I 00qr 2B The News and Observer Raleigh NC Friday August 26 1988 A The old speed lives in UNC's revitalized Born By CHIP ALEXANDER Staff writer everything went well in the spring and I've felt great in (preseason practice" In Wednesday's night scrimmage at Kenan Dorn was close to his tantalizing best He had 71 yards in just II carries gracefully pirouetting at near full speed spinning slipping tackles weaving his way to big gainers Dorn has come back 10 pounds heavier than in '87- he said without sacrificing any of his 44 speed And at 200 pounds he added he won't be trying to avoid any defender he finds in his path "Now" he said "I get to put my head down and take some people on" Brown won't demand that macho work from Dorn of course He'll leave that kind of brutish running to fullback James Thompson What the UNC coach will ask of Dorn is that he frequently line up in the slot'' rather than his accustomed spot as the I back and give the defense more looks more to worry about "Torin's what I call a quiet type of runner" Brown said "He's the type you have to be patient with and not expect to get four yards every run He looks like he's not doing anything then Brown smiled Forty yards? Fifty? Brown didn't say He'll leave that to your imagination percent the rest of the season 'It's strange but my season high and season low came in the same game And it would hurt me as much mentally as it did physically We were playing Oklahoma the next week and I was really hyped for the game Then I didn't even make the trip "That's the worst kind of frustration the desire to play and not being able to" But Dorn wasn't sidelined the rest of the year He played and he played as hard and as best he could lining up against Georgia Tech and Auburn Clemson Virginia and Duke "But I was playing at 70 percent at best" he said "All I could do was run straight ahead and I was not very effective "But we had some injuries had some running) backs go down I think of myself as a role player and I stepped in and did the best I could I just couldn't make it back all the way" But Dorn refused to dwell on the travails of '87 on the bummer of an ailing ankle on a career so often brought to a standstill or on a season gone awry for the Tar Heels "There was so much chaos last year" he said "The best thing is to forget it to try and overcome it "It's a new beginning for Carolina football in 1988 And I'd like to think it's a new beginning for Torin Dorn" Dorn likes to visualize a season where he does his job game after game for 11 weeks Carry the ball get the yards score the touchdowns and help Mack Brown to a successful debut as head coach And of course to finally deliver to finally give the Carolina faithful all that has been expected of him since Dorn was recruited out of Southfield Mich a Parade All-America and member of the Blue Chip Dream Team who had 1200 yards rushing and 16 touchdowns in just 612 games as a prep senior Thus far Dorn has been more of a tease his days in Carolina blue filled with mere flashes of brilliance with open-field runs that fueled imaginations and then broke hearts when he stood by idly on the sideline In his first two years at Carolina Dorn played in only 12 games He started only two But he is described in UNC's 1988 media brochure as "the premier running back in the Atlantic Coast Conference" Premier back? Dorn has 620 career yards He has All-America style but where is the substance to proclaim such greatness? Dorn certainry doesn't talk in those terms He talks more of just trying to win the starting position at tailback not of 1000-yard totals "I'm just praying I can go through a year injury-free" Dorn said "Only time will tell But CHAPEL HILL Torin Dorn was in the clear running like the wind Forty yards Fifty Sixty He had the goal line in sight Kenan Stadium in bedlam Then came a jarring back-side tackle Thus was a football season blindsided For Dorn now a junior tailback at the University of North Carolina the 187 season would be one of agony the agony of not being fully healthy of not being at his best Of not being able to do his part as the Tar Heels stumbled to a 5-6 record There was the pain of being called an enigma in cleats Or as one Carolina fan put it soon to be called "The Greatest Running Back There Never Was" UNC then coached by Dick Crum never fully revealed the seriousness of the ankle injury Dorn suffered in the season-opener against Illinois that rainy day last September Dorn was smacked to the Kenan turf after a 69-yard run late in the game He limped out after collecting 165 yards and later the injury was termed a "bad sprain" But it was more than just a sprain "I pulled the ligament on the outside of the ankle and it was swollen halfway up to the knee" Dorn said in an interview this week "I was never at 100 I lue Devils face scrimmage test 1P 4 i- season-opener at South Carolina may not be made until late next week but ever so slowly some other starting choices are being made by