Therefore, according to this view, man should now admit the other African apes, the gorilla and the chimpanzee, to the separate family he assigned to himself in classifying living things. Man's family is Hominidae. The gorilla and the chimpanzee) now belong to the family Pong- idae. If there are reassignments Hominidae would no longer be unique and only the orang-utan and the gibbon, which are Asia tic apes, would be left in Pongi- dae. The scientific evidence backing this view stems largely from studies of the proteins ofj blood serum. These are under "genetic control," that is theirl chemical natures are dictated' by the genes of heredity. The serum proteins of dissimilar creatures cannot be alike or even similar. These studies show that the serum proteins of man, gorilla and chimpan2ee are similar but those of the orang-utan and the gibbon are decidedly different. Not only do they differ from the man - gorilla-chimpanzee pro- teints — they differ from each other. AU this formed the view of the editors of the fechm 'cBl journal. The Lancet, which has high prestige in the world of science. Common Ape Ancestor It makes complete scientific sense to assume man and all the apes acquired their original serum proteins from a comiaon ape ancestor. But the new evidence, as the editors interpreted it, shows man "to have been one with the gorilla and chim- anree long after the orang-^ utan, and still more the gibbon,] had diverged." It's true that in structure and function, man evolved "far and fast" in comparison with the chimp and the gorilla. Nevertheless these apes are "close" to him and in terms of common ancestry, man chimp and goril la are "appro>dmately equidis tang from each other." Other new evidence comes from science's new ability to count and study the chromo-, somes in cells. These bear the genes of heredity and so are vi tal in any argument over an cestry. The editors said that superficially this evidence seems to contradict the serum-proteiu evidence. Man has 48 of them but the gorilla, chimp and orang-utan all have 48. One species of gibbon has 50 but four species have 44. Not too much weight should be given to that, they argued. Healthy human beings with only 45 chromosomes are being found at an increasing rate. Reduction In Numbers And there is evidence that evolution has produced much reciprocal translocations among chromosomes that have the effect of reducing their numbers. In spite of the numerical differences, the chromosomes of gorilla, chimpanzee and man are much alike but those of the orang-utan differ widely, and those of the gibbon differ more widely still and suggest a relationship with the old-world monkeys," the editors said. Man classed himself as a unique family out of "understandable egotism." It can be justified by the evolutionary "adaptation of the lower Lmbs to bi- pedalism, in adaptation of the upper limbs first to tool and weapon using and later to took- making, in reduction of jaws and teeth, and most recently in increase in brain size." But just the same, "man appears from his serum-proteins to be an African ape." Thurs., Apr, Uth 7 p.m. to llp,m. Howtifowtt ffedlands Real fwo-Legged Values for Every Man Who Wears Panfs! This doesn't mean that the department is unhappy with its campaign to get zip code num bers into general use. Actually, Postmaster General John A. Gronouski said Sunday, public acceptance of the system in its first nine months has "exceeded our fondest expectations." But reminders will be mailed next week under a plan to send out notices every six months until the zip code becomes an accepted part of everyone's mailing address.
