"That guy had been struggling and all of a sudden it's the seventh before we get a base runner "We're looking at too many good pitches that we could hit Mitchell is by far the best hitter on this team because when he goes up there he means business He goes up there with an idea of what he wants to do" The pitching duel was not artistic The two teams combined for eight errors with the Bulls making five Durham pitchers Marcos Vazquez and Rodney Richey combined to limit the Cannons to five hits stranding 12 runners for the game Richey pitched the final three innings to pick up the win improving to 2-0 as he gave up only one hit Richey walked four but struck out six "I was just going to throw as hard as I could when I got in there" said Richey the former University of South Carolina pitcher disqualified on his first hole Sunday for hitting a ball from out of bounds By BILL WOODWARD Staff writer DURHAM Durham Bulls outfielder Keith Mitchell continues to be tough on no-hitters Against the Prince William Cannons In the seventh inning On a Sunday Mitchell who broke up a no-hitter a week ago at Prince William in the seventh inning duplicated the feat Sunday afternoon as the Bulls won 2-0 at Durham Athletic Park The Bulls won their second straight to take three of four in the series against the Cannons Durham improved to 10-8 for the season remaining three games behind front-running Kinston in the Carolina League's Southern Division Mitchell collected both of the Bulls' two hits in the afternoon contest that was interrupted by rain for 54 minutes in the middle of the second inning Last Sunday at Prince William Mitchell broke up Frank Seminara's no-hitter The Bulls lost that game the opener of a doubleheader 3-0 Ed Martel carried the Cannons' no-hitter into the seventh this time Mitchell led off the Bulls' seventh with an infield single slapping a grounder to the hole between short and third and beating the throw to first It wasn't a line drive base-hit but it gave the Bulls a leadoff base runner in the scoreless game Mitchell moved to second on a grounder by catcher Brian Deak for the inning's second out After a walk to Josman Robles Mitchell scored on an error by Cannons' shortstop Dave Silvestri who let a grounder by Todd Dewey roll through his legs into left field The Bulls got another run in the eighth off reliever Curtis Ralph who came on for the Cannons to begin the eighth Kevin Castleberry led off and reached first when the third strike got past Cannons catcher Enrique Hernandez A sacrifice moved Castleberry to second and Mitchell ripped a double down the left-filed line to drive in Castleberry and give the Bulls a 2-0 lead Martel a 21-year-old right-hander had come in to the game with an 0-2 record and a sky-high earned run average of 1500 after surrendering 22 hits and 15 hits in nine innings of combined work in his previous three outings Martel allowed only three Bulls to reach base through the first six innings issuing two walks and one reaching on an error Mixing up his pitches and getting the breaking ball over for strikes Martel had eight strikeouts as the teams headed to the seventh locked in a scoreless duel "I don't look at a pitcher's stats" Mitchell said "He might have a good day one time out and a bad one the next time out Today he had an outstanding day "He was pitching everybody away and I was looking to go to right field He pitched me inside and I had to wrap the bat around a little I was fortunate to get it on the ground and beat it out Martel who was an 11th-round pick by the New York Yankees in the June 1987 draft dropped to 0-3 But the effort was a confidence booster after his earlier starts "All I did today was concentrate inning by inning" Martel said "I kept the ball down and made some good pitches I had been trying too hard before trying to pitch too fine" Martel said he had not gotten down after the rocky start "After you have a couple of outings like that to start the season you know you've got 25 Frost ices Norman from sand Continued from page IC gates at English Turn After about five minutes a tournament committee member arrived to vouch for Norman and get him through Forst went Hearns' successful title defense left behind many questions for the only man ever to win championships in five weight classes Among the doubts after Hearns' 12-round unanimous decision Saturday over Michael Olajide is how the 31-year-old Hearns will fare in his next fight on legs that grow more unsteady with each match "Tommy's legs did look a little shaky" said Hearns' trainer Emanuel Steward "What I would like to do is take another fight real quick and then make an assessment" Hearns admitted that dropping from his natural weight of 185 pounds to defend his 168-pound super middleweight
