in the first half throwing for 90 yards and one touchdown and rushing for 73 yards and another score The Mountaineers led 24-0 at the end of the first period and were up 38-0 before Bowling Green could push beyond the West Virginia 44 The Falcons' first score came after pass interference and personal foul penalties moved the ball to the Mountaineer 15 Their Second TD came with six seconds left in the game The victory kept Don Nehlen perfect in season openers and made the ninth-year head coach the most successful in WVIIs 96 years of football West Virginia scored its first touchdown when fourth-ranked Tigers used a 24-point second period to beat Virginia Tech 40-7 in the season-opener for both teams The Tigers first ran down the hill in 1942 simply because it was the fastest way into the stadium Now it also seems to be the quickest way to run opponents out of the game Clemson has won 73 percent of its games when it runs down the hill "What was most pleasing offensively was no fumbles and no turnovers and no penalties" Clemson coach Danny Ford said "We're tickled to death on that I would not have imagined that" Quarterback Rodney Williams agreed "We executed well" Williams said "We had no penalties and no turnovers And that's what you look for from an offensive unit" Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer said his club was just outmanned by a better team "First of all let me say that Clemson is a helluva football team" he said "But we are not a 40-point defensive team I guarantee we will play much better than that "We played like what we are an inexperienced football team We made so many little mistakes It was a frustrating day" With the victory Williams became the all-time winningest quarterback in Clemson history He has directed the Tigers to 23 victories one more than Homer Jordan did from 1979 to 1982 Williams a 6-foot-2 210-pound senior and Clemson started slowly managing 1 yard on their initial possession But the Tigers scored on their final five possessions of the first half to put the game away early before a crowd of 80500 In beating the Hokies for the 11th time in the last 12 games Clemson scored its most points against Virginia Tech in the 24- game series The Tigers' previous high score came in a 38-7 victory in 1978 Tailback Joe Henderson got the scoring surge started when he took a pitch from Williams and raced 41 yards for a touchdown with 3:22 left in the first quarter Tailback Terry Allen who splits time with Henderson made it 14-0 when he bulled over a would-be tackler at the 7-yard line and scored from 15 yards out seven seconds into the second period The Hokies cut the lead to 14-7 on Rich Fox's 5-yard run up the middle with 9:33 left to cap a 12-play 67-yard drive But the Tigers came right back when Williams scored on a 4-yard run with 6:07 left in the half After holding Virginia Tech to minus-6 yards on its next possession Clemson drove 62 yards in eight plays to stretch its lead to 28-7 when fullback Tracy Johnson scored on a 15-yard run with 2:05 remaining Freshman kicker Chris Gardocki finished Clemson's scoring in the first half with a 38-yard field goal with 16 seconds left after the Tigers recovered a Virginia Tech fumble Virginia Tech actually held the lead briefly The Hokies drove from their 40 to the Clemson 19 before Chris Kinzer kicked a 36-yard field goal with 9:13 left in the first half But Donnell Wool-ford was called for roughing the kicker and the Hokies opted to take the penalty and go for a touchdown Virginia Tech which has lost five of its last its six season-openers gained 1 yard in three plays before Kinzer came on to try a 25-yard field goal which he missed The Hokies did little else in the first half managing just 88 yards in total offense The Tigers had 252 yards in the first 30 minutes 213 on the ground Clemson was just as dominating in the second half The Tigers finished with 342 yards total offense 261 on the ground The Hokies had 214 in total offense behind redshirt freshman quarterback Will Furrer who was playing in his first college game The Wildcats who had trouble advancing to midfield for almost 25 minutes got on the board when Tom Withka kicked a 28-yard field goal with one second left in the first half Then in the third period Wake seemed to lapse into a lackluster state commiting penalties fumbling on short-yardage downs or punting Suddenly Villanova quarterback Kirk Schulz who completed 19 of 42 passes for 230 yards loosened up Given plenty of time to throw he started hitting Robert Brady (7 catches 111 yards) Cashman (5 for 43) and others And late in the third period he found Brady on a 32-yard TD toss which made the proud Deacon Dogs secondary howl and growl "We weren't going after them like we should have" said Dooley who used his bench extensively "Our secondary didn't play well in the second half And we weren't getting a pass rush on Schulz But again I have to give Villanova credit they came out determined in the second half and they did a good job" But Wake's defenders had their moments With the Deacs ahead 31-11 and about five minutes left in the third quarter Villanova recovered a fumble at the Deacon 20 But Wake's defensive tackle Kelly Vaughan intercepted to halt the Wildcats' momentum "Kelly made a big play" said Dooley Ivho was beginning to squirm on the sidelines The Deacs who sometimes act like a bunch of football bandits also got interceptions from AJ Greene linebacker Levern Be lin and defensive end James Dubose Vaughan and David Braxton pounced on Wildcat fumbles Some of those plays gave Wake's offense good field position early and it cashed in on the opportunities Wake marched 69 yards on its first possession which ended with a Hoyle field goal Then Greene picked off a pass setting up a 43-yard drive that culminated on Rogers' 16-yard TD run In the productive second quarter the Deacs went 17 yards 45 and 41 yards for scores Just for kicks Martin Bailey punted four times for a 405 average And on one play tailback Young rammed into a Villanova defender so hard