sweeter" said Fox who had five catches for 74 yards "Some people probably felt it was a fluke last year but we didn't And no one can say this one was a fluke" He was right It wasn't Furman didn't rip down the fence on the grassy bank but the Paladins did rip for 451 total yards en route to their third victory in four tries this season Oh the Pack had its moments and chances Kelly Hollodick kicked a pair of first-half field goals from 28 and 37 yards Quarterback Erik Kramer ran 11 yards for a TD and passed 20 to Phil Brothers for second-half scores And Vince Evans battered for 133 yards on the State with an early blow and then breezed to a 42-20 victory before 36600 fans at Carter-Finley Stadium most of them stunned partisans Never mind that No 1 tailback Robbie Gardner was injured Quarterback Bobby Lamb tied a school record with four touchdown passes and receiver Chas Fox tallied three times as Furman defeated State for the second straight season The Paladins used some option-play trickery and a razzle-dazzle reverse but they didn't win purely on foxy football They led all the way and left the Wolfpack wondering what the fates er Furman had wrought as a full moon hung overhead "This is probably the worst we've played since I've been here" lamented Pack coach Tom Reed whose Pack fell to 1-3 "It was an amazing situation the ball bouncing off receivers penalties We were not good at all (five turnovers) "But give Furman credit" The Division I-AA team with 55 scholarships doesn't seem to back off from Division 1-A schools In the last four years the Paladins quarterback John Dewberry was throwing from the Clemson 33 to the end zone when Clemson safety Kenny Danforth apparently broke up the pass tipping it high in the air But Tech tight end Tim Manion came break on the long throw that John shouldn't have thrown" said Tech coach Bill Curry "Sometimes those things happen but we were very fortunate in that respect today We played good enough defense to win anyhow and I think that was the thing that made me most proud" In the Clemson locker room Ford was feeling anything but proud The Tigers lost three fumbles and had trouble with Georgia Tech's stunting