Coach Mack Brown and his staff Brown said Thursday that Pat Crowley has moved back into the- starting lineup at strong guard and that Jonathan Hall and Deems May are bracketed together in the No 1 quarterback spot Crowley an All-ACC selection last fall was moved up on the depth chart following a scrim- mage on Wednesday Dennis Clemons dropped to No 2 Brown also said that freshman Hamp Greene of Montgomery Ala had won the field-goal and PAT kicking job any serious injuries to any key personnel so far "We have a lot of experience on offense but our defense will be very young We will probably start one freshman cornerback Wyatt Smith and another one who lives in Oakland Cailf was in the New York area to appear at a baseball card show Goodstein said he talked to Steinbrenner on Monday concerning Jackson's return adding that the Yankees were considering the possibility Jackson left the Yankees for the California Angels in 1981 after New York declined to re-sign him Later Steinbrenner said one of his biggest errors as owner of the club was letting Jackson get away Since Jackson's departure the Yankees have not won a title of any kind Jackson began his major league career in 1967 with Kansas City When the Athletics moved to Oakland he helped them to world championships in 1972 1973 and 1974 In the decisive sixth game of the 1977 World Series against Los Angeles Jackson hit three home runs at Yankee Stadium to give New York the title During his years with the Yankees Jackson had his controversial moments with Steinbrenner and Manager Billy Martin He nearly came to blows with Martin on one occasion during game a Fenway Park Jackson who hit IS homers for the Athletics last season holds an honorary title as Oakland's assistant to the president but is not bound to the club Broughton hopes to begin a drive that leads to the state playoffs tonight at 7:30 when it hosts strong Lee County at Greg-son Stadium The Caps narrowly missed winning a berth last year when they tied Athens Drive and Millbrook for second place in the Capital Nine 4-A Conference but they lost to Millbrook in a drawing "The right name just was not pulled at least from our perspective" said Broughton Coach Henry Trevathan "But the kids are taking that as a sort of motivation for this year They want to make sure that it doesn't come down to a drawing again" The Caps have an experienced defense led by All-Triangle linebacker Pat Clougherty (200 pounds) and running mate Eddie Ransdell (206) Up front Broughton returns Roderick Williams (270) Chris Butler (282) and Daryl Head (185) Safety Matt Currin also is back The offensive line has been rebuilt and the offense may be quicker than a year ago Much of the new speed is represented by runners Anthony Avery Darrell Walker Dolby and veteran Wayne Bragg Clayton returns at fullback The quarterback of the Caps' Wishbone is shared by Wes Andrews and Chris "They both have ability but right now we are working on getting the right reads" Trevathan said "We know that Lee County is going to be a tough test for a lot of our young people" Lee County lost its entire offensive unit including 1300-yard rusher Roger Brown from a club that finished 10-2 and tied Richmond County for the Southeastern 4-A Conference title The Jackets do return defensive standouts Marcus Haywood (linebacker 214) Allen Davis (safety 200) and Jeff Cooke (end 200) In a big game among Triangle independents Wake Christian is at Ravenscroft Former Ravenscroft coach Ted Stefanou will be honored Ten years ago Stefanou's Ravens won their first state football title About half of the state's 330 North Carolina High School Athletic Association football teams are playing tonight The rest of the state's teams will open next week The Associated Press NEW YORK The agent for Reggie Jackson said Thursday night he has held discussions with New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner about Jackson's possible return to the club as a player Jackson 42 retired after spending the 1987 season with the Oakland Athletics Jackson has 563 career home runs sixth on the all-time list Jackson played for the Yankees from 1977 until 1981 and helped New York win three American League pennants and two World Series titles Bill Goodstein Jackson's agent approached Steinbrenner earlier this week According to Goodstein Jackson would return for the final month of the season and would make about $100000 with possible gate incentives "I have not been formally told this by our people" Yankees media director Harvey Greene said by telephone from Anaheim Calif "Bill Goodstein is a friend of the organization" "Yes we have made some inquiries" Goodstein said "We think the Yankees could use Reggie's winning attitude and his experience in the tough pennant races He may also be able to bring back some of the glory of past championship Yankee teams" Goodstein who is also the agent for Yankees reliever Dave Righetti said he discussed the idea with 'TIM STEVENS 1 0 1'.
