Another slider of course The first one was a razor job nicking the outside corner The next one broke to the inside jamming Orsag as he swung and missed The next pitch missed the outside corner but not Jr is all smiles after winning Indy-car race in Wisconsin as tuns By JOEL CHANEY Statt writer DURHAM The Durham Bulls got the max out of the minimum Sunday afternoon in Durham Athletic Park to defeat the Kinston Indians 3-1 The Bulls made a shoestring budget worth of hits five hold up for nine innings to beat the Carolina League Southern Division leaders The win snipped Kinston's lead to five games over the third-place Bulls Four of the five hits were doubles and the Bulls received some unexpected help when Kinston right fielder Eddie Zambrano lost the ball in the sun in the third inning and Durham's third run scored Durham scored all the runs it would need to win in the fit inning on David Brust's two-out two-run bases-loaded double Kinston pitcher Ty Kovach 7-2 contributed to his own downfall by walking two batters and hitting one to load the bases Then Brust slapped a line drive down the right-field line scoring Mike Mordecai and Josman Robles "The hit by Brust in the first inning was awful big" Durham manager Grady Little said "That was just about all we needed But against a club like Kinston more days than not that's not going to be enough "I thought their pitcher came back and pitched a heck of a game after that first inning He showed why he's one of the winningest in the league" From there the Bulls turned things over to starting pitcher Lee Johnson and long relief man Skipper Wright Johnson allowed the Indians five hits and one run in six innings while Wright yielded but two hits and no runs while striking out six Wright entered the game in the top of the seventh with a 3-1 lead in his hip pocket and a hard-to-hit slider in his repertoire of pitches Wright playing up to his name' sailed through the seventh and eighth without difficulty But in the top of the ninth a couple of yard-sale hits gave the crowd of 2991 some anxious moments With runners at first and second and no outs Wright reached into his bag of pitches chose the slider and just like that one two three strikeouts the game was over Kinston's Brian Johnson went 19' OMAHA Neb John Cohen Tommy Raffo and Jon Shave each had two hits and two RBI during a record 11-run first inning that carried Mississippi State to a 15-1 victory over Georgia Southern in an elimination-round game in the College World Series on Sunday Cohen drove in the first two runs of the game with a double and after a single by Raffo) scored on the first of Shave's two doubles Cohen singled his second time up Raffo followed with a two-run single to make it 10-0 and Shave doubled again to drive in Cohen The 11 runs established a record for a first inning in the College World Series and tied the mark for most runs in any inning Notre Dame scored 10 in the first against Northern Colorado in 1957 and Texas did the same against Seton Hall in 1975 California in 1947 against Yale Seton Hall in 1964 against Texas and Stanford in 1982 against South Carolina also scored 41 times in an inning The winners led all but 14 of the 129 laps around the 225-mile course and averaged 103455 mph They earned $40000 after beating teammates Chip Robinson of Old wick NJ and Bob Earl of Larkspur Calif by 15617 second-generation Indycar stars in Sunday's Miller 200 saw the leader slow and roll toward the pit road with less than two laps remaining Andretti just over one mile from his first victory in 10 months heard the Chevrolet engine on his streaking Lola sputter and die out of fuel "I didn't have any indication or clue that Michael was having any problems" Unser said "We were running our race "I knew that I was cutting it close on fuel" he added "I was hoping that as fast as Michael was going he was using the fuel along with the speed And sure enough he was" The bitterly disappointed Andretti said "The last 100 laps I was just trying to save fuel I just can't believe it This really hurts it's always something stupid that costs us "It's a real shame because the car was so good To save fuel I was going one and a half seconds slower Eon each lap than I could have gone I don't know what else to say" Unser trailed Andretti by just over 5 seconds as the leaders drove the 199th lap on the one-mile Wisconsin State Fair Park oval When Andretti slowed and pitted Unser's Chevrolet-powered Lola darted past and into the lead on the main straightaway Andretti pounded his steering wheel in frustration as his crew poured in enough fuel to allow him to finish the 200-mile race Meanwhile Unser easily held off two-time defending race champion Rick Mears for his 10th career victory and first triumph on an oval track beating him to the finish line by 073 Seconds He won $87632 "1 could not have been luckier than I was today" said Unser i Stock cars 'virtually standard' Continued from page 1D are many and their products are highly sophisticated There is little in STOCK car racing that is as it once was Matthews said in a recent interview especially the cars themselves No no dear Jim Bob that is not really a Thunderbird on whose wings Awesome Bill rides But it sure looks the part Same goes for Dale Ironhead's Chevy Geoff Conehead's Ford and Rusty Rubber-head's Pontiac They all make a good impression on the crowds but they're just a reasonable facsimile thereof "The roof panel of a Winston Cup race car is virtually a standard production item" said Matthews who indicated that there may be exceptions and probably are because that's the nature of NASCAR racing the only thing for sure is that nothing is for sure "I've learned over the years" he said "to be evasive that's why I say things like 'virtually' standard" And except for that virtually standard roof skin and that virtually standard rear deck or trunk lid just about everything else on a stock car isn't Wheels aren't engines aren't seats aren't The closest thing to stock in fact may be the cigarette lighter in driver Dick Trickle's Pontiac and that took a special order and some special wiring Not even the windshields would fit into a showroom car Ford only recently solved a windshield dilemma Several inches of all windshields had to be cut across the bottom to afford clearance for air intake by the engine through a cowl at the base of the windshield And almost every time the glass was cut the windshield broke "They broke" Matthews said "because of modern technology Windshields used to be big and heavy plate glass But today because of lighter-weight cars the windshields are thinner and lighter They started safety-laminating windshields and now they're tnade so they come apart chip into little bits so they don't hurt you as much when you hit them The problem in racing was when they tried to cut a part of the windshield off it chipped But it was supposed to come apart" NI (re I 11 -1- I r' I
