expansion team will go to a city that has lost an NFL team such as Baltimore That Wednesday said that they are hoping to fill the 72000-seat stadium for the 7 pm game If they do that it would be the largest NFL exhibition crowd ever at a neutral site The record now is 71314 set Aug 19 1973 in Columbus Ohio in a game between Cleveland and Cincinnati The elder Richardson a former NFL player said a sellout at Williams-Brice Stadium "could be the pivotal and final ingredient in winning an NFL expansion franchise for the Carolinas" A year ago 51238 people watched Chicago beat Buffalo 35-7 in the first NFL exhibition game in South Carolina in 23 years For that game George Shinn Enterprises Inc whose owner also owns the NBA's Charlotte Hornets got a late promotional start and didn't seem to excite fans about the game The Richardsons haven't had those problems in their first two exhibition games in North Carolina In 1989 a crowd of 52885 packed 45000-seat Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh to see the Jets slip past the Philadelphia Eagles Last year a capacity crowd of 52036 saw the Atlanta Falcons down the Redskins at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill A less-than-packed Williams-Brice Stadium would be an embarrassment and would not be the signal the Richardsons want sent to the NFL owners when they sit down to decide which two cities will be given expansion teams But Max Muhleman marketing consultant "Obviously I am enthusiastic enough to follow through after being asked" Finch said Charlie Carr an associate athletic director at East Carolina and Jim Bass assistant athletic director for marketing at ECU Villanova AD Ted Aceto former Louisiana Tech AD Paul Miller and Virginia Tech assistant AD Danny Monk are the other candidates according to UNC-W sports information director Joe Browning Interviews are scheduled to begin next week Carr was a two-sport athlete at UNC and formerly the athletic director at Mississippi State Bass an NC State graduate held a marketing and promotions position at UNC-W before joining the East Carolina staff AJ CARR NC State associate athletic director Nora Lynn Finch is among the six finalists scheduled to inter- view for the UNC-Wil- 0- It mingrton ath- -54 letics direc- 1 -a ti tor's position 11 CI 4 Ii Finch who val has served on 1 7 the NCSU l' staff 13 -4" years was nominated Finch for the UNC-W post and joined an original list of more than 160 applicants seeking to fill the shoes of longtime AD Bill Brooks Brooks will officially retire this summer Though nominated for several other athletic director openings Finch said this is the first time she has applied COLUMBIA SC It'll be more than just another NFL exhibition game Aug 24 when the Washington Redskins meet the New York Jets at Williams-Brice Stadi- 4 UM It'll be Spartanburg businessman Jerry Richardson's third and 1 last chance on the foot- 1 ball field to show the 100 NFL that the Carolinas specifically Charlotte NC are worthy of an expansion team "The sellouts for Carolinas Kickoff I and II were instrumental in showing the NFL exactly what kind of football Jerry Richardson fans we have in the Carolinas" said Richardson's son Mark general manager of Richardson Sports "Carolinas Kickoff HI is shaping up to be the most important game to date "The reason it's so important is it appears this game will be done right in the middle of the time the NFL will be evaluating the expansion markets This is the last opportunity we have to show the NFL that the Carolinas are ready for professional football" Toward that end the Richardsons who announced the game at a news conference IMdt1 Mucleats cruise to first win Pct GB 10 Str Home Away Eastern Bark plays well but Keys win next 5 days I 0 I 000 I-0 W-I 0-0 pitch limit of 80 and left the game was in position to be the winner if the Bulls could hold the one-run advantage But the Keys had other plans Frederick scored three runs in the seventh on five hits to take a 4-2 lead Matt Shiflett who had relieved Bark in the sixth was charged with the three runs and the loss He left with one out and the bases loaded and score tied at 2-2 Roberto DeLeon came on hits in seven innnings to pick lip the victory Jeff Williams a hard throwing former Wichita State standout came on in the eighth and struck out the side After the Keys scored a run in the ninth the Bulls made some noise in the bottom of the inning Javy Lopez led off with an infield single and scored on a triple by Tim Gillis to make it 5-3 but Williams then struck out three straight Bulls to end it Both teams had 13 strikeouts but the Keys totaled 12 hits to only five for the Bulls "That was the difference" Bulls manager Grady Little said "In between their 13 strikeouts they had 12 hits We
