The NC Board of Medical Examiners heard petitions Satur- 1 day from attorneys for four doctors defending their use of a controversial treatment for hardening of the arteries 1 The attorneys asked the board to make procedural changes they would use to determine what actions if any to take regarding the physicians The earliest the board would be expected to release Its decision on the petitions would be later this week Bryant Paris Jr executive secretary to the board said in a telephone interview The board which met Thursday through Sunday in Raleigh had planned to interview Dr Jeffrey Stillson of Asheville Dr John Laird of Leicester Dr Logan Robertson of Haywood County and Dr Theodore Rozema of Raleigh about their use of chelation therapy But because of requests for procedural changes in the hearing the physicians were not questioned Saturday Paris said The procedural questions Paris said involved whether the board would go forward with the matter and if it did how No evidence regarding chelation therapy was presented at the hearing Chelation therapy uses injections of ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid a chemical developed in the 1930s to extract calcium from fabric during the dying process The chemical also acts as a magnet for heavy metals like lead and has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for treating toxic metal poisoning It has not been approved for chelation therapy Proponents of the treatment say it cleans the body's arteries from within and improves disorders such as coronary artery disease and blockage of circulation to the brain Its critics say the treat- ment is useless for this purpose and can be dangerous After hearing evidence the board could take a variety of actions including sending the physicians letters of censure putting them on probation or revoking their medical licenses The board could also decide to take no action on the matter Paris said Protester at clinic faces trespass charge Ralph Reed director of Students for America a conservative student group that has been picketing a Raleigh clinic where abortions are performed was arrested and charged with trespassing Monday after sitting inside the clinic doors and reading Scrip- tures Reed 23 said he planned to stage a hunger strike in jail until Dr Paul A Fleming stops allowing abortions at the Fleming Center on Haworth Drive Other sit-ins are planned for this week an organization statement said Reed who is scheduled to appear today in Wake County Dis- trict Court for a pre-trial hearing was carried from the clinic about 10:40 am by two Raleigh police officers He was placed in jail under a $1000 secured bond after indicating to a magistrate that he would return to the clinic if released The group which has a goal of shutting down the clinic by Moth- er's Day previously asked Flem- ing to convert his clinic into a home for pregnant women or to donate to that cause an amount equal to the clinic's value In an interview Fleming called I Reed's tactics desperate and said he would not close his clinic "He's (Reed) not getting the coverage he wanted and he went for the next step" Fleming said Man in good condition after hit-run accident A Wake County man injured Saturday in a hit-and-run accident was listed in good condition Monday at Wake Medical Center as the State Highway Patrol searched for the driver of the car that hit him Eugene Rogers 63 of Route 2 Box 530 Wendell suffered a broken pelvis broken arm and ken leg when he was hit by a car in front of his house on Secondary Road 2320 (The
