routine Kinston victory turned into a frantic finish Sunday night at Durham Athletic Park as the Indians 6-0 in the Carolina League's second half survived ninth-inning home runs by Ken Pennington and Sean Ross and four Durham runs for a 7-6 victory over the Bulls Kinston had a 7-0 lead behind Tommy Kramer now 9-4 before the Bulls scored twice in the sixth and four times in their last at-bat as a crowd of 4960 sensed a comeback victory Reliever Rick Surhoff boasting a league-leading 14 saves had all kinds of trouble retiring the Bulls in the ninth Surhoff replaced Kramer after a single to center by Theron Todd a homer over the left-field fence by Pennington and a homer far over the right-field fence and onto the roof of a building by Ross Surhoff older brother of Milwaukee catcher BJ Surhoff walked Brian Deak Then pinch-hitter Mike Fowler hit a pop fly single to center and Al Martin followed with a looping single to left that loaded the bases with none out and the Bulls trailing 7-5 Then came an unusual play David Butts grounded back to Surhoff whose throw to the plate was high allowing Deak to score The relay to first retired Butts but what could have been an easy double play went by the boards Catcher Brian Johnson argued the call at the plate by umpire Dave Wilk and immediately was ejected After Andy Tomberlin was walked intentionally Brian Walloch 2 Montreal 2
