But it's hard to imagine the market expanding further to accommodate another arena "There are only so many acts and events out there" says Cellar Door's Howard "I wouldn't tell NC State not to do it since its primary purpose will be for basketball But these buildings will have to roll up their sleeves diversify and find a different niche "If they're all just going for the same artists it won't closing after all Lease renegotiations between club owner Gene Hornick manager Tim Flaherty and building owner Leon Capetano collapsed and the club is out of money The locks had been changed by last Friday so Flaherty says he broke in to open for Beatless' musical rendition of "Passion Play" That was the Garage's last show The Garage's demise scotched a series of club benefit shows this week and such road shows as Ba-sehead scheduled for April 28 It also leaves the Triangle's alternative scene in dire straits since the Cat's Cradle in Chapel Hill is scheduled to close May 19 "This is supposedly such a great music scene but no one really supports it" says Flaherty "Peo-'ple don't go out to hear bands ex- jept for certain ones they'vcal- i ready heard about" DOUBLE-TEAM DEALS: Lots of record labels are interested in Triangle bands But none are more interested than Sony Records and Alias who have signed two Triangle bands apiece Sony has added Dig to its roster Dig Doug Jervey Nantucket's Kenny Soule and Mr Potato-head's Bobby is set to go into the studio in August with producer John Custer who writes the band's material The label's initial Triangle signing was Cry of Love whose album "Brothers" (also produced by Custer) is due out next month As for San Francisco-based Alias it recently signed a deal with Small Archers of Loaf (whose Eric Bachmann also used to play in Small ironically enough) are also on the label i I ti.
