Versatile guitarist Larry Hutcherson avoids pigeon-holing while indulging his love for the blues 1 I these songs were 20 years old you could call 'em classic rock I guess "I try to hit it all but blues is th area I've always leaned toward When I was learning to play the big bands were Led Zeppelin and Cream I would look at the songwriter credits on their albums and see Willie Dixon's name so I started getting more into that" The 40-year-old Hutcherson gol his start about 20 years ago in the Winston-SalemGreensboro Triad where he was on the periphery of the Mitch EasterdB's pop axis He played in the band Nightbird with drummer Ted Lyons who later went on to play with Chris Stamey While playing around the region Hutcherson got an early start on learning how to play vir- tually anything on command "It was the height of the disco era and the one thing I got out of that was I learned how to play a good rhythm guitar" he remembers "Mostly we were a rock band weekends and then we were 11 a kountry band 1 94 JAI 101 CONTINUED ON PixoN Iyou've never run across guitarist Larry Hutcherson you have only yourself to blame You just need to get out more often Monday through Friday evenings you can hear Hutcherson playing tasteful blues at the Radisson lounge in downtown Raleigh Hutcherson gives free reign to his more raucous side with his blues-rock band which ON THE BEAT you can catch Apri115 at Cup David mencord a Joe He also plays wicked slide guitar in local country-rockers the Backsliders (April 16 at the Brewery) presides over open-stage jams at the Berkeley Cafe (the next one is April 14) and fills in whatever blanks are left by playing unplugged in restaurants (hTegardless Cafe on April 17) If all that doesn't make Hutcherson the hardest-working guitar player in town it does make him one of the most versatile That isn't necessarily an t6ttitt tp dealt ing BlitIci)ilitRIttidgiM III' tastes wr 11 "It's sort of a curse actually not being specialized" Hutcherson says "Either you're not blues enough for this club or not rock enough for that one or not Lynyrd Skynyrd enough for another" Like Atlanta's Glenn Phillips or Danny Gatton in Washington DC Hutcherson is an underappreciated virtuoso But that may be changing thanks to his fine debut album "Some Get Lucky" released on his own Lab Records The album was recorded at JAG Studios with an all-star local cast that includes Dag Nantucket drummer Kenny Soule Cry of Love producer John Custer PKM bassist Pee Wee Watson and longtime Raleigh rock scene fixture Byron McCoy "Some Get Lucky" is impression that Hutcherson plays all this at least partly to prove he can But the shotgun approach works because he's a fabulous guitarist with exquisite taste tempering his solos "One problem with supporting yourself by playing is that you don't always get to do exactly what you want" Hutcherson says "Se I friedlo pptalokordif ferent things this don't know Milt you'd Call AM!
