coach Paul Westhead did not ask Hank Gathers' cardiologist to reduce Gathers' medicine a week before the basketball star died according to excerpts of Westhead's deposition 1 in a $325 million wrongful-death suit The Los Angeles Times reported Saturday that it got the excerpts from Westhead's attorney Richie Phillips Westhead's full deposition was not available because attorneys for Loyola Mary-mount wished to place restrictions on information unrelated to that issue the newspaper reported Phillips' response came a week after Bruce Fagel the attorney representing Gathers' family said that if it were not for Westhead "Hank Gathers would be alive today" Gathers collapsed March 4 during a game at Loyola and died less than two hours later The autopsy report said Gathers died of cardiomyopathy a heart disorder Pagel said last week that Westhead asked Gathers' cardiologist to reduce his level of medication which Fagel contends led to Gathers' death Westhead addresses LOS ANGEL know" Brogden a quiet unpretentious man whose raptorial eyes still flash intensity doesn't believe he had any new ideas' about basketball "I was just like everybody else" Brogden said "I asked a lot of questions and learned from lots of people I still remember going to Oxford Miss sup- posedly for a football clinic and hearing Hank Iba talk about basketball I don't think I learned anything about football that week but Coach lba helped crystalize my thoughts about basketball" Brogden began working on the continuity game while he was coaching at Wilson in the mid-1930s He returned to that style at Wilmington in the early 1950s after one of his teams lost in they state final to a bigger Raleigh club "I realized that on the high school level you were not always going to have a good big basketball player" Brogden' said "I wanted an offense where you could go recruit one of your football players or baseball players who had good size and have him play basketball "I needed an offense where the big: boys wouldn't have to be great dribblers or great shooters from the outside The offense we used emphasized catching the ball and passing the ball setting screens and rebounding Maybe we restricted them too much but it worked- pretty well" Jasper Davis who coached with Brogden for 18 years in Wilmington said the coach had the ability to break the game into simple elements "He could take a boy with no talent who could barely put one foot in front of the other carry him to the gym and drill him and turn him into an all-state player" Davis said "I've seen him do-it" Brogden is in the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame and was a charter member of the North Carolina High School Athletic Hall of Fame But perhaps the most fitting tribute to the man is the style of basketball today His legacy is reflected in gymnasiums throughout the state and the country tell se 414 1 man A sity 1 deas A Ise" Lions still sup- kring don't tball at ad to 1 they hool have gden you- Itball had Wall with Leon Brogden the former New Hanover County coach who retired from coaching in 1967 but he may still be ahead "I would say Coach Brogden was at least 20 years ahead of his time" Broughton coach Marshall Hamilton said "I really don't think we have caught up yet He was doing things in the '50s and '60s that most of us still haven't grasped" Brogden's basketball teams won state championships in 1947 '51 '56 '57 '58 '60 '61 and '62 and were runners-up in '53 '54 and '59 That's 11 state championship appearances in 16 years Coaches point to the man behind the unmatched string not the personnel "Coach Brogden would take ordinary guys and win a state championship" said Hamilton who spent hours studying with Brogden before beginning his own coaching career "He was able to do that because of his attention to detail He could come back into coaching today and be just as successful" Hamilton has good supporting evidence In 1980 when his Southern Wayne club was marching toward the state 4-A championship he called Brogden for advice about attacking zone defenses Brogden provided not only pages of basic movements for each player but also a diagram of each players' footwork including feints That sort of expertise helped Brogden dominate the state playoffs for much of his coaching career but his most lasting contribution may have been developing a 1-4 offense in the late 1940s Basketball was about 50 years old in 1940 but the modern game was in its infancy The elimination in 1938 of the center jump after each basket opened up the game and Paul Sykes' Durham High teams built national reputations with their fast-breaking style Brogden helped usher in the next big advancement a decade later Coaches generally thought of teams as having a center two forwards and two guards the lineup designations still used today Teams usually ran a play and shot But Brogden thought differently He envisioned basketball as a game with two inside players and three players who played primarily on the perimeter Instead of running one play and then another Brogden's team used a continuity offense the predecessor of today's passing games The two inside players moved from near the baseline to near the foul line depending on where the ball was The perimeter players constantly moved as they set screens cut to the basket and attacked the basket The ball was whipped around over and through the defense There were few pauses no chance for a defense to rest Basketball is most often played that way today but Brogden's style was such a departure from the conventional game that he was sought by book publishers clinics and college coaches from throughout the country "When Prentice-Hall asked me to write the book I was coaching the baseball team and just didn't have the time" Brogden said "Plus I