the impact probably put another crack in the Liberty Bell "In the first half we ran our best offense" Tony Rogers said "In the second half we just thought we could coast get a touchdown here or there But you can't do that" Despite the second-half lapse however the Deacs still showed Saturday that they know how to skin a cat which was their mission this weekend Virginia 31 William and Mary 23 CHARLOTTESVILLE Va Virginia tailback Marcus Wilson scored touchdowns on the first two possessions of the second half and the Cavaliers kicked off their 100th year of football with a 31-23 comeback victory over William and Mary William and Mary a Division I-AA school that had won the last two meetings between the two teams built a 17-10 halftime advantage behind the passing of John Brosnahan and the running of Allan Williams Virginia put together a 75-yard seven-play drive on its first possession of the second half with Wilson running 20 yards up the middle to tie the score at 10:55 of the third quarter On William and Mary's first play from scrimmage after the ensuing kickoff Virginia linebacker Ray Savage stripped the ball from Ray Kingsfield and the Cavaliers' Phil Thomas recovered at the Indians' 18-yard line Quarterback Shawn Moore ran 18 yards for a score on the next play but the touchdown was called back because of a holding penalty Five plays later Moore hit Wilson on a 4-yard scoring pass for a 24-17 Virginia lead midway through the quarter William and Mary also playing in its season-opener responded with a 44-yard drive that ended when Steve Christie tied his school record with a 53-yard field goal Early in the fourth quarter the Indians' Aurelius Henderson intercepted a deflected Moore pass and returned the ball 23 yards to the Virginia 12 But the William and Mary drive stalled and Christie hit a 22-field goal at the 12:27 mark to cut the gap to 24-23 After each team swapped possessions Virginia moved 82 yards in six plays with Moore going in on a 1-yard keeper for the final score with 3 :58 to play The key play in the drive was a short pass from Moore to Kevin Morgan who turned it into a 51-yard gain to the William and Mary 10 Maryland 27 Louisville 16 COLLEGE PARK Md Junior Neil O'Donnell threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score in a 21-0 third-quarter burst that carried Maryland to a 27-16 victory over Louisville in a season-opener Saturday night Trailing 10-3 Maryland opened the second half with a 13-play 78-yard drive that culminated with a 3-yard touchdown pass from O'Donnell to Mike Beasley to even the score at 10-10 O'Donnell then connected with Vernon Joines for a 66-yard scoring pass with 1:47 left in the quarter giving Maryland a 17-10 advantage The touchdown came one play after a Louisville punt On the first play of Louisville's next possession Maryland cornerback JB Brown intercepted a Jay Gruden pass at the Louisville 38 Four plays later O'Donnell drove into the end zone on a 1-yard sneak giving Maryland a 24-10 lead on the final play of the period O'Donnell completed nine of 11 passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns in the decisive quarter In all he completed 22 of 33 passes for 239 yards with two touchdowns and one interception Louisville pulled to within 24-16 when Gruden threw his second touchdown pass to Chad Fortune a 3-yarder with 7:44 remaining The extra-point attempt went wide to the left Dan Plocki completed the scoring with a 47-yard field goal with 2 :09 remaining for the Terps Louisville controlled the game in the opening quarter The Cardinals opened a 10-0 lead when Gruden connected with Fortune on a 40-yard touchdown pass with with 1:07 remaining in the period That completion moved Gruden into second place in career passing yards at Louisville Gruden completed 28 of 45 passes for 319 yards for the game VILLANOVA Pa How do you skin a Villanova Wildcat? Wake Forest did it Saturday afternoon by striking early with a variety of offensive and defensive weapons and achieved a fairly predictable 31-11 season-opening victory It all seemed simple enough impressive enough and it was to a point But after feasting on a 31-0 lead in the first half the Deacons seemed to turn fat and happy and made Coach Bill Dooley very unhappy with what transpired over the last 30 minutes "I was proud of the way we performed in the first half" Dooley said "But I'm disappointed we came out in the second half and relaxed We didn't concentrate We had some penalties fumbled and really didn't rush the passer We acted like 'let's get this thing over with and go home' Villanova a Division I-AA program that resumed football four years ago did outscore Wake 11-0 in the last 30:01 of the game and threatened to tally on two other occasions Still Wake coming off a 7-4 season got the it came after by getting the job done early The Deacs scored on five of their first seven possessions with five players lighting up the scoreboard Wilson Hoyle got Wake off on the right foot with a 30-yard field goal then Tony Rogers who rushed for a game-high 101 yards bolted 16 yards to help create a 10-0 first-period lead The Deacs remained tough in the second quarter with quarterback Mike Elkins (3-yard run) No 3 tailback Anthony Williams (5-yard run) and backup quarterback Greg Long (10-yard run) each tallying and helping construct a 31-0 advantage Wake was running Rogers and Mark Young who netted 94 yards effectively And Elkins though just 7 of 18 throwing for the afternoon picked Nova's secondary apart by hitting Ricky Proehl five times for 76 yards The defense also was destructive in the first half and finished the afternoon with four interceptions and two fumble recoveries There was such Deacon domination in the initial 30 minutes that many of the 11624 left at intermission But then Wake seemed to let up and Villanova didn't give up "We came in at halftime and knew that we had to cut down on our mistakes" Wildcat receiver Jim Cashman said "We knew that we could move the ball on these guys and we did it in the second half" Vaughan grabs a
