Atlantic Coast Conference are slated to start the season in Durham Bulls uniforms Kowitz an outfielder from Clemson was a ninth-round pick by the Atlanta Braves last June and Bark a left-handed pitcher from NC State was a 12th-round pick Both started their professional careers last summer at Pulaski of the rookie Appalachian League Grady Little the Bulls manager said Friday in a telephone interview from Atlanta's spring training home in West Palm Beach Fla that Durham's roster probably would not be set until Monday But he said that Bark would be a starter for the Bulls and Kowitz would be his center fielder "They both started out a little slowly in camp but came on real strong at the end" Little said "Bark had his best outing of the spring yesterday Thursday striking out nine in five innings" Kowitz who was ACC player of the year in 1990 after hitting 403 for the Tigers had a 324 average in 43 games at Pulaski last summer He was called up to Class AA Greenville but hit only 132 in 20 games Bark a three-time All-ACC se- lection who set numerous offensive and pitching records for the Wolfpack in his four seasons as an outfielder and pitcher went 2-2 with a 266 ERA at Pulaski before his rookie season ended early when he was hospitalized for more than a week with a sinus infection Little also said that shortstop Mike Mordecai whose 1990 season in Durham was cut short by an ankle injury will be back for the Bulls It appears that the Bulls will have a limited number of return ing players from last year's squad that finished 71-68 overall The Braves organization will have one less minor-league team this season dropping its Class A team in Burlington Iowa As a result Atlanta has released numerous minor-league players including 1990 Bulls Theron Todd Chris Czarnik Skipper Wright and Phil Maldonado Second baseman Kevin Castleberry a fourth-round pick in the 1989 draft who bit 242 at Durham last year was optioned to the coop Miami Marlins "Under the new regime of General Manager John Schuerholz they have been more interested in keeping the best players at the spots where they are supposed to be" Little said "instead of placing players according to where they were drafted" The Carolina Mudcats Pittsburgh's affiliate in the Class AA Southern League who will playing their inaugural season in Zebulon will have some familiarity for fans who have watched Carolina League games at Durham Athletic Park in recent seasons The Mudcats roster will feature several players who played in DAP against the Bulls as mem- bers of the Carolina League's Salem Buccaneers Catcher Mandy Romero the CL's All-Star catcher after hitting 291 with 17 homers (second in the-- league) and a league-leading 90 RBI for Salem last year will be a Mudcat So will infielder Bruce Schreiber who hit 290 with 48 RBI for the Bucs and was named the Carolina League's All-Star utility infielder Other 1990 Bucs on the Mudcats' tentative roster include outfielders Chris Estep and Darwin Pennye infielder Mike Huyler and pitchers Chip Duncan Stan Fansler Pete Murphy and Tim Wakefield Pitcher Joe Ausanio who led the Carolina League in saves in 1989 with 20 and had 15 at Class AA Harrisburg last season will be the Mudcats' bullpen ace Ausa lio 25 a right-hander has a ca- ERA of 184 in three minor 2eague seasons and has struck out VO2 batters in 19023 innings BRADENTON The Pittsburgh Pirates signed Andy Van Slyke their Gold Glov cen- ter fielder to a three-year contract extension worth $1265 million Saturday making him the fourth-highest paid player in the major leagues Under the extension which takes effect in 1992 Van Slyke will get $4 million next year $46 million in 1993 and $33 million in 1994 plus a $750000 signing bonus The three-year average of $422 million puts him behind only Boston pitcher Roger Clemens ($538 million per year) New York Mets pitcher Dwight Gooden ($515 million) and Oakland outfielder Jose Canseco ($47 million) Van Slyke was eligible to file for free agency at the end of this season He is in the final year of a three-year contract that will pay him $195 million this season "The offer was fair and generous" Van Slyke said HOT SEATS: Baseball's return to the nation's capital was not without its problems The ticket lines were dreadfully long in Washington Saturday causing some fans to miss nearly half the game But if attendance at exhibition games means anything then Washington made a positive statement in its bid to get a National League expansion team in 1993 A crowd of 37458 about 11000 short of capacity paid up to $2050 per ticket to see the Boston Red Sox defeat the Baltimore Orioles 4-1 at RFK Stadium "That's a significant statement" said John Akridge the chairman of the group attempting to bring baseball back to Washington Also in contention with Wash ington for an expansion team are Miami Denver Buffalo Tampa-St Petersburg and Orlando I NO AGREEMENT: Frank Viola and the New York Mets failed to agree on a contract extension Saturday and Viola a left-hander says he is headed for free agency after the season Viola 20-12 in 1990 is looking for a deal similar to the one the Mets gave Dwight Gooden last Monday Gooden signed a three-year deal for $1545 million and he can make as much as $162 million with incentives The Meta have offered Viola $13 million for three years 1 0'7 i 1t 1 I 0 4
