point-shaving allegations at NC State University basketball games Robert Kramer HI 34 died Friday morning in Dover NJ when his BMW crashed into a telephone pole Mr Kramer had been a central figure in allegations made in a February 1990 broadcast on ABC-TV that he had paid Charles Shackleford and three other NCSU basketball players to shave points during the 1987-88 season Since then officials in New Jersey and North Carolina have been investigating those charges Recently the probe has been driven primarily by efforts of a New Jersey grand jury that has beard testimony from former NCSU players Bob Cody deputy attorney general in New Jersey said Mr Kramer's death ended prosecution efforts related to him "It would be difficult to prosecute a deceased person" said Mr Cody "We still have an ongoing investigation and beyond that I cannot comment" In North Carolina William Dowdy chief investigator for the SBI said Mr Kramer's death would have a clear impact on the investigation "It certainly would have some effect on the investigation being that he was the individual who allegedly sent money to athletes" said Mr Dowdy He said that the North Carolina investigation was essentially completed "We have been waiting for the completion of the New Jersey investigation and the results that come out of that before we make a decision as to what to do in North Carolina" The Associated
