1 6D 'g The News and Observer Raleigh NC Wednesday August 23 1989 What's in store for WPTF-TV? Some TvD and ABC nosed out RAL and CBS NBC on PTF was a fairly close third in both surveys Ron Wood art for sale here Sept 1 1 i il Triangle airwaves t' By Bob Langford Triangle airwaves By Bob Langford The new owners will almost certainly give the station a stronger news presence than it has now While it will probably never win in the ratings a respectable news operation could bolster the station's image and make it some money (The first thing the new owners ought to do is knock off those self-serving gratuitous announcements about the station's "rapid growth" that Terry Thi 11 had to read Monday night) One more thing Durham Life's two radio stations WPTF-AM and WQDR-FM will only get better once the TV station isn't there to draw off resources talent and energy "We smushed 'em" was how general manager Linda Cochran put it LFL's "Arsenio Hall Show" also took viewers away from WRALTV and WTVD at II pm It got 14 percent of the audience about half as much as each of the two news shows It did especially well with young men "We don't just compete against RAL anymore" says WTVD news director Dave Davis "We're competing against Arsenio and cable" RAL won at 11 o'clock in the 23-county market but TVD won in the metro area (Nielsen and Arbitron ratings covered most of July) As hard as it must be for Andy-philes to accept WRAL's "Punky Brewster and "Small Wonder" got a bigger audience than the old "Andy Griffith Hour" did Sure it was mostly kids but the larger audience gave the station a better lead-in for "Cosby" at 5 who more than held his own against Judge Wapner That gave RAL an advantage at its 5:30 and 6 o'clock newscasts RAL nosed out VVTVD in Arbitron and Nielsen ratings for the entire market in both newscasts In the metro area TVD won both according to Arbitron and tied in Nielsen "We're very satisfied" says RAL station manager Paul Quinn WPTF's "Newsbeat 28" was a very distant third (Yes WLFL's "Silver Spoons" beat it again) Overall WTVD was the most watched station in the Triangle and in the market' according to both ratings Nielsen said TVD and RAL were even in prime time Arbitron said Now that WPTF-TV is for sale the question is: Who would want it? Alter all for a dozen years Durham Life Broadcasting has done nothing but poor-mouth Channel 28 "Yie're only a UHF how can we compete?" "The NBC affiliates in Greenville- and Wilmington steal our "Walter Cronkite could do the here and not make a dent" It's sort of like taking potential buyers through your house and Jelling them that the stove is broken the plumbing is shot and the roof leaks (And for the $45 price tag Durham Life -vice president Bob Butler has put on the station you'd think it would be pretty much But the station will not want for buyers An NBC affiliate in a top-50 (we'll be No 33 when the ankings are compiled in a few is a hot property accordng to media brokers So what will happen when the station gets sold presumably to a broadcaster? A few predic' tions: The call letters will change No one wants to be saddled with 1VPTF's third-place image and the connection to the radio station The new owners will be here to a TV station and that's enough without an insurance company's logo to live with (Be sides any station that runs can't be all that worried 'about protecting the family) Also the radio station pulls in older audience (more like CBS's) instead of younger NBC viewers a There will be a big promo 'Consumers cotton to cotton Continued from page 1 of a butterfly's wing "I believe all good designs come from nature" says Bonny Mendenhall Calloway designer for decorative fabrics Ms Calloway keeps a collection of rocks and butterfly wings near her work area along with fabric samples that she shows to US and European mills The fabric designs she creates may eventually end up as bedspreads throws for the sofa big with this whole