WIMBLEDON England Jennifer Capriati so young and winsome with her hair tied in a neat French braid intimidated the toughest women's champion in Wimbledon history Fear gripped Martina Navratilova and broke down her game stroke by stroke until she seemed like an old clunker of a car falling apart The fear could be seen in the gulping breaths she took between points to steady her nerves It was in her eyes and the tight muscles of her shoulders as she served pathetically shallow balls to the boldly charging teenager and double-faulted on match point It could be heard clearly in her weak quavering voice even after they left the stadium a lingering dread that she'd been passed in time as she'd been on the The Associated Press Martina Navratilova bows out See CAPRIATI page 4C See deadlines But it's another story when you're talking about dreamers Steve Bryant is a major-league dreamer He did it He built a stadium in the middle of nowhere tit first he teased us for a couple of months He promised Five County Stadium would open on April 19 It didn't Then he said it would be May 6 It wasn't Same for May 25 Then he said it would biJune 17 It wasn't '13i1t the dream did come true on it hot Wednesday night July 3 in Zebulon It was a close call Workers scurried around until thoments before the first pitch The parking lot hours before the game was teeming with construction trucks But at a few ticks past eight they played baseball and Bryant's longtime dream came true The Carolina Mudcats drew a cr owd many with baseball in their blood some to satisfy their curiousity But they made it a full house 7333 in all The tans came early the lines snaking considerable length in the parking lot They came to see the erector-set stadium sitting cocksure on an old tobacco field Even the most famous farmer in Iowa came to see the show His name is Don Lansing and it was his farm that was immortalized in the movie "Field of Dreams" But when all was said and done it was Steve Bryant's night It was his dream to bring baselall long gone almost for some 20 years back to County He did it against long odds There was opposition Bryant wanted to hang out the play-ball sign at a site near Stadium I But Miles Wolff then the owner of the Durham Bulls invoked the rule meaning Bryant's wouldn't be playing within 135 miles of the Bulls' kingdom 0 So Bryant walked off 37 miles himself standing in the of a field a couple of swings 'from US 264 To make a long story short Bry ant persuaded the city fathers of to ante up $2 million He would put up the rest and they would build Five County Stadium 1' together always had doubts" said pausing in the midst of a harried day we never gave up on the idea We wanted to bring baseball back to Wake County and sur: rounding areas The idea struck I me four years ago and we just didn't give up" Bryant saying he had been get: ting by on just two hours' sleep the last couple of nights said the sta: dium would continue to add im- provements "This is just the first phase We want it to be a modern park but at the same time we want the fans to enjoy the charms of old-style I stadiums We hope to have 10000 0 seats eventually But we need very much to get some funding help from Wake County This is a key" But for the moment Bryant was sorting out his dream "All this hasn't really hit me yet" he said a few hours before showtime "We got through a lot 'ottps and downs "Sometimes we weren't sure we would get through it But it was worth it I think the stadium is prettier than we envisioned" The pregame ceremony was brief with Bryant and Southern 4 League president Jimmy Bragan making a few remarks They started playing Mudcat baseball at 8:09 Not everybody got a seat Too many people too few seats But never mind you can come Greenville: picked up his first Class AA: victory striking out 10 in 7V innings and combining with Bill Taylor on a four-hitter as the G-Braves topped the Mudcats 6-1 in the Five County Stadium open-A standing-room crowd of 7333 jammed the 6000-seat stadium' near Zebulon and hundreds were turned away as the fans came in force to see the first professional baseball game in Wake County since 1971 There were pregame ceremo-: nies and postgame fireworks but the drama on the field centered on Nied 23 a right-hander Nied 1-1 carried a no-hitter into the sixth when he gave up the first two Mudcats hits and surrendered an unearned run He left in the eighth after giving up three hits walking three and striking out 10 "I've been struggling to get a win but I've been pitching well since coming up" Nied said really wasn't thinking about the no-hitter "It didn't go that long and I didn't think I would finish up anyway as hot as it was" Nied 8-3 with a 156 ERA for the Durham Bulls has been even more effective in his three starts in the Southern League In 19 innings the 14th-round pick from Duncanville Texas has given up 10 hits one earned run (047 ERA) walked six and struck out 28 Taylor entered in the eighth after Nied gave up a one-out single to Darwin Pennye a hit that extended Pennye's hitting streak to 16 games and a walk to Greg Edge Taylor's first hit to Kevin Young produced a double-play grounder and the Braves were home free "He just beat us" Mudcats manager Marc Bombard said "We didn't play that well defen- sively "You'd like to win it when it's an opener But tomorrow's another day" Al Martin baptized the 24-foot outfield wall around the new park so I never got to steal on him" Sandy Jr a strapping 6 feet 5 and 215 pounds said: "It's quite an accomplishment It's
