victory over South Johnston to tie the state high school record Center fielder Heath Faircloth started the barrage with a shot over the 340-foot sign in center field Shortstop Eddie Davis poked an op- 41r posite-field il' 4 ''4 homer over the 310-foot 4-1 'i sign in right 1t and third baseman Sta' cy Bolton blasted a 360- Tx footshot to center Right STEVENS fielder Jason Hollingsworth wrapped up the homer-spree with a line drive over the right-field fence In case you're wondering the national record for the most home runs in an inning is 11 by Choctaw Okla in 1977 Four teams share second place on the national list with five The four homers in an inning ties the North Carolina record set by Dixon against Jones in 1990 GIRLS ALL-STARS: Kristin Folkl of St Louis (Mo) St Joseph scored 23 points to lead the White team to a 101-88 victory over the Red in the Kodak America Classic last Saturday in Jackson Tenn Folk' 6-2 has signed with Stanford The game has been the top girls all-star game in the country but game officials announced that Kodak which has put up $150000 per year won't sponsor the event next season VIRGINIA CHIEF: Ken Tilley a former assistant executive director of to forfeit 16 games this year and return its playoff revenue and trophies but that situation wasn't nearly as acrimonious as what occurred in1951 when Henderson appealed Sanford's use of an ineligible player after a 13-0 loss in the Eastern Regional finals at NC State's Riddick Stadium The Henderson coach had coached at Sanford and knew one of the Sanford players wasn't living with his mother The boy's father had been killed in World War II and he moved in with relatives who didn't adopt him Hap Perry the NCHSAA executive director investigated and ruled in Henderson's favor and allowed it to advance "It was horrible" said Jerry Miller a Sanford player at the time and now a well-known artist "That was more than 40 years ago and whenever we get together we still talk about it" NATIONAL MEETING: Herb Appenzeller the former athletics director of Guilford College will be among the featured speakers this summer at the National Federation of Interscholastic Coaches Association Appenzeller was a major factor in Guilford's reputation as the cradle of coaches in the state Guilford has produced many of the top prep football coaches in the state including former Northern Durham coach Kenny Browning and Millbrook coach Earl Smith Appenzetter is expected to speak on risk management issues KA GOLF: The Fellowship of Christian Athletes is sponsoring a coaches golf tournament on May 7 at the Wake Forest Country Club The team of Mike Brannan Larry Junkin Gary shows have tax numbers and must pay taxes on what they sell Most dealers usually sell items without charging tax but some still need to get with the picture Go ahead and price your goods including tax It's simpler 111 4 Dealers: practice good PR As a collector nothing turns me off more than seeing a couple of dealers sitting in their chairs sorting cards and not acknowledging your presence Don't let a person pass your table without a smile and a greeting even if it is busy If I walk by and you don't greet me I'll moving right along Also if a young collector comes by and asks about trading take the time to at least look at his stuff Even if you have no interest in trading it's not going to kill you to take a few minutes to look through an album or a small box of cards 5 Collectors: if a card looks altered in any way pass on it A few years ago a friend of mine bought an altered 1979 Pete Rose Topps card As soon as I saw it I knew it had been trimmed along the sides Unfortunately he forgot which dealer he bought it from Some dealers will try to pull a fast one so be alert 6 Collectors: ask before touching I have heard several stories of dealers having items stolen from their tables Most of these dealers do card shows full-time so selling cards is their occupation Stealing is a crime Taking money from someone's pockets is wrong Card shows are a great place to spend a day Make a point to attend when one comes to your town INVESTMENT TIP: Jeff Kent New York Mets Is this guy going crazy with the bat or what? As of Friday he was batting 406 with 8 home runs and 23 RBI He was a highly touted prospect when he was with the Blue Jays and the Mets weren't that hesitant when making the trade of David Cone for Kent and Ryan Thompson Now he's starting to show the league his talent If he improves his defense he could become another Ryne Sandberg: His rookie cards are from 1992 Best bets are Leaf and Powers and Doug Murray is the defending champion Contact Vic England at (919) 787-7211 TV SPORTS: Clayton's WYED which showed delayed telecasts of the Cary boys basketball state semifinals and finals plans to air about eight high school football games and more basketball games next year "The response has been incredible" said Ken Hinton the station's director of public relations "It was an unbelievable experience for us I though the production quality was very good We were very pleased with the entire effort" AAU BASKETBALL: Some of the state's top basketball seniors including Georgetown recruit Boubacar Aw and NC State recruit CC Harrison will play in an AAU exhibition at the Raleigh Civic Center on May 28 The Triangle Titans which won the state under-17 championship last year will play a team that is expected to have Jarod Stephenson of Fayette- ville Seventy-First (signed by Richmond) Remo Smits of Fayetteville Sanford (UNCAsheville) Ben Garrett of Fayetteville Pine Forest Terry Leonard of Southern Wayne Aw of East Columbus Jaakan Grimes of Lejeune and Reids- ville's Harrison The Titans are led by Apex's Dave Witmer (Fordham) Ayden-Grifton's Alico Dunk (Tennessee) Northern Durham's Chuck Vincent and East Carteret's Dwight Jones An AAU-sanctioned tournament will be held at the Civic Center on May 29-30 Top prospects Kevin Garnett of Mauldin SC and Ron Mercer of Nashville Tenn were expected to play but will not The Triangle Titans 17-under team will play the Boo Williams team of Norfolk the Philadelphia Flyers and the Tennessee Travellers 16- under club CAUNDAII Ill Sure it's hot but what about choices? A good card show gives collectors an opportunity to find things they can't get at their local card store It's fine to sell some of that stuff but I've passed by so many tables that duplicated each other that I thought had double vision Bring some stuff that you think no one else will like minor-league baseball cards football cards or Star International sets A table like that can generate amazing traffic 3 Dealers: incorporate sales tax into your prices practically all dealers at PeA EDE Prices Good TAhprrill1421111ki None To Dean We Resent The Right Ti Limn Quantities aright 1934 Wino-Dixie Stores Inc America's Supermarkets A Tfte Low Price I We bring the Nation and World to your door everyday! occtiA Cali Today To Subscribe: 8294700 THE NEWSSOBSERVER 6.
