My DEAR yOU'RE GETTING- UN ATTRAcnvE COSMETIC SKIN! AND THERE'S REALLY NO EXCUSE FOR 17 you KNOW :k Girls you can use all The powder and rouge you want to if you quand against ugly Cosmetic Skin as do—with LuirolletSoap 11: 4 10 A 3 Governor PIncbot Is Seeking to t'n11 horse David A Reed and the Old Guard Republican Group in Senate Race H1 A TEST IN PENNSYLVANIA ROOSEVELT POLICIES AT ISSUE IN STATE'S PRIMARY 4uttn:HOTON 111111EATI THE KANSAS CITY STAB 610 AIME BUILDING (By The Star's Correspondent) WASHINGTON May 12—The Pennsylvania primaries next Tuesday are attracting nation-wide interest because they will furnish the fir t test of strength of the Roosevelt "new deal" policies in both political parties In the Republican primaries Lena-tor David A Reed severe critic of the "new deal" Ain be opposed for renomination by Governor Gifford Pinchot progressive and pro-Roosevelt In the Democratic primaries the senatorial nomination will be fought out between Joe Guf fey Roosevelt leader in the state and supporter of the "new deal" and the more conservative Roland S Morris ambassador to Japan in the Wilson administration who has &ways opposed machine politics in the state Morris is not attacking the Roosevelt economic and social policies but is not attempting to ride into office with the President's support REED LEADERS ROOSEVELT FOES Attempts have been made in the Illinois and the Indiana primaries to show the continued strength of the "new deal" by adding up the votes tor Democratic candidates But there has been no state in which the new deal" policies thus far have bee) challenged as they have been by Senator Recd By adding the Reed vote in the Republican primaries and the Morris vote in the Democratic primaries some idea may be obtained next Tuesday of the Pennsylvania strength of the new dealers" The indomitable Republican machine in the Keystone state has greatly deteriorated in the thirteen years since the death of Senator Boles Penrose Governor Pinchot has hammered away at it with considerable EUCCeSS Eut it still has its Mellon organization centered around Pittsburgh its Vare organization in Phila delphia and "Old Joe" Grundy the head of the powerful Pennsylvania Manufacturers' Association NEVER A DEMOCRATIC srNAroa - Since the Civil War the state has had two Democratic governors but no senator In 1932 it was one of the six states casting its electoral vote for Hoover But in the local elections last November 'the Republican machine crumbled as never before In Philadelphia Vare lost to a Fusion-Democratic candidate for mayor: William McNair a Democrat was elected In Pittsburgh- and the rock-ribbed Republican stronghold of Lancaster County went Democratic This was Interpreted as a reflection of the great popularity of the Roosevelt policies Goveinor Pinchot and his vivacious - red-haired wife are supposed to have the blessing of the Roosevelt admin Istration but not the open support If he is defeated for the Republican nomination the administration Is counting on him to run independently or his supporters to bolt to the Demoeratic senatorial nominee which the administration expects to be Gulfey ' The administration Is jubilant over its chances of annexing this rock-ribbed Republican state In the election next November Pinchot has been elected governor i twice—in 1926 and 1930—but always In a 3-cornered fight This time the old guard Republican organization Is lined up solidly behind Senator Reed —with Mellon Vare and Grundy supporting his candidacy This is expected to be a hard combination to beat in a Republican primary FINCHOT HAS A RECORD On the other hand Pinchot has been conducting a successful fight on : utilities He has put in effect an old ' age pension plan paying $50 a month ' to indigent persons more than 70 years old Under his state dispensary plan legalized liquor is contributing annually about 12 million dollars for old age pensions and unemployment relief Pinchot because of his close association with the Roosevelt admini Istration has had much to do with ' the allocation of federal relief and PWA funds in his state The governor has played ball with union labor ' but the state federation has refused to indorse his candidacy for the senate Pennsylvania not only is a conservative Republican state normally but its vast Industries have been built up largely by the protective tariff system So Roosevelt's tariff reduction program is not popular with business of that state neither is much of the regimentation program of the NIZA Pennsylvania also has received little from the AAA farm re lief program MAY mum FROM FINCIIOT The Vare-Mellon-Grundy organization is supporting for the governorship William A Schnadcr who is Pinchot's attorney-general The old tuard slate is Reed and Schnader : Pennsylvania has 10000 state office holders who might be expected to be helpful to Pinchot But they know Pinchot soon will be through : as governor and they are looking to the next governor for their political future All of these things are helpful to Reed Pennsylvania has been curried over for votes as seldom before in a state primary There are ten Republican and two Democratic candidates for governor There are about 300 candidates for the thirty-four seats in the national house of representatives In the two Pittsburgh congressional districts 135 candidates are running In the party primaries Camp Clover Cliff Ranch Camp for Boys ( 7500-acre ranch In heart of Kan r-110 -