couch-potato sheets towels or other home furnishings The designers work closely with Cotton Inc's fashion-marketing office at world headquarters in New York These people are trend forecasters traveling the world to determine what the next "big colors" and silhouettes will be 18 months before they hit the retail market (Hint: Look for mint green in sheets and China blue in upholstery in 1991 turquoise and coral in fashions for the coming spring) Indeed what goes on in the Raleigh operation has far-reaching effects Is outer space far enough for you? "There's never been an astronaut in the shuttle that hasn't worn 100 percent cotton" boasts Hal Brockmann Cotton Inc's senior vice president of research "It's the only fabric that will pass NASA requirements" Mr Brockmann explains that NASA came to Cotton Inc in 1973 and asked them to develop a Although the station Is on the block WPTF-TV's Fall Premiere Party is still on for tonight Once as common in TV as the national anthem at sign-off the last fall premiere in this market was held three years ago by PTF The party for 900 at the North Raleigh Hilton will be used to tell advertisers what's coming this fall Of course the impending sale will also be on the agenda "I plan to discuss the announcement" says Mr Butler The ratings which came out Monday won't make WPTF any easier to sell The station tied with Foxindependent WLFL Channel 22 in overall viewers Only NBC's prime-time lineup saved PTF from finishing fourth It narrowly beat LFL in the metro area (the Triangle plus Franklin County) LFL ad salespeople are ready to hit the streets armed with a new slogan: "The Fox eats the peacock" Angeles Dallas London Osaka Singapore and the world headquarters in New York He lists some of Cotton Inc's achievements over its 19-year history including some of the first testing on stonewashing denim the development of a cottonwool blend that feels like wool but can be thrown into the washer and dryer and creation of an affordable alternative to Ultrasuede And now Cotton Inc's diligence seems to be paying off A Gallup survey appearing in the August issue of Apparel Merchandising II Flavor Forecast Flavor of the Day Chocolate Chip RALEIGH NOW IN CARY Next to Stein Mart Next to Mazzlo Spring Forest at Atlantic 1146 Kildaire Farm 8788159 467-2386 GOODBERRY'S FROZEN CUSTARD qvirkgafrill" magazine says cotton is the most preferred fabric among women But the single thing executives at Cotton Inc like to brag about most concerns the competition Because at 49 percent of market share cotton has now become the most popular fiber consumed at retail outselling all synthetic fibers combined WPI1F-AM's Donna Mason has gotten a few complaints about the ad campaign for her morning talk show "Call Girl on Radio" No one has called or written to say that the obvious prostitute reference is in bad taste Instead they've complained that no woman over 18 should allow herself to be called a girl Her response to the silliness? "If we'd said 'call woman on radio' we would have needed a drop-leaf billboard" Miss Mason by the way auditioned at WRAL-TV earlier this month for a possible television version of her show RAL is thinking about launching a talk show and has been looking at potential hosts but doesn't have any firm plans just yet QUICK CUTS: WTVD's "Rock-in' From Raleigh to Russia" a half-hour show of George Mallet's trip to the Soviet Union with the Make a Difference Foundation will air Saturday at 2 pm Jim Valvano host of "The Lighter Side of Sports" on ESPN and local basketball coach is the subject of a mini-profile in the new and not-so-improved TV Guide this week National Public Radio law correspondent Nina Totenberg will speak at 2 pm Thursday at the Sir Walter Hotel on Fayetteville Street Mal Her appearance at the $100-a-plate luncheon will benefit WUNC-FM's capital campaign "WY" $1531 IILL 10 required 772-6894 whin 1 rated 11 TRYON HILLS SHOPPING CTR 'novae 3rd 1110 WEEK! That's