win and lose in Regatta By DANE HUIFfMAN Staff writer Southern Wayne was a major benefactor from Flint Hill (Va) Academy's decision to deemphasize its basketball program Flint Hill had produced standouts such as Dennis Scott of Georgia Tech and George Lynch of North Carolina but the new owners decided to concentrate on football Flint Hill had been a national high school power in recent years and was scheduled to return to the King Cotton Classic basketball tournament in December in Pine Bluff Ark When Flint Hill dropped out King Cotton organizers chose Southern Wayne to fill its eighth spot The King Cotton pays all of the travel expenses of its teams and the tourney finals and semifinals usually are nationally televised The rest of the field includes defending champion Little Rock (Ark) Pineview host Pine Bluff Russellville (Ark) Canton (Ohio) McKinley Philadelphia Roman Catholic Alameda (Calif) St Joseph's of Notre Dame and Brookhaven (Miss) Southern Wayne is expected to be led by 6-foot-8 Charles Kornegay who is ranked among the to juniors in the country St Joseph's has 6-3 junior Jason Kidd whom some recruiters consider the top prospect in the class Southern Wayne also will participate in the Goldsboro News Argus Invitational December 3-5 with Goldsboro Jacksonville and Eastern Wayne BURROUGHS TRANSFERS: Thomas "Junior" Burroughs a 6-7 junior forward at West Charlotte last year is expected to join one of the country's finest high school front lines next year Burroughs is expected to transfer to Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson Va Oak Hill also expects at the shooting guard "We sound pretty awesome" said Oak Hill coach Steve Smith whose club was 29-0 last season "But we'll have to wait and see how things come together" Burroughs who is considered a top recruiting target for North Carolina among others is expected to report to Oak Hill for summer school Smith said Burroughs transferred to get into a private-school setting to strengthen his academic work He will be exposed to a national schedule Oak Hill will play in the Great Florida Shootout in Kissimmee Fla in the Fort Worth Texas event in the Blue Chip Classic in Cincinnati and in the Altoona Pa tournament West Charlotte had signed to play in the Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach SC Flint Hill coach Stu Vetters lost Alexander to Oak Hill but carried most of his Flint Hill team to Harker's Academy in Maryland Among his top players is 7-2 Serge Zweiller a native of The Richard Briggs drove "Scarlet Thunder" to a win in the 1-Litre Stock class and Norman Brewington of Chapel Hill saw Ken Germershausen direct his "Red White and Brew" boat to a title in the Jersey Speed Skiff division Both Briggs and Germershausen ironically are from Pasadena Md Also Bobby Murray Jr of Raleigh took second in the 1-Litre Modified race Tar Heel Regatta Sunday's results (Driver boat) 1-Litre Stock 1 Richard Briggs "Scarlet Thunder'12 John Lotter "Bounty Hunter" 3 Bruce Densten "Dubble Central Rocky Mountain is an NAIA school and rarely recruits in the Eastern part of the country "John Jordan who coaches at- Cardinal Gibbons is a good friend of mine and he gave me some names that I wanted to follow up on" Malby said -It worked out pretty well" Lane a 6-3 swing player aver- aged 214 points and 12 rebounds for Chatham Central have gotten the trophy but they know who was the fastest" The Weavers weren't the only racers with brothers on their minds Boat owner Larry Lauterbach of Norfolk Va watched as his driver Doug Masengale of Maryland suffered a boat-wrecking spill in the 25-Litre Modified race Masengale was taken away in an ambulance and Lauterbach said he believed the driver had a broken leg but would be OK Lauterbach's boat the "Gemini" had much of the wood on its hull torn away The "Gemini" uses the same engine that Lauterbach's brother Hank used when he tried to set a world speed 'record in 1988 Hank Lauterbach crashed and was killed and the "Gemini" carries a circle with "Remember Hank" in black print Despite the accidents Lauterbach 43 isn't about to give up on power boat racing "I've had some bad accidents myself" he said as he took a wrench to his boat "It's racing part of the game We don't enjoy that part I've raced for 26 years and only had three flips Only three 'downs' There've been lots of 'ups' It's a great sport" Two other area boat owners watched their boats speed to victory Sunday James Richardson of Knightdale watched as 22 years ago "People are all the time saying' 'Why don't you win The truth is this is a tough race to win" Tommy Weaver said In fact the Regatta has become highly popular with racers and serves as the Eastern Divisional Championships And it doesn't help Tommy Weaver that he is always helping to organize the event while other drivers are tinkering with their boats He was in good position at the start Sunday- though going over the line a hair too soon Weaver was in Lane 1 and heading toward the line when he saw four boats to his left speed forward If Weaver held back those boats would cut in front at the start and douse him with water possibly shutting down his engine And if he sped up he might cross the line early Weaver's best gamble was to go forward His boat named "Bingo" was as powerful as any in the field but the start cost him his first Regatta triumph "I may be crying over