degree in journalism who works part-time in the offseason as a sports writer for a national wire service and has covered NHL and NBA games He leads the Bulls in one-liners and the league in earned run average Czarnik (the is silent) does an excellent Chris Berman imitation and he has dubbed many of the Bulls with nicknames similar to those given big-leaguers by the ESPN announcer Here's a sampling: Josman "Sears and" Robles Kevin "Storm the" Castleberry (after he went "over the wall" with in an early-season homer) David "Bury My Heart at Wounded" Nied Theron "My Shoes Are Un" Todd and his own tag Chris "The Deposed Russian" Czarnik "I'm a ham I guess and I amuse myself even if I don't amuse anybody else" Czarnik said then grinned "And I have been accused of amusing nobody else at times" the Braves needed a pitcher at Idaho Falls a rookie league team the scout remembered Czarnik who had just completed four years of pitching at Detroit and was graduated with a 30 grade-point average The timing was right Czarnik arrived in Salt Lake City where Idaho Falls was playing and started that night "I didn't pitch great" Czarnik said "But I stayed in the starting rotation If I had gotten there a day earlier or a day later I might have been in the bullpen "I had an average year and if I had been in the bullpen I might not have been back" Czarnik 4-5 with a 492 ERA for Idaho Falls in '88 improved last season at Burlington of the Midwest League Working mostly out of the bullpen he had a 277 ERA with four saves and a 5-4 record This season he has done a little of everything for the Bulls getting two saves and lately filling a gap in the starting rotation caused by injuries Czarnik 5-1 has been a starter in his last three outings with two straight victories before the no decision against the Spirits "I'm just happy pitching" Czarnik said "If I'm doing well enough that they keep giving me the ball then I feel like I am accomplishing something" The Bulls squaring the series at 2-2 also were potent at the plate banging out 15 hits DC Campbell who has hit safely in 15 of his last 18 games blasted a two-run homer to trigger a five-run outburst in the sixth Moments later David Brust belted a three-run shot over the same right-field wall Meanwhile Brian Champion continued on a personal tear with two more hits The big first baseman is batting nearly 400 (19-for-49) since returning from Class AA Greenville "I'm really confident at the plate more relaxed and making contact" he said By BILL WOODWARD Staff writer Call it a no-hitter with an asterisk Durham Bulls right-hander Chris Czarnik went through the scheduled seven innings in a 2 Wr04 i Carolina League game Thursday night without seen Aoli giving up a hit to 47! the Winston- Salem Spirits 6 t'4--' Although he de- kw parted after the eighth inning t't'' icy with the score 0-0 in a game the Czarnik Bulls lost 3-2 in 14 innings Czarnik will be credited with a seven-inning no-hitter That was the verdict Friday said a spokesman for Howe Sportsdata the official statistician for the minor leagues Put an asterisk beside it but Czarnik's seven innings of work in the second game of a double-header will go down as a no-bitter Czarnik pitched eight innings giving up only a two-out hit in the eighth Winston-Salem pitcher Bill Melvin a former Athens Drive High standout also had it going he surrendered one hit in the first seven innings and two for the eight innings be worked Vazquez By AJ CARR Staff writer DURHAM Forget the ninth inning Forget that Winston-Salem scored four runs in its last at-bat What the Durham Bulls want to remember about Saturday night's game is the first eight innings when they played nearly perfect baseball and laid the groundwork for a 9-4 Carolina League victory Unlike in their three previous one-run decisions with the Spirits the Bulls came out charging and parlayed pitching power and flawless defense into a one-sided treat for the 5876 Durham Athletic Park faithful Melvin a 23-year-old right-hander is 2-2 with a 389 ERA in his second season in the Carolina League The duel with Czarnik was his best outing of the season he said Friday "I've been pitching pretty well all year" Melvin said "I've been in the bullpen for about three weeks but will probably get some more starts" On Thursday Melvin walked four and struck out four as he worked eight shutout innings "I had good concentration" Melvin said "I had a real good fastball and a good changeup It was exciting to be involved in that game It's one I'll remember" WINSTON-SALEM cis bl three hits yet hung in to complete the job "1 didn't run out of gas 1 ran out of concentration" Vazquez said Manager Grady Little said: "He hasn't had that kind of command of his control but tonight