what we're working on "We are driven" he says leaning over his chair in the research center's board room "by how many products we can get on the market RIGHT NOW!" Mr Brockmann has to be driven His organization is the brain of the cotton industry The Raleigh location which includes the research center and a dying and finishing facility on Neil Street employs 70 about half of Cotton Inc's total employees In addition to Raleigh there are offices in Greenville SC Los VIAL I CRUM IIIIAS Onomumma-': mmusronaoleinumamonnom 1NOWISHOWING II 64 66 1K14 CHECK LOCAL THEATRE LISTING FOR SHOW TIMES CINEPLEX 00E001 MINER MERCHANT'S'S 834-0164 6 1 CINEPLEX ODEON OBWAVERLY PLACE Ott' 851-9113 0 S3 SHOWS STARTING BEFORE 6 PP61 411 SENIOR CITIZENS ALL SHOWS A- MISSION VALLEY1111 2109 AVENT FERRY RC 834-9620 WHEN HARRY MET SALLY au THEABYSS-EJ BATMAN-Ipm4 PARENTHOOD aag INDIANA JONES IMPERIAUCINEMAS 700 MAYNARD RD 467-00094 LET IT RIDE LETHAL WEAPON 2 FIELD OF DREAMS 7:20 ONLY LOCKUP-ti 9:35 ONLY NIGHTMARE ON ELM ST PART -E OP BOWL MOONLITE Every Weekend Fri Sat am Check in Time 10:30 pm "Bring the gang bowling" IYESTERN LANES 2512 Hillsborough St 0 832 Atte11LuryG pr-Irr 40' 41 7 "W4 nb41 17S CINEPLEX ip I 4- 7rat 41 0:71:: wl: 11 6 441'C" ONEPLEX ODEON SILEHLET1E THE i 1itCARDINALIMP ILIOWER MERCHANT'S SI 834-01 64 MOTOR LODGE Atlantic Beach NC Coffee Shop All Rooms Oceanfront Pool HBO Free local Calls MCNISA Refrigerator in all rooms TELEPHONE 726-4146 or Toll Free 1-800-682-6898 7819565 4104140 MOTOR Mil RESTALIRRIIT EMER MOTOR Mil RESTPURRIIT EMERALD 3533 YOU'VE IlirlyrfnIMIErtne I pG-13142 tl IS Wa 1 aiSOi rt 2109 haw kyn flool 834-8520 ODEON If 014 (Mt IliNAVEALY PtAaa Kkawe koo es 37 3 mriErt 11161E 1PG-131(301 nil NISSEN Wart One 2109 Anal comilko 834-8520 14 olt tint 0 es Kkrutve 37 3 "'Jefferson mL0D-roER ISLE NC II UN Jilt WATEHMONT MOREHEAD CITY NC 0 kii isoaZtab ii-Z -i' 45 night (weekends) 200week I I DDE -A0 110 (Call us about lower weekday rates) ii lii MICKEY MOUSE CARTOON All modern double rooms on the waterfront In the heart A CLASSIC of famous seafood restaurants and the fishing fleet Phone 726-7376 for reservations Fishing Info and Ferry schedule Marshall Mona Coley 301 Arandell Street i EJU rag Your Innkeepers Morehead City NC 28557 cv 7 i 1:11 ii ittr A JOHN HUGHES FILM 4 i i 14 :41 1115 s-- 44t 4 -I OH CA NOY 7 i ol 2 fq! i 1 "2- c' i Nflr- 14 1C tr p4cte 60 Gic fi ff71 Nkti 41)rg: 7 7 and i11 14 10 tistui the 1-2 0 did I 1 11 4) 'Nett dick He's crude He's ass cr 1 CHECK INDIVIDUAL ADS FOR SHOWTIM The Well NW" CoenPNY ES a He's family iiit' 1 ij li ctr: 1 11 11(: A NVERS RLFA -Ef 444 4-' ibli I 41 4138 1 tacel ge 4 614 AS I fill tki 1 toc i ow Pt Fr 00E06 0 Off PI El 00F001 alWAVERLY PIACI MlitivoRitsintbi IMIllorowntal10111 I (14------ la eiRIVIIK i S51413 OW2120 34-11S02 101 eetE 11 srirap A CLASSIC MICKEY MOUSE CARTOON DUgClaV 05'du) I CThe Wak Cowry Comer ta02 tti-4tA ON THE WATERFRONT MOREHEAD CITY NC $45 night (weekends) s200week (Call us about lower weekday rates) All modern double rooms on the waterfront In the heart of famous seafood restaurants and the fishing fleet Phone 726-7376 for reservations Fishing Info and Ferry schedule Marshall Mona Coley 301 Arandell Street Your Innkeepers Morehead City NC 28557 A JOHN HUGHES FILM JOHN CANDY 614C01 He's crude He's crass He's family ti VI ilp A UNIVERSAL RELEASE i49 Ltiviaiv snuaac 0 NC Pi OBWAVERLY PIACI 06 IMSIXFORKSIMati Si413 6444120 Fr 00FOW 80 beautiful rooms located directly on the Atlantic Ocean open year 'round Restaurant lounge Senior Citizens Meeting rooms Discount convention facilities Direct dial phones Commercial rates cable TV with HBO Refrigerators in most Swimming pool rooms Children under 12 Complimentary Coffee FREE Golf course fishing pier and tennis nearby Moped renting water sliding miniature golf gift ship and playground nearby FOR ROOM RESERVATIONS CALL: 1000354-3464 or 1919-3543464 (In NC only) NI.