this: I'm getting too old to run" Tommy Weaver said But at least the strong race was some consolation "People here know who was the fastest" he said "I might not Raleigh's Bobby Weaver won his race in Sunday's Tar Heel Regatta and really wished he hadn't That's because his brother Tommy also of Raleigh actually finished first in the 25 Formula Cobra finals at Lake Wheeler Finals were held in nine power boat classes on Sunday's second and final day of the Regatta But Tommy Weaver had crossed the starting line too soon He went on to finish first and Bobby second but Tommy Weaver and four other boats that jumped the gun were assessed a one-minute penalty So Tommy Weaver was officially seventh "I hate it for Tommy" said Bobby Weaver 39 "Even though he got disqualified the boat ran great Ile crossed the line first" Bobby Weaver has won in the Tar Heel Regatta before He won it two years ago in fact and finished first last year only to be disqualified This year it was time for Tommy Weaver 56 to win and then lose What was particularly disappointing for Tommy Weaver was that he had never won in the Tar Heel Regatta an event he started 1-Litre Modified 1 Charley Wiggins "Super J2" 2 Bobby Murray Jr JOEL CHANEY Staff writer WAKE FOREST RECRUIT: Deacon basketball coach Dave at Ole Miss In 1986 his senior year he led the SEC with 13 saves but that didn't impress the people who count That summer he attended seven tryout camps put his second-to-none slider past every bat but was told rosters were filled check back A friend in Class AA ball who had failed to make the Ole Miss varsity told him to contact Rod Gilbreath assistant director of scouting for the Braves Gilbreath scheduled a September tryout but that was canceled In February 1987 Gilbreath saw Wright pitch at a tryout camp in Laurel Miss and signed him He had just turned a ripe-for-baseball 23 and here he was embarking on a trip that so far has been paved with sliders smarts and success Wright now in his tourth year of pro ball has made few mistakes as a late-inning relief specialist That's good because at his age he can't afford mistakes Like the one he threw in his very first outing this year at Durham Athletic Park He entered the game with the bases loaded against Kinston and cleared them with one pitch Debuting by serving a grand slam is not the direct ticket to the bigs Every time he takes the mound his career is in jeopardy Time is not on his side Exterior Building Cleaning Saulking Waterproofing Commercial Window Washing win gou 4 REMTIMAJp919)p7 pitcher every year all year A lot of players have a good two-thirds and a bad one-third of a season but every year I have had good whole seasons "I'm out there throwing all the time I'm doing what I do from day one to the last day of the season" His yearly performances back him up: 348 ERA and 13 saves at Idaho Falls (Rookie League) in 1987 24 saves 195 ERA and Rolaids Relief Award at Sumter (low A) in 1988: 13 saves 201 ERA at Burlington Iowa (middle A) last year Wright who got married last September said he will pitch as long as he is making progress toward the majors "I want to be in Class AA before this season is over" he said "I thought I would be in AA this year but things didn't work out Still it was a move up "My timetable it's hard to set one when you love the game as much as I do Mine is going to be based on when I stop moving up "When I've hit a wall or I've gone as far as I can go if my abilities can't carry me to the next level or I can't prove to someone I don't deserve to be there then I'll know it's time to hang my cleats up" Although he's 26 Bulls' teammates don't call him "Pops" But they do call him "Old Ripley" It seems that Wright tells some tales that his teammates find hard to believe Like his grandfather back in Mississippi using a snake for a whip and popping his head off Or catching catfish by sticking your fist in a catfish hole and when it bites you you grab it "That's country that's just country stuff but these city guys don't believe it" Wright said "They say 'Old Ripley is at it again' But imagine what they'll be saying if Wright makes it to the bigs "Hey Old Ripley is in The Show Believe it or not" 0111) NA" fL Here it is in the early innings of those first simmering days of June and Skipper Wright is walking on thin ice Wright is a relief pitcher for the Durham Bulls an I 8 i Atlanta number he can't control is the one that circles about his career like a vulture The number 26 As in candles on a cake To be a 26-year-old relief pitcher in Class A ball doesn't exactly smack of living it up in the Fat Lands To most 26ers in Class A threads it's time to put away the dream and wake up to the stone-hard facts of reality Mainstream USA traffic Jams and 9 to 5 to 65 That's Wright's case but he's dealing with it And successfully In the latest Carolina League stats Wright's 138 ERA is third-best in the league That means Wright 2-2 with four saves is tighter than Scrooge when it comes to handing out runs Wright's job description is simple: arrive late to the mound say around the seventh inning and stay there until the game is over while not allowing the opponent a run To shorten a long story Wright was overlooked by scouts during his four years If You're Thinking About Portable Laptop Computers BUSINESS SYSTEMS The Triangle's Leading TOSHIBA Dealer TOSHIBA 872-4919 Call us
